We have reached the half way point of our trip around Iceland. The odometer is about to tick over to half of our allocated distance and we are 10 days in to a 20 day trip. So far, so good. In this post we will cover some of waterfalls and lakes in this central part of the North, talk a little about camping Iceland style and outline our planning for the next leg of the trip into the Highlands. We have previously camped in Europe for extended periods and have noted that they do it differently here. Well serviced camp sites that can handle, say 100 people, have 4 toilets and 2 showers but we have been in a few that have had closer to 900 people that don't have too many more. People seem to ... read more

This entry will take us into the North across the top part of the country to places including Siglufjordur, Akureyri and Husavik. We will talk about farms, the Herring Industry Museum and a Turf House Museum, among other things. We set off anti-clockwise around the Ring Road for no better reason than that the weather looked like rubbish in the south and pretty good to the west and north. In fact, in Iceland, there seems to be no better reason to go in a particular direction than the weather. Wind, when it comes up, can be a nuisance or even dangerous. We have followed the weather and enjoyed good weather most of the way, so far. After travelling through the west and north west, the north of Iceland is a bit like a return to something ... read more

I’m up early again, working on the blog ahead of the alarm that we’ve set. Things aren’t looking all that good outside, and I think that we are both concerned about being able to get into the harbor for tendering today. We head up to the Lido and grab our typical “Tour Day” breakfast. After four weeks on board the Rotterdam we seem to be hitting our stride. Maybe a 2020 World Tour isn’t such a far-fetched idea after all. The fog horn blared. As we eat pool side we begin to notice some small breaks in the fog, and then some daylight above, and before we were done eating we could see Akureyri, and we had arrived. There were a ton of people waiting to go on the “Jewels of Iceland” tour. Probably many tons ... read more

This morning the ship docked in Akureyri at 7am and I needed to be ready to head off on my tour, Taste of Akureyri, at 8am so I ordered breakfast to be delivered to my room whilst I got ready. Today we disembarked onto a dock, which was something new! It was cold and raining in Akureyri but we were quickly moved onto our bus for the tour. Our guide was a local person and was very knowledgeable but also hilarious! As we drove along the Fjord he explained to us what life was like living in Iceland and in particular, this very northwestern part of the island. We stopped off at a village that was at the end of the fjord so that we could take photos looking back towards Akureyri. Stunning! We then drive ... read more

This morning we were still at sea in our way to Grímsey Island so I went to La Terrazza for the buffet breakfast. After breakfast I headed to the mud room to collect my boots as they needed to be returned this morning. This means we will no longer have any wet landings. We arrived at Grímsey Island at 11:30am. Grímsey is the northernmost inhabited Icelandic territory. It is a tiny, charming island which is approximately 5km in size. Grímsey is a popular destination as the Arctic Circle crosses through it, so today we have sailed from the Arctic Circle and crossed the line but will have the opportunity to then walk back over the Arctic Circle on this island! After a light lunch on board (trying to cut down!) we were scheduled to head ashore ... read more

Rano se nam podarilo vykyblovat se nezvykle brzo. Sbalili jsme svych pet instantnich polivek (svestky jsme tu totiz fakt nevideli) a sjeli k pobrezi do Husaviku. Mela dva stezne, plachty, kapitana a motor. Hlavne ten motor ten dojem z plachteni trochu kazil. A pak uz nekdo zakricel: "whale" a zacala ta spravna sranda. A urcite vic nez doma v Cechach. Jen me trochu stvalo, ze vetsinou znelo hlaseni pruvodce zhruba takto: "Velryba na ... read more

Nekde u Trebone najdete hezci.
