I took morning trains to Szombathely. Another country, another language that I can’t understand or speak. Far fewer numbers of people who might speak English. Luckily I was going to a Servas host. I am a member of International Servas, an organization that promotes world peace through travel. Today I came to Erika’s house and she gave me a tour of the beautiful communities. It is late so I will write more later. Meanwhile enjoy the photos from today. Morning update, coming here was an adventure. Using the print out given to me by nice train station person, I found the right platform. When the train pulled up it had two different sections. It took some effort to find a worker who could show me which compartment I should sit in. I had to change trains ... read more

Day 3 and we’ve loaded our panniers, on the road and heading to Budapest on a sunny morning. We found a quiet route to the Most SVP bridge that took us over the Danube. The bridge has exclusive pedestrian and cycling lane which makes a safe, pleasant crossing. A quiet cycle lane follows the Danube, the only other cyclists we met were guys commuting in the opposite direction, to work in Bratislava. A very pleasant route, and we deviated away from the normal route to the dam and reservoir at Čunovo, instead opting for the inland route through Rajká. The pretty towns along the way including Mosonmagyraróvar, were well worth the detour. Good cycle lanes carried us all the way into the centre of Györ. Györ has been the surprise of the trip so far. A ... read more

We returned to the garage that fixed our water pump in the morning and they printed us off a diagram of the additional work that needed doing on the car. We thanked them for helping us out and decided to call in at IKEA before beginning our journey to Hungary. Just as we were pulling into the car park we heard a new strange noise that the car was making. Jack looked out his wing mirror and “oh fuck, the wheel!”. Char jumped out to find the back left wheel on a very scary angle with only one bolt in! We carefully and slowly moved the car inches further into a space and thanked our lucky stars it hadn’t fallen off going down the motorway. Chars dad thought the garage must not have tightened the nuts ... read more

So today it was goodbye to our beloved Italy. She had not been kind to us this trip. The weather has been poor for the time of year and so many things have gone wrong. I have got through so many books. Babylon Idol the cross between Indiana Jones meets the Da Vinci Code. The Handmaids Tale – a story about the future. An Orwellian world were women have only one function and that to have babies. If they fail they are sent to the wall to be hung or left to wander a radiactive world outside the wall. Canterbury Tales with a mixture of Blade Runner and 1984 thrown in for good measure. The Essex Serpent set in 1893 in a world where religion battles with the work of Charles Darwin. Glenn has lost a ... read more

We left Bratislava at 9.15 and immediately got ourselves off track because they were building a new bridge over the Danube which changed the route. It would have been nice if we had been sent the information about this so we knew where to go. Once beyond the city we were soon zooming through the countryside on a stop bank with a tail wind. It sure makes for fast cycling. Whilst we were following the Danube we hardly ever saw it because of the belt of trees alongside. The land is flat and is nearly all in crops of maize. We crossed the border into Hungary just before Rajka where we were supposed to turn off. We didn’t see the turn off because we were following E6 path and kept to it instead of going another ... read more

Picked quite the time of year to go on a road trip, I think it was one of the hottest summers on record. Thank God we took the time to have our air conditioning fixed before we left Germany. Quick trip across Germany and the top of Austria, won't bore you with the details of the drive as we had done it many times before. Off to our first planned stop in Gyor Hungary, I found a cute little camp kind of place to stay near a man made lake called Achilles Park. When we arrived it was hot there too. It was a restful night and ready to head off in the morning after breakfast, that was served on the patio outside. Strange little breakfast, still not sure what we had there. Posted pictures on ... read more

After an excellent train ride from Bratislava enjoying the scenery and finally winning two Quiddler card games off Jeanette, we arrived in the famed city of Budapest which we would only use as a transit point to pick up our rental car and head south to Heviz. We would return in about a week to stay for a while. So, more on Budapest later. Before I say anything about Heviz I need to single out someone whom we met and who deserves a whole paragraph of this blog entry. This person I speak about is the tram driver that drove us from the main train station to downtown. All the Hungarian people that I have met in Calgary, although on a casual basis only, have been warm. This driver was simply doing his job yet he ... read more

I wanted to follow the time-line of our experiences in my blog but I just got back from the Ultrabalaton relay race and I'm still really high on the experience... so I decided to write about it while it is still fresh in my mind. My friend Luca has told me about participating in the race last year. It's a 220 km (approximately 130 mi) run around Lake Balaton, the largest continental lake in Europe. This year was the ninth annual event. Here is the race's website for some images and additional info for those of you who are intrigued: http://ultrabalaton.hu. The race was this past weekend (Sat. May 30 – Sun, May 31). The Balaton is a major recreational area in the western part of Hungary with towns all around the lake. The lake itself ... read more
