We made it to our boat on the Danube, but of course as per all Wrigglesworth holidays it was not all smooth sailing!!! Our transfer to the boat didn't turn up and we didn't know where the boat was moored. We werent the only ones - 12 of us were stranded. Luckily Leonie had roaming on her phone and after a couple of phone calls (including 1 to the Captain of the boat we thought we were on) we found out that we are on a different boat, where is was docked and there wasn't any transfer available. We managed to get a shuttle transfer to the boat and got settled in - it is very nice, staff are lovely and food is definitely 5 star. But no adventuring for us today, after listening to the ... read more

There has been perfect weather for this entire trip and we feel blessed. Today the forecast is for light rain until 11 a.m. which is the time we are meeting to do our daily explorations. It will be much cooler today but that is okay because I packed for much cooler temperatures than we have had so far. It has been downright hot most days but we’re not complaining at all about that. Right now I am sitting in the hotel restaurant having delicious coffee and looking out the window at the Fisherman’s Bastion - an incredible view early in the morning when the hordes have not yet arrived. So I sit back and enjoy and give Anne some time to sleep. I’ve been hard on her this week because I don’t sleep past 6 a.m. ... read more

Unfortunately this was our departure from the good ship “Egil” as we leave the docks at 8:30 a.m. and head into Budapest to the Hilton Castle in Buda. We say goodbye to all the lovely staff on our ship. Budapest is separated by the Danube with Buda on one side and Pest on the other. Old Town, perched 550 feet above the right bank of the Danube is a fascinating medieval area. It is pure pleasure to stroll the narrow streets lined with colourful houses imagining life here in the Middle Ages. Our hotel, Hilton, is in the Castle District alongside Matthias Church and down the way from the “ Buda Castle” which isn’t a castle but a palace now used for museums, etc. Matthias Church is a soaring, gleaming Gothic glory named for Hungary’s most ... read more

Our ship Egil sailed through the night and arrived in Komarom, Hungary. This is as far as we can sail on the Danube because the water level is so very low. We were bussed into Budapest leaving at 8:30 this morning (about one hour drive). Arriving in Buda, we crossed the one of the many bridges spanning the Danube into Pest. The bus toured us around all the important area of Pest: Heroes Square, Parliament Buiildings, Iron Shoes monument, largest Jewish synagogue, Opera House, etc. First disembarkation was to walk over to Heroes Square. There are 14 statues - seven chieftains of the Magyar plus seven other important leaders. The tall column in the centre is Archangel Gabriel and is the Millennium Monument to commemorate the 1,000 years since conquest of the Carpathian area. We see ... read more

Today was a bit more low key, as poor Elly has blisters from all our walking yesterday. We did some laundry in the morning, then headed out later morning for our caffeine fix (diet coke for me, coffee for Elly). After that, we walked down by the river to see the Shoes by the Danube monument. It's a bunch of metal shoes along the rivers edge, as a reminder of an atrocity during WWII, when thousands of Hungarian Jews were forced to take off their shoes there (so that they could be collected and sold) before they were all shot to death, with their bodies falling in the Danube. Such an awful part of history. We went on a river cruise early afternoon. It was lovely. They had audiophones with a commentary explaining the various sites ... read more

What a beautiful city! I flew into Budapest last night, following the directions given by the host of the home exchange apartment that we're staying in. Elly flew in from Athens earlier in the day, so we planned to meet at the apartment. The directions were very clear, and public transportation is well laid out. I took a bus, then the metro, then a streetcar. Got to the apartment and caught up with Elly, and then we caught a bus into the centre of town to walk around a little, and have dinner together. Mexican, which seemed kind of wrong, but in the long stretch of restaurants, there didn't to be any real Hungarian cuisine (though the typical dishes that I read about were all meat based anyway). There was Italian, Japanese, Spanish, American, Mexican options. ... read more

The last three days at the track provided some of the best moments of the trip so far. On Friday morning the only event we wa ted to watch was the women's high jump qualifying. We did that from our room and were pleased that both Eleanor Patterson and Nicole Olysagers both got through to the final. The men's decathlon started but both Ash Moloney and Cedric Dubler had to pull out during the competition due to injury. At 12-15 we met Denis Wilson in the foyer and walked with him to Voromasy Square and to the S/O restaurant. This stands for Soy/Olive. The place has an Italian restaurant on one side and an Asian on the other. The Oceania Area Lunch was being held in the Italian side. This is always a highlight of any ... read more

The last 4 days have been mainly spent at the stadium. On both Monday and Tuesday there was no morning session so we rested in our room. Monday we walked up to Erzsébet Square where we had a great lunch at Il Pasteo, an Italian restaurant on the edge of the square. Great food and service. It was very hot so we were glad to retreat back to the hotel after a short stroll. The evening session highlight was the Men's Discus where Matt Denny was competing. What a comp!! Matt threw a new Australian record but that was only good enough for 4th!! On Tuesday, we again rested before going back to the shopping area, venturing further along the Visci utca but the heat got the better of us. We stopped at the Cyrano restaurant ... read more

The afternoon heat is stifling. Our washing was dry within 30 minutes and not long after we ventured out we were hot and sticky all over again. There was only one real destination this afternoon and that was the basilica. And it was a sweaty walk uphill to get there, but Oh so worth it when we did. As you can imaging the inside was huge but not over stated. There is a lot of maintenance going on do we couldn't see the inside of the dome which is a real shame. We explored the crypt under the church in cool air, we lingered a while down there. The highlight was, gowever, the walk up to the dome that Tom and I did (Jeff has a slight aversion to hights). There were 411 steps to the ... read more

On Thursday and Friday Fletcher spent most of the days at the Congress where a new council was elected and various committees reported on their activities. I vegged out completely on the Thursday but on Friday morning I walked up to the very vibrant shopping area and square behind the hotel. Here I explored the various shops and buildings. Market stalls had been set up in preparation for St Stephen's day which is Sunday.I bought myself a hat and some make-up, but after an hour and a half I was tired so wandered back to the hotel for a cold drink. Fletcher returned and shared my club sandwich and then in the evening we went to the Local Organisibg Comittee dinner. This was even grander than the opening dinner. It was held in the Museum of ... read more
