Overlooking the River Danube? What else can workers ask for? I wouldn't want for nothing, not even holidays :)I had read that the best time for visiting Budapest was November and there I was, landing on the city in the wettest time of the year
Although prior to visiting, I didn't know much about the capital, Budapest captured my heart from the very first moment I landed on its soils and it is easy to see why the city wins you over quite quickly. For once, it's got plenty of history to offer, delicious food and very friendly locals. Indeed, Budapest comes across as a very youthful city and for me, there is a whole host of reasons why it should be included in those destinations needed to be visited before you die -as they say- or at least, one should make sure to include this must-visit city in one's traveling plans. Therefore, if you plan to go, get cracking...hehehehe....and make sure you visit the termal baths or nightclubs for I heard a great deal about them. Me, on the other hand, I just wanted the city to take me back to a different history period and it beautifully did it.

para visitar Budapest era noviembre y coincidencialmente, allí estuve en el tiempo más frío del año.
Sin conocer mucho sobre la ciudad, antes de visitarla, Budapest me conquistó desde el momento en que puse mi pie allí y no es difícil saber por qué la ciudad te enamora; primero que todo, su historia es abundante, la comida es deliciosa y los Budapences (será que se dice así? Me corrigen porfa si me equivoco) son hipergeniales. En efecto, la capital Húngara resulta ser una ciudad muy joven y para mí, hay cantidades de razones del por qué Budapest debería ser incluida en esos destinos que necesitamos visitar antes de morir -como se dice popularmente- o al menos, tenemos que asegurarnos de incluirla en nuestros futuros planes de viaje. Y mi querido lector, si estás planeando irte de viaje, primero muévelo, muévelo...y asegúrate que te bañas en las aguas termales o danzas en los clubes nocturnos, porque he escuchado cosas espectaculares! Este pecho, en cambio, estaba más interesado en que Budapest me transportara a un periodo diferente de la historia y lo logré, Budapest llenó mis expectativas!!
Buda or Pest or...BUDAPEST Budapest consisted of two separate
cities; Buda and Pest... separate both by the Danube River. I was fascinated reading about it while taking pictures from the bridges at all angles and I must say, the House of Parliament is such a great place to admire that I gather it must be the most photographed place in Budapest.

