Days 37 26th June Bekoice, Hungarian/Slovakian Border Goodness, the nights are pretty cold here! We might even have to fire up the lorry central heating system at this rate. But it was a perfect day for riding, not too hot, slight wind (to keep the horse flies away) with wispy bits of cloud rushing across the blue sky. We were introduced to our horses – Leo (Il P’s mount) & Pepe (my mount) and if the barred teeth and ears back were anything to go by, they didn’t like each other! Quarter Horses are small, standing no more than 15.3 , with an easy nature. Apart from being used to work with cattle, many ‘Quarters’ take part in shows where the prize money is about as big as the saddles. They perform certain manoeuvres that they ... read more

Days 36 Bekoice, Hungarian/Slovakian Border Day 36 25th June The photos will do the talking – what a wonderful place! When doing our research for this part of the world we were looking to ride and extraordinarily came across a website for Western Riding. Hungarian countryside on the back of a Quarter Horse riding ‘western’. Why not? The farm is owned by a Dutch couple who, three years ago, realised their dream of coming to live in this part of the world with their 13 horses, 4 dogs, too-numerous-to-mention cats, a donkey called Tina (after Tina Turner) and 3 goats. Anita and Nico could not have been more welcoming – Big Bess is neatly parked in a field (with the comforting knowledge that there is a tractor to pull her out if needs must) and we ... read more

Days 35 24th June Budapest – Eger There is a motorway that runs from Budapest to a few miles short of Eger. It runs along the edge of the great Hungarian Plain, the Plain that covers nearly half of Hungary and is remarkable only in its flatness. The sun literally shimmers over it and it is here that they grow the cereals and where foreign investment (didn’t Brian Aldridge from The Archers buy a farm here?!) is causing concern amongst the Hungarian farmers. We reach Eger easily and in good time. We had read up about Eger which had been described as a ‘gorgeous Baroque town’; as we reached the sprawling grey, graffitied (there is A LOT of it in Hungary) suburbs we wondered how anyone could be so generous with their description. However, we have ... read more

Well we caught the little train up into the Nemzeti Park in Hungary from the outskirts of Eger. It was a little odd as I managed to get off the train before the final stop and had to pedal after it to catch up with Mrs Bilbo who had wisely stayed on the train. After catching up and a quick beer to calm down soon we set off into the Beech tree forest towards an area called the Hungarian Gate before heading down to Miskolc. Our Hybrids were a bit over loaded with two panniers each and we had bought a local map from a guide who spoke excellent English back in Felsőtárkány. We had a small bar of fig cake and a bottle of water. It was a very pretty push up or ride ... read more

We are back with Leslie on the road....and this is the big news. Flight from Rio to Madrid, than from Madrid to Frankfurt where I met my parents who brought us Leslie. We rent a car, and directly on for 11 hours drive to the North of Hungary. Ma'ri has a big family...to simply make it short, her parents have more than 40 grandchildren. So every year, they have a big family reunion. My first one was last year. it can looks quite impressive at first look, but what is really impressive is the love of this big family, one that you do not meet often. Sadly for us, this year the family reunion will also be without Tiffany, not our choice, just a reality. We spent three days in the countryside, few kilometers away from ... read more

I was passed out as soon as I had lain in bed, and was confident that I would finally get a full night’s rest. Hell no. It is hours before sunrise and Kristen has awoken me, panicked out of sleep by the large bug she sees crawling on the ceiling. I stumble to the light switch across the room wait for my eyes to adjust to the incandescent barrage. I soon can see that it is just a very large grasshopper and I stand on the bed, trying to grab it. Being what it is, it leaps across the room each time I get near, and it is about five minutes before we finally catch it and open the door, letting it free into the night. Energized and awake, it is even longer before I can ... read more

It is 3:30 a.m. and I am lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. Kristen has somehow managed to remain asleep beside me, but as the roosters and dogs begin anew their incessant calls, I admit defeat and head out to the kitchen. Jetlag has won again. I find that Klara left the small radio atop the freezer playing before heading to bed, so to a curious Hungarian cover of “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” I set up my netbook at the small dining table and type until the sun begins warming my back. By the time Gabe awakes and blurry-eyed begins brewing a pot of coffee, I already loath Hungarian radio. Europop, most of it in English, reigns on the airwaves, and my skin crawls with every joyfully soulless, generically programmed beat. It is made by Europeans for ... read more
