Another day another glorious bay... Here we are at the end of another 3 and a half month Odyssey in Greece. And sadly we have begun the slow process of packing up the boat.... Yuk!
Time has gone by in a flash and we feel that we simply have not had enough time out here this year. Perhaps the weather has had something to do with it, as there have not been too many HIDEOUSLY hot days - although, as I sit here (in the shade at George's bar) the temperature is in the mid 30’s! We are dreading the next few days in the boatyard.
Or maybe the time has vanished because we have been soooo busy meeting up with friends, making new ones, exploring new places and revisiting old favourites.
We haul out on Monday and so we are doing as many chores as we can in the 'fabulous' (for you Annmarie 😊 ) surroundings of George's (Karnagio, on Meganisi) - where we can come and enjoy some respite at the bar chatting to friends and having a Fredo!
But let me not linger on the downside of the holiday....
We had a fabulous time with Stuart and Margaret
We were lucky enough to see a couple celebrating their wedding at Steve and Jerry's at Spilia. Looked like they were having a ball. Splendid way to get married.... :)and then Cat joined us for a week - she arrived a day early to surprise her aunt and uncle, which was just great! And then Clynton, Lisa and Kayla joined us for just over a week. Kevin was in his element with his Granddaughter and boy, she had him twisted around her little finger... I have never known Kevin to swim so much and shop so much... At her command, of course... 😊
And to add the cherry to the top, our friends - Rob and Joyce (old hand yachties) - who came sailing with us in early June enjoyed it so much that they bought our friend Neil's boat! We have spent the last week sailing in tandem with them and it has been such a delight.
Ooh, I nearly forgot - some highlights:
Swinger (Lynnie's tame feral cat) appeared for breakfast with her two kittens. The kittens had been missing for a month and we had almost given up hope of seeing them again.
Enjoying a glass of Moët with Cat... Courtesy of Cat! ?
Witnessing a wedding celebration at Spilia. It really did look very romantic. A few friends on a
Celebrating Jerry's Birthday and Robin and Ann's wedding Anniversary at Episcopi. Stefani brought Jerry some cake and a candle....yacht - beautifully decorated - and a great lunch at Steve and Jerry's.
We have certainly been whizzing all around the Ionians this year. Up to Corfu and Paxos and then down as far as Sami on Cephallonia. Of course we managed to squeeze in 2 awesome days at Fiscardo. One of the highlights there was our sundowners on the rocks under the old Venetian lighthouse. And we had a great stop Kioni where we finally met up with Kelvin and Sue, on Sawubona.
We enjoyed another BBQ at Episcopi and had several delectable meals at the Cantina there too. Stefani and Theo who own the cantina are the most delightful couple and many pleasant hours can be spent sitting under their awning watching the boats and people - enjoying a glass of wine and mezze!
We discovered the Lighthouse Cafenion on Mitikas and it became a firm favourite for sundowners. The view is very hard to beat and we (the girls) felt just like Shirley Valentine with our table and chairs on the beach (pebbles) a few yards from the water's edge. One of the special things about the little cafenions (a basic cafe that the
Sundowners and mezze at the Lighthouse.locals usually frequent) in Greece is that when you order drinks they usually provide you with a platter of mezze - not just crisps! They mezze often includes marinated small fish (anchovies), olives, shrimps and bread. A veritable meal!
Fortunately we did manage to squeeze in a few days of sailing and anchoring in bays in the south and up in the gulf. It really is very special just swinging at anchor with the only sounds one hears being the cicadas in the trees, or the occasional goat or sheep. Or the splash of someone diving in the water...
Oh where, oh where has the time gone...
One little redeeming factor is that even though we are hauling out on Monday, we do get to enjoy one more week in Greece. We are looking forward to doing some sightseeing inland, which adds another dimension to our holiday in this stunning and interesting country.
One BIG consoling factor is that we get to go home, see the doggies and cat and our friends and family...?
So until next year... Adio...(goodbye)...
