It was nice to come back to Budapest for a visit before embarking on Croatia. It's a place located by the river Danube with Buda one side and Pest the other. Before you say it, obviously I am in the 'Pest' side! :) My accomodation this time is a very petite 2 storey apartment where I can actually live normally for a few days. By this, I mean I've put a wash on, cooked my own dinner and done the dishes. Strangely it felt nice for a change. My location again is pretty central with the Budapest Eye and St Stephens Church minutes from where I'm located. The church won this time and I'm really glad it did. Like all religious buildings, it is wonderfully decorated with amazing statues and murals. However the really lovely thing ... read more

That title could be taken so many ways, especially with no context. But if you understand that I'm in Budapest, and that on one side of the Danube River is the old town of Pest, while across it sits the old town of Buda, then maybe that'll help. Today was definitely not as jam-packed as yesterday, as I woke up this morning to realize that I'm still on vacation, and Iget to set my own hours. So I did what I felt like doing, and it was good for me. I slept until after 8AM, which is kind of a miracle. I normally don't sleep that late in hotels, even after being on this trip for over a month. I've got probably the best blackout curtains of the trip, too, so maybe that has something to ... read more

As this trip progresses, I'm more and more thankful that I changed things up and decided to stay on the ground. That being said, I still plan on visiting Portugal and making my way back to Ireland, which are the two places that I'd planned on going, but my plans changed. Since I deviated from that planned itinerary, though, I have found myself surprised by how much I like the places I've been. Imagine if I hadn't done that... First off, leaving Zagreb was kinda weird. This was my first true rail experience in Eastern Europe, and though I knew what to expect, it never fully prepared me for what happened. I was lucky to find some people to share it with. First off, my "train" turned into train-bus-train-bus-train-metro. The guy at the Zagreb train station ... read more

Budapest! 01/12 There’s no other Hungarian city like Budpest!! At the very heart of Europe, this kidney shaped country claims a unique place in the continent’s soul. Doubters need only listen to the music of Franz Liszt and Bela Bartok, view the romantic Danube River as it splits Budapest in two, or taste the nations unique (paprika infused) cuisine to be convinced! There’s no other Hungarian city like Budapest in terms of size (2.55 million), and importance. But, it’s the beauty of Budapest, both natural and constructed that makes it stand apart. Straddling a gentle curve in the Danube, the city is flanked by the Buda Hills on the west bank and the beginnings of the Great Plain to the east. Architecturally it has enough baroque, neoclassical, eclectic and art nouveau elements to satisfy anyone. Budapest ... read more

We rose early and had breakfast at the Komorski's apartment and then waited for Anna to pick us up for our days journey. Last night Natalia's uncle, aunty and cousins came around to meet us and catch up with Tim. It's difficult when you have no knowledge of the language spoken but we were kept involved and it was a lovely end to our stay. On hearing of our trip to Auschwitz tomorrow, Natalia's uncle was concerned that I didn't think it was a Polish camp, and I wonder if this is a concern to many Polish people. I think most people know the evil behind this. We had a great stay in Poland, largely due to the love and hospitality shown by the Komorski's who kept inventing new ways to make our stay better, but ... read more

We have spent the last five days biking from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, to Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Compared to the neatness and manicured presicion of Germany and Austria, rural Hungary feels raw and rough around the edges. The roads and trails are certainly rough with patches of pavement missing, more dirt trails, and rougher areas everywhere. The bike trail signs are not so plentiful and finding the route is sometimes a challenge. And even though Hungary is officially using the Euro, many vendors only take Forints, the old currency, and give a very unfavorable exchange rate if they do accept Euros. But the people we have met are warm and welcoming and we have managed to communicate with English and a few words of German. For most of this leg, all the way ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, After a magical and unforgettable wedding we spent our first two nights of married life in a hotel overlooking the debauchery of Botchergate, Carlisle on a Saturday night followed by an evening in the romantic capital of England - the service station Days Inn at Newport Pagnell. We were almost too giddy with excitement (even with a 4am wake up) to get on a plane heading to Budapest, Hungary...and so, by popular demand (my Gran said she'd been missing my blogs), here's what we've been up to in this magnificent city. We managed to sleep almost the entire flight which was a real achievement given that Wizz Air's leg room allowance meant my knee kept smacking me in the five-head. When I did manage to eek it into the alleyway, the air stewardess ... read more

We flew into Hungary last night from Malta via Frankfurt and by time we settled into our suite we decided that it was too late for a big meal. However after wandering the streets a little we ended up back at a little restaurant right next door to our hotel and we settled on a cup of Goulash soup. We were thinking more of our version of a cup of soup and what we got was like a little stainless steel bucket. The soup was extremely tasty and along with the lovely fresh bread we were quite satisfied. This morning, once we managed to get our act together we set off to find the hop-on-hop-off bus. It was another beautiful sunny day, slightly cooler then we had been experiencing in Malta and it wasn't too long ... read more

Three days were spent in Budapest - one rainy, one bluebird and one cloudy. We certainly got an all access pass view of Budapest with weather like that! We arrived late on Thursday from Vienna and our first glimpses of the city were not fantastic - outside the Keleti train station with roadworks and dodgy people everywhere... I managed to convince Matt to get us a taxi which, although registered (you have to be super careful in Budapest) seemed to take us all over the place before finally arriving at our hotel - the Fraser Residence. Once we checked in we were told to go around the corner to Corvin Plaza to get some dinner and came across a beautiful shopping centre similar to what you'd see in Sydney. We later found out that this area ... read more

I left the hostel quietly without waking my roommates. The early morning bus out of Ždiar (in the Tatras Mountains in northern Slovakia) left on schedule, dropping me about 20 minutes later at the mountainous border with southern Poland. I hopped off the bus, looking around at the still-dark, empty nothingness, wondering where to go next. To my relief I spotted the only other humans around in the predawn hour - three gals walking up the road a short distance away. They were dressed to perfection, struggling to push, pull, and carry their oversized suitcases on the uneven and icy-slick surface. Turns out, they were also heading to Zakopane. The border was deserted, save for the four of us and our bags. We quickly realized the frequency of the buses slows down considerably in the wintertime ... read more