Estuve fascinado leyendo sobre los inicios de la city mientras tomaba fotos en los puentes desde todos los ángulos, y déjame decirte que la casa del Parlamento es un lugar tan monumental que no me cabe duda de que debe ser el lugar más fotografeado en Budapest.
Rich Jewish Heritage Budapest houses the largest Jewish population in Central Europe, which attracts lots of tourists to admire the cultural manifestations and events that show a flourishing culture. The Jews were a community that was formed in the 12th century. ."..Privileges and wealth were commonplace for them, so much that after some confiscations and the Ottoman Empire invasion, they regained their position..." That's resilience, I thought. It was quite insightful to hear it again from our tourist guide as
it helped me to commit those facts to memory. However, hearing about what you would find in the Terror Museum didn't strike a chord with me, I'm afraid. As a matter of fact, the thought of looking into the young Budapest during the Nazi and Soviet occupation would be highly depressing. That´s right, listening to the description of all the atrocities committed during that period reminded me of my depressing visit to the Killing Fields in Cambodia 10 years ago. But from her description, I wouldn't mind doing the Ghost tour, that could be kind of fun; unfortunately, time in Budapest was a bit too tight for me.
Rico Patrimonio Judío En Budapest, encuentras la población judía más grande de Europa Central, lo cual atrae cantidades de turistas que vienen a admirar las manifestaciones culturales y los eventos que muestran una cultura floreciente. Los Judíos eran una comunidad que se formó en el siglo XII. "..Los privilegios y la riqueza eran como que sinónimos de los judíos, tanto que luego de varias confiscadas y la invasión del Imperio Otomán, volvieron a recuperar su posición..." Más resiliencia para donde, pensé yo. Eso fue super interesante oírlo de
labios de la guía pues me gusta estimular la memoria con estos hechos que seguro, no se me olvidarán. Sin embargo, no me convenció de ir a visitar el Museo de Terror, que es sin duda, uno de los lugares más populares. De hecho, escuchar sobre lo que se encontraría allí no fue muy motivante; su descripción de los tiempos de la joven Budapest, siendo ocupada por los Nazis y los Soviéticos me hizo recordar la visita deprimente a Los Campos de Muerte en Cambodia y nooooo quería cambiar mi modo feliz, asi que no me aparecería por allá. Sin embargo, me gustó la descripción que hizo sobre un tour Fantasma, que calvez sí me hubiera gustado verlo, pero desgraciadamente, el tiempo corto no me ayudaba.
Communicating with the Budapestians and...how much is the change??? The locals are utterly friendly, ready to help you out even though I didn't meet many who spoke English. Their willingness to assist you as well as their smile were enough for me to get by during my disoriented attempts. Anyways, the currency and the Hungarian language were and will be both unknown to me. On the one hand, I
couldn't make out what was the equivalent in pesos for most amounts of Hungarian forints I got back as change every time I paid in Euros; just so that you have an idea, for a Euro you get about 350 forints but as you gather, I suck at Maths to say the least and I prefer to trust the locals when it comes to change. As for the Hungarian language is quite complex and flexible but I am sure learning it won't definitely be one of my future exploits...travelling only is safer and less trying. To illustrate this, my attempt to speaking Hungarian turned out to be quite difficult: I've just learned to say Én Frank vagyok, which is I´m Frank; if you want to ask how are you? you say sth like: "Hogy vagy?", and to say thank you, you go like: "Gay shay ged re" a bit far too long and difficult, you might say. No wonder I gave up and continued communicating in English. No working knowledge of Hungarian, I'm afraid.
Comunicándose con los Locales Los Húngaros son bastante chéveres, siempre listos a ayudar aunque no noté que muchos hablen inglés o
al menos no los que molesté con preguntas sobre direcciones. De todos modos, me queda su voluntad y sonrisa para ayudar, los cuales se tornaron suficientes para asistir mis aventuras desorientadas. En fin, dos cosas que fueron y serán siempre desconocidas para mi son la moneda Húngara y la lengua. Nunca pude deducir cuanto me estaban devolviendo en pesos, cuando me daban florines cada vez que pagaba en Euros; para que tengan una idea por un Euro recibes mas o menos 350 florines y asi, soy muy malo en matemáticas para hacer conversiones rápidas, así que siempre confío en los locales para el cambio. En cuanto a la lengua, pude deducir que el Húngaro es bastante complejo y flexible y tristemente, no estará en mis proyectos futuros...prefiero solo viajar ya que es menos fatigante. Curiosamente, traté de aprender algo de Húngaro, lo cual fue bastante difícil, solo aprendí a presentarme: Én Frank vagyok, lo que quiere decir soy Frank. Para preguntar como le va a alguien: "Hogy vagy?" lo que me suena como Hola, vago 😊 Y si quieres agradecer, tienes que decir algo así como "Gay shay ged re", lo cual resulta un poco largo y difícil, así que
renuncié y me seguí defendiendo en inglés.
The Walking Tour It is not a secret that these countries offer quite in-depth tours for free, and some others are very affordable; paying is fair given the amount of information and funny stories you get in exchange. Indeed, the Hungarian history is so rich that they have a large array of tours depending on what part of their history you are interested in. One of the tours I did was the one on the Buda region, full of hills and visits to amazing castles. The guide assigned to us was well-spoken and funny, she took us up on a hill to show us the most interesting sites of the city, -some of them, quite genuine gems- and told us about the communist Hungary, some sensational stories of Hungarians, information about where they normally stay and hang out, what their favourite restaurants are.
Well, but if you are not very fond of tours, it is up to you to do it all by yourself... but I insist that I don´t know, although the experience might be kind of nice, I prefer to have somebody telling you about the
whole story so that you don't miss lots of information. The facts came across as quite fascinating and sometimes turbulent though. Other times, I felt like going back in time, to the Old Stone Age which I appreciated very much.
Del Tour a pie. Como sabemos, estos países siempre ofrecen interesantes toures donde recibes muchísima información gratis. Sin embargo, es justo buscar aquellos donde pagas algo -muy mínimo- y obtienes unos relatos bastante interesantes, que no encuentras en libros, mientras recorres las transformaciones húngaras. La historia del país es tan rica que ellos se dan el lujo de ofrecer una infinidad de toures dependiendo de la parte de la historia en la que estés interesado. Uno de los mejores toures que hice fue el de Buda con cantidad de colinas y de castillos asombrosos. La guía que nos tocó fue bastante interesante y muy chistosa, nos condujo a una colina donde nos mostró los lugares más interesantes de la ciudad -algunos de ellos casi que tesoros- y nos contó sobre la Hungría comunista y algunas historias un poco sensacionalistas de los locales.
Sin embargo, si no quieres el tour, pues lo puedes hacer tú solo... pero bueno,
no sé, te podrías sentir solo, aunque agradable, te podrías perder datos super interesantes, que me fascinaron escuchar, incluso si a veces, era un poco turbulenta. A veces, me sentí volviendo a los tiempos de la Edad de Piedra, y eso siempre me agrada
Tons of culture, cafés and shopping venues to explore You find yourself strolling lots of ruins, churches or museums displaying travelling collections as if you were watching a great history film and suddenly, you find great cafés nearby. In contrast, the city also offers great pubs, discos and night clubs to cater to everybody´s taste, you see, what are you waiting to travel?. Although I didn't go there on a shopping venture, I did admire a great deal of designer clothes, jewellery and I was utterly tempted to buy some books but I couldn't get away from my main goal: travel light to enjoy the trip and you know what? I did it, this time, for once, I didn't spoil my old back, well done, ME.

