I am at a beach in Karpathos Greece. Sitting on my rented beach chair, with my calloused feet hanging over the side. The tiny gold pebbles chip away at the poor paint job on my toes- an attempt to cover up six months of travel dust. Overhead hangs a blue sky, exactly the type you would imagine present in Greece, and in front of me the Aegean waves rejoice that they have met their destiny ashore. Griff says something about being in a Corona commercial and I laugh lamely, as all of my strength- even to speak- has been pulled from my body and replaced my a Mediterranean warmth. Greece is one of the few places we have gone into with stereotypes and visions of what it would hold. The Greek immigration into America over ... read more

Okay, so I have been on the ferry now for six hours and I am LOSING my cool. I have, and I am not joking, been hit on by 8 men in the past 6 hours. Most of them are over 50, with a mop of unkept hair or none at all, dark leathered skin, missing teeth, gold bling and chinos......I am fearful for my life. They are all trying to buy me ouzo shots and god knows what they want to do with me...I am young enough to be their daughter!!! I have resorted to drinking a bottle of wine so that i may just pass out somewhere and this HORRIBLE journey will be over. The only place I am getting peace is at the net, or in the bathroom. Why oh why couldn't I ... read more

So I am on the ferry to Greece as I type this. At 4 euro for a half hour, I can see this is going to be a bloody costly trip....I have nothing else to do but sit on here. Actually the boat is pretty nice, pool, bar, shops...but being the 'poor' backbacker for 56 euros I have scored myself a night on the outdoor deck....should be interesting seeing i have no sleeping bacg, pillow or warm clothes....hmmm great. Better find myself someone with a spare bed in a cabin- quick! So i left Venice this morning. It was really lovely and relaxing. Did the whole touristy thing....gondola ride etc. Venice is lovely but unless you have a lot of money for eating out and enjoying the city, there isn't much to do. You can walk ... read more

Okay, I know we promised no more London stuff, the day we headed out was so fun that it's necessary to comment on. We spent the morning organizing ourselves and were a bit delayed when I "temporarily" lost my wallet, but hey, I'm always "temporarily" losing stuff, right? The plan was to head into the city, leave our bags at a left luggage drop off and explore until we were supposed to meet up with some camp friends, however, as we reached the top of the Earl's Court Tube station, Frazer Shanks and Alex Ehgartner were waiting at the top. They were actually waiting for the person behind us, a Mr. Nick Raper himself. Anyhoo, it was perfectly timed and we were able to leave our bags at the boys' hotel. The holiday was something about the Saints or the Trinity- an Orthodox holiday. This meant that at the monasteries instead of the hordes of tourists there were lots of Greeks as well. It was really humbling because most tourists take a bus up but I walked a 20 minute trail steep up to the furthest away monastery, this one full of only Greeks. There was a father with the big beard, black clothes, and cross, and everybody was kissing his hand. I felt really out of place, but he smiled at me and I went inside but everybody was praying so I left. The other monasteries were more touristed, but the best thing about Meteora was the rocks themselves- just beautiful, look at the pictures. I thought Thessalonikki was going to be a bad city, but ... read more

We have been going through the Greek Islands for the last few days. Our cruise ship is alright and we are in a TEENY TINY 4 person room. It is mostly retired people on the boat and our Contiki group of about 50 girls and 3 guys. I really have no idea how we have actually pulled this off. So far we have been to Istanbul (Turkey) Mykonos, Kusadasi (Turkey), Patmos and we are currently in Rhodes. The islands are absolutely beautiful. I am hoping to add some pictures once we get to Spain. My time is almost up in this cafe and we have to go get on the boat. ... read more

There is one place in the world that without a doubt easily lays claim to single handily having the most profound effect on the way we live and think today. As the incubator of western civilisation, this country of great gods and goddesses, poets and philosophers, politicians and athletes; has bequeathed modern civilization with the building blocks of our society. I was always aware that English was derived through Latin but what I wasn’t aware of is Greek plays an almost equally important role as the root of the English language. Over a Mythos beer I think I could easily argue with you that Politics, Democracy, History, Physics, Law, Ethics & Philosophy - all words derived from Greek - are some of the most important words in the English Language and have fundamentally influenced our societies ... read more

Aditi finally arrived as her bag was the last out of the airplane today. Aisha, Jeanna, Jessica, Aditi and I (Melissa) roamed around Athens around our hotel. There are miles of markets and stores that sell everything from Cartier jewlery to postcards. We all agreed that the hand blown glass crafts were something that we would like to bring home but not sure if they would make the journey. We stopped at Gyro/Greek Salad place for lunch. The greek salads are fabulous with tomatos, olives, onions and feta cheese in a block. It is hard not being able to understand Greek as the letters are based differently, not like in Italy where you can take a good guess on what your ordering. Many of the menus are in Greek in English, but rumor has it we ... read more

A continuation of my Egypt and Greece trip. Obviously, this would be the Greece part, and in my opinion, considerably less exciting. So stepping off the plane in Athens provided a rather welcome change. It was weird really, as it wasnt just so much as if we were back in civilization (per say,) but it really almost felt like home- as though as if we were back in our own familiar world again. However, this was only partly true and mostly due to a quick but refreshing first glance. The Greeks definitely have their own marked identity and culture as well. It soon became "all Greek to me." Thus, due toe it's somewhat familiar feel, it also isn't exactly as story worthy, so I will try to avoid the day to day, hour by hour rundown ... read more
