One of the many things we have observed to this point is that there does not appear to be many trees here. The relative youth of the nation geologically precludes their growth. To this point, our guide guggabraga asked if we knew what to do if we got lost in an Icelandic forest. After a few seconds of thought on our part, she told us “you stand up!” Okay then…. Visitors to Iceland usuall... Read Full Entry

Tourism Board appointment?
You should be working for the Icelandic Tourism Board....Iceland is not somewhere that has ever been on my list of places to visit, but you are quickly changing my view! Looks fantastic.

HI Rachael,
I know what you mean.....it was never on the top of my list but Dave has dreamed of coming here for years. We almost came in 2000 but ended up in Acapulco. This country is simply amazing. ..... Beyond words... We have run out of descriptions. Each day, each turn seems more remarkable than the next. Hope you will add it to your short list.

Thanks for putting me on this blog list Merry Jo. I truly enjoy reading this and love the pictures. I would imagine you're living a dream come true!

Hello Lee,
I'm glad your are enjoying our blog. I wasn't sure you would want to receive it but knew you could unsubscribe. We are having the time of our life. We've saved for this and are enjoying it a great deal. It is hard to find words to describe what we have sen. We are running out of adjectives. Thanks for the note. It is certainly good to know someone is reading.

simply superlative
What a superlicious journey, and how great to have excellent guides/friends to tell you stories, drive on those tricky roads and get you to the juiciest waterfalls, thermal pools and favorite, secret places of the locals! Keep those waterfalls coming!
28th August 2012

Indeed we've never seen so many waterfalls.
We loved the thermal pool out in nature. It was grand.

We will be in the Shetaland's early next week
Hope to have coffee with your son. We think we should meet more of the family. I'd love to see the puppies.

Thanks for the effort to visit the radar station...
and glad that you enjoyed the view. And that you realized what a small world we live in! What was your reaction from By the way, the road to the top of Pikes Peak may not be comparable to the steep dirt roads in Iceland. This years Hill Climb race to the top was on paved (sealed) road the entire way for the first time. What was the reaction of Kristjian’s nephew when you told him of your connection to the project?
29th August 2012

6 degrees of seperation
We didn't get to meet Kristjian's nephew but they thought it was an amazingly small world. We met the nephew's wife and child. They certainly found a tall mountain to put it on. All is well in Iceland. The connections around the world make it a small place.

Lovely :)
Well it looks like you are still loving every moment in Iceland. The Scandinavians do love to throw words together to make one long word. If you think Eyjafjallajökull is difficult, try pronouncing the Swedish word eckliastikexpeditionsprotokollhandläggare ;) Have fun :)
29th August 2012

Still having a great time
Not sure I will ever be able to pronounce that word....even with practice. Indeed the language is a challenge. Heading to new lands at the end of the week.

Wickedly Wonderful Western Fjords of Iceland
Another great blog from a land still on our list. Your vast detail will be useful when we eventually get to make the journey. We nearly made it in 2005 en route from Bergen to Shetland on board the Narrona, but storms forced them to drop us off with our motorhome in the rain on Faroe! I agree - it is WET, but the storm pushed all the sea birds inshore. Fabulous! (Motorhome News from Europe 33/34) Welcome to the world of birders by the way, it's often our prime focus as we travel and it gets us into the wild places you also seem to love so much. PS. Todd says 'hello' to Brutus. You'll fall in love with Shetland. David - the rear end on the grey haired nomads

So good hearing from you.
June is the best time to see the birds. But, we have seen many and enjoyed it. We splurged on this piece of the trip and hired a guide. She is very knowledgable and has lead birding trips. We can send you a list of places she says to go for birding. We may have to take this up as a serious hobby. Truly enjoying ourselves.
