And away we go
Not many photos today. Another day spent on a train 😊 I'm ok with that - more than ok.
I love watching the world speed by, or slowly chug-a-long. Varying paces each with their own beauty.
I love the slight sway of the cabin as you pass along the tracks; hearing the rumbling of the train, or the clickity-clack.
I love passing through the villages; I love seeing people go by their lives, watching the old couples sit hand in hand, and I love the kids that wave at the train (you just have to wave back!)
I love the scenery; I love that the train gives you a more "behind the scenes" view of a country's beauty than the highway does. I especially love the lakes and rivers - the tranquility of it all.
I love whizzing through old abandoned platforms; the blur of graffitied walls passing by... sometimes it is just that, a blur.
And in parts of Europe, I love that you can open the big side windows and stick your head out, feeling the wind in your hair. Ah, like a happy puppy in a car.
And I like their little shopping carts they
use to sell drinks. So cute.
...
Ok, ok I'm done. For now 😉
Train ride was lovely. I brought a huge lunch (have to spend all my exta kuna, you know), so I literally ate a giant tuna salad while leaning out the side window, wind in my hair. I almost dropped my salad at one point, that would have been tragic. I also ate a basket full of mystery red Croatian berries. (In the safety of my seat). They were very sour, but quite good.
Passport control is a funny thing while travelling. Croatia just became part of the EU, but we still went thru control in Geyekanes (spelling? no clue). One guy checked, then another guy checked to stamp it, then a third guy checked we had the stamp... and yet not a single question about my travels haha. I had much better than others in my cabin though - yes, the Canadian passport is a wonderful thing.
And you know what else is fun? When a group of 4 French guys come in the cabin and start joking about their day on the beach. I couldn't help it, I was grinning at
Dead Cousin Its
Sorry. It's a FB/instagram reference from my prior discovery that Bosnian haystacks look like Cousin It... *slinks back into the shadows* a few of their jokes... but I kept going about my business, reading my kindle on my phone. The guys noticed though:
Guy 1: "I bet she's smiling because I'm so handsome."
Guy 2: "No, she's probably laughing at your face."
This made me smile even more. They noticed, but kept going on, basically uhm, talking about their macho-ness, their uhm... prowess and skills? Ahem. I managed to keep a straight face for awhile but finally started grinning again while staring out the window.
Guy 1: "See! She's smiling again because she can see me in the window."
Guy 4: "Or she's smiling because she can understand us..."
Guy 3: "She would say something then?"
I smiled again and nodded, all while still looking out the window. Omg hahahaha the look on their faces. That got good and awkward quickly. Awesome. I don't think they said another word the rest of the journey.
When we got to Budapest, Guy 1 lingered so it was just the two of us. In English he asked where I was from. I just grinned and said "le Canada" in a complete French manner. He went like 5 shades of red and replied in french: "ah so you understoood-"
Oh yessssss.
"We were just being... dumb."
I laughed, said no worries and headed off.
See, ladies and gents, you never know who understands the language you speak... especially while travelling, so don't say something you don't want understood 😊
Anyway! Didn't do mich once I arrived in the city - got settled in my hostel and just aimlessly roamed the city for 2 hours with nothing but about 20$ and a metro ticket just in case. I love when I'm in a city that affords that possibility. Wish I had brought my camera though, but I didn't think I'd be gone that long. I love how the centre is so pedestrian friendly here - getting lost in a series of pedestrian malls, alleyways and tiny markets is a wonderful way to introduce yourself to a city. I can't wait for the next few days here - plenty of exploring to do!

Ahh hahaha that's so funny. Leave it to boys to think you're smiling because you think they are "handsome". I was wondering what the berries tasted like! Enjoy your wandering this weekend!