en una peli de historia y justo, en la esquina, te sorprendes con cafeterías bastante agradables. Oh, yes, el contraste!! Y he de anotar que la ciudad también ofrece grandes y populares cervecerías, discotecas y clubes nocturnos, ¿si ven? algo para cada gusto, así que anímense a viajar. Aunque no fui allí con mucha intención de compras, pude admirar gran cantidad de ropa de marca, joyas, pero debo confesar que estuve tentado a comprar libros más de una vez. La buena noticia es que esta vez, cumplí mi objetivo: no me dañé la espalda cargando maletotas ya que pude viajar ligero
The Christmas Market The market stalls with local produce are just amazing; there is a great deal of Hungarian artisans displaying an appealing variety of ornaments. I love the Hungarian food, the Goulash was one of my favourites dishes as well as the different kinds of cakes you can order at any café. On another note, when things at the market were lit up in the evening, it was just amazing.
El Mercado de Navidad Los toldos del mercado con productos locales son sorprendentes. Me enamoré de la comida Húngara, especialmente el
Goulash y los deliciosos tipos de tortas que puedes pedir en cualquier cafetería. Cuando encienden las luces en Budapest, tuve una bella impresión del mercado.
Hungarian delicacies Sampling the local cuisine shouldn't be missed and as I said before, the Hungarian traditional Goulash is something you can't miss. A delicious stew seasoned with paprika, Hungary's national spice. You can either have it with meat based or ask for a vegan version, not my choice, though. I loved the former as I travelled in Winter and I thought it was utterly filling. Besides, food stuff is offered everywhere, and if I recall correctly, I thought that never before had I felt so tempted by so much food displayed in shopping centres. Bar terraces, fine restaurants are a must but if your budget is smaller, quality street food is found everywhere.
Los Manjares Húngaros Si vas a Budapest, no te puedes perder la prueba de los manjares del país y especialmente el Goulash. Es un delicioso guiso aderezado con paprika, la cual es la especie nacional. Lo puedes pedir con carne o también está la versión vegetariana que no pedí yo. Lo especial es que como
viajé en invierno pues fue exáctamente lo que estaba necesitando. Encuentras comida por todos lados y recuerdo que pensé que nunca había visto tanta comida en un centro comercial. Las terrazas de los bares, los restaurantes son algo que no te puedes perder pero si el presupuesto es bajo, pues la comida que encuentras en las calles es lo indicado porque es buenísima.
Admiring the majestic Danube Just by crossing one of the bridges from either side, you end up admiring the Danube, which is the second longest river. You could listen to the interesting comments of the tour guides while relaxing in the glass-enclosed boats, sipping cocktails and champagne, or snapping photos of the most beautiful landmarks.

s la majestuosa vista del Danubio, el segundo río más largo de lado a lado. Puedes, si lo prefieres, escuchar los comentarios interesantes de los guías, mientras te relajas en los botes, algunos de ellos acristalados, probando cockteles y champaña, tomando fotos de los lugares más hermosos.
To sum up... • I felt that economically speaking, visitors can
afford to have a luxury life without spending too much as it is quite an inexpensive destination compared to other cities such as Prague or Vienna.
• I didn't spend too long but a couple of days was enough for me to fall in love with the city and the locals, while visiting its most interesting places and having my breath taken away.
• Public transport is quite cheap, and there are lots of mass transit options.
• As for the walking tours, I went along on a sunny day and I loved it. I just wished to have had some live music to complete my package of happiness.
• Working out the Hungarian currency and the language was quite tough, almost impossible.
Para resumir... • Sentí que económicamente hablando, los visitantes se pueden permitir tener una vida de lujo sin gastar demasiado ya que es un destino barato comparado con otras ciudades tales como Praga o Viena.
• No me quedé demasiado tiempo pero unos días fueron suficientes para contagiarme de la belleza de la ciudad mientras que visitaba los lugares interesantes que me dejaron con la boca abierta.
• El transporte público es bastante barato además de otras opciones de transporte.
• En cuanto a los toures a pie, me fascinó el que hice durante un día inolvidable, lo único que me faltó fue tener algo de música en vivo para completar mi paquete de felicidad.
• Tanto la moneda Húngara como el idioma fueron duros de roer.

The Hungarian Parliament Building was the place I´ll never forget; one of the largest and most impressive buildings in Hungary, built in the Gothic Revival style and home to hundreds of parliamentary offices.

This is a city we hope to visit sooner than later. We loved your descriptions and history. We enjoy walking tours also and will likely take a couple while we are there.
