Phase 5 – Cruise begins Tuesday, May 13 Up nice and early everyone on time and we had 50 seats for the 16 of us to get comfortably to Prague. We were on the ship and in our cabins at 3 pm. The rest of our North Van group had already checked in earlier in the day and were on a walkabout. We just unpacked then explored the ship, and met the rest our group as they came back to the ship. Dinner was a great start to the cuisine on board. After dinner Ross and I went out and walked over the bridge to the tunnel and I got some good night shots since Budapest likes to light up all the buildings. 5935 steps
Wednesday, May 14 Wonderful breakfast buffet – everything you could possibly want for a breakfast or a lunch. Bus tour of Budapest took us up to Matthias church that had an amazing ceramic tile roof and the interior – wow! I would go to church just to gaze at the walls – art nouveau style with every surface covered in
muted earth tones and patterns so varied that I had to take so many pics just to remind myself of all the ideas for quilting and painting - my sister, Marilyn who does murals would have just set up camp there. We got time to stop at the coffee houses and a good thing too as it was actually cheaper for me to have a cappuccino and use the restrooms than to pay for each of us to use the public WC’s. As it was a rainy day and quite cool (downright chilly) when we got back t the ship the staff were handing out hot wine grog. Mmm! Then it was time to dry out and go up to the Captain’s Welcome Cocktail party. At our sailaway from Budapest the rain was almost sleet and on the upper deck we were passed warmed blankets and then Schnapps. Good send off and good photos too. 13,472 steps (good thing with all that alcohol)
Thursday, May 15 Brandy breakfast. We were sitting finishing breakfast when Daniel, the maître d’ came around and asked how it was going and I said I’d know as soon as
I’d had enough coffee and he said a little brandy would help with that. I said oh yes and he came back with a bottle and topped off our coffee cups – nice extremely generous pour from the bottle. Good start since our walking tour was the cold, windy and rainy. Don’t remember too much of Bratislava except try to get my sweater to cover my hands and still grip the umbrella and keep it from blowing inside out. I did a major slip on a mossy road tile and ended up on my bad knee. It wasn’t the Brandy! Although the old town was temping to wander about, a group of us headed straight for an indoor mall and sat for a coffee and the thickest hot chocolate Lorna has ever seen. Ross downed his in no time. Everyone split off to do their own shopping. Not much new that I hadn’t seen in Prague and Salzburg so back to the ship. After dinner there was a quartet with a fiddler who had very quick fingers – he could certainly make that violin sing the high notes. More amazing were his gold and black mottled patent leather shoes. No
camera. Darn. 8688 steps
