Day 9 Budapest - Miskolc I am fucking knackered this whole carrying my life on my back is starting to take its toll and i reckon im gna need knee replacements and while there at it hips as well there getting a bit creeky.. Also i think i,ve developed a slight hunch.. I have to like psych myself up to mount the monstrocity on my back, and then attempting the steep steps and narrow corridors on the train is a joke.. You cant turn either and swing the bag off i end up just standing leaning back and dropping it.. Also my sleeping bag, wellies and tent attached to the outside of it so its actually wider than me.. Anyway i had a nice breakfast this morning and washed it down with a cold Becks.. Got ... read more

24-08-08 Valley of the Beatiful Women and terential rain We spent another day in Zakopane doing very little, just enjoying a bit of a holiday, and left for Hungary early Saturday morning. We decided to drive through Slovakia and continue on to Hungary. The trip through Slovakia was some of the best scenery on the trip, mountainous, and river valleys, and huge forests. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Slovakians are some of the worst drivers in Europe, this however has a lot to do with their road laws. The urban speed limit is 60 kph, and they allow overtaking in urban areas, what usually happens is people overtake you at 90kph in the towns with pedestrian, cyclists, horses sharing the road and then only sit on 100kph when they are on the open road, ... read more

Valinta osoittautui erinomaiseksi. Aidattu alue, jonka portit suljettiin yöksi, takasi turvan täyteen pakatulle autollemme ja meille yön rauhallisessa kivassa huoneessa maukkaa... read more

Now staying at a vast 1920s spa hotel at Lillafured, complete with turrets and landscaped grounds. In the dining room yesterday evening we were treated to a selection of light classical 'favourites' by an organist. And at breakfast this morning there is a very competent guitarist whose set includes two taken from the Jazz Traitors repertoire (Black Orpheus and Mercy Mercy Mercy). I squint carefully to see whether it is Zoltan, but it doesn't look like him (no grey fleece). After our walk, during which we get hopelessly lost - again - we arrive back at the hotel in time to see a big wedding party motorcade turn up, complete with three police motorcyle outriders and a police car, all with sirens whooping and the other cars all honking their horns. This is unusual behaviour hereabouts: ... read more

The food hasn't really improved. What they like best over here is lukewarm pork or turkey done in various styles, with pickled cabbage and dumplings. I make a mental note to tell Zoltan to get himself out here: he's looking for a girlfriend, and the girls of Eger are stunning. (Bridget adds that he could smarten himself up a bit, starting with that grey fleece he wears all the time.) Yesterday, as we started our walk at the little station of Egeresvolgy-Varrohaz, one member of our party spotted a sign saying Beware Of Wolves. Later, in the woods, we came across some still-tended war graves, one of them that of Horst Orstenburg who was pursued and killed by the Russians in 1944. Apparently the nearby town of Miskolc was an important centre for Nazi armaments production. ... read more

The only Hungarian I know is Zoltan 'Paul' Viski, guitarist with The Jazz Traitors. He's not really Hungarian - he lives in Ealing. Before setting off I asked him what I should take with me as a gift when I visit some of his relatives. 'Curtains' came the reply. That's Hungarian humour. 7.00am. Terminal 5 at Heathrow. Now there's a concept. But actually the chaos seems to have subsided at last, although the staff are understandably jumpy, having been blamed by the management for all the cock-ups. We arrive at Budapest 2 1/2 hours later and are whisked to the Keleti Station for the journey to Eger on the fringes of Bukk National Park. The train is a standard Soviet-era job with brown vinyl seats and luggage racks bolted at a slight angle to the horizontal. ... read more

Hi everyone, Just a quick note today because we haven't been up to a whole lot lately. Yesterday we climbed aboard an overnight train to Hungary. Compared to our last overnight train it was a comparitively short 8hrs, but once again we had to get up early to present our passports (the major drawback to overnight trains). We arrived in Eger nice and early, and set out to explore the city. We started with a great fort that sits just above the city, which was very cool. Unfortunately the long train ride and lack of sleep started to catch up with me and I had to go home for a sleep... my sleep did nothing to make me feel better, and later I developed an upset stomach. At the same time Matthew has come down with ... read more

July 18, 2007 Krakow…WOW!!!! We have just wrapped up 4 days in Krakow Poland. The first word that comes to mind is WOW!!!! It is an amazing, vibrant, gorgeous city. The Polish people are intelligent, beautiful, nice, kind, and loving their new freedom. The energy in Krakow was magnetic….we just loved it! Admittedly, I didn’t want to come to Krakow. I had visions of cold, gray, gloomy non-descript concrete buildings with old grumpy people roaming around. Scott and I even had an argument 2 days before as I once again stressed how much I didn’t want to go there. He had been planning all along for us to come to Krakow…I secretly hoped I would detour him to Vienna for some coffee and pastry eating on the Kartner Strasse. Scott being as stubborn as he ... read more

Hello everyone, Well since I last left a blog we have been to Eger (HUngary), Kosice (Slovakia), staying a night in Miskolc (HUngary) between the two, and Vysoke Tatrz (Slovakia(. To let you know this keyboard is a nightmare, what a suprise, and for some unknown reason will only let me do brackets facing in one direction. Great stuff. So anyway, since I last wrote we have left our original path for one less well known, and with this has come increasing difficulties with language, some interesting situations at restaurants (when the dishes are named in Slovakian/Hungarian and none of the waiters speak english( and a lot of excitement. After Budapest we headed off to Eger, a town famed for its wine. Fantastic we thought, wine and rural Hungary. Unfortunately on arrival we discovered that ... read more
