Today we do more planning for the time ahead. Tomorrow we will go to Turkey for the day, then we leave to stay on Kastelorizo. Today I found this joint - right next door to the hotel and looking over the beach (and Turkish coast) 100m from the water's edge, with the best internet facilities yet. Inexpensive and real good equipment. It's called Patty's Lounge Bar Restaurant. The bar is also good and I reckon the food will be worth a try.... read more

Hi everyone We boarded the ship yesterdya around 2.00pm. A lot of getting use to the ship so didn't do a blog entry last night. It is now Mon 12 and 8.15am. The ship is rocking very slightly. I was on top deck when the sun when down and was able to photo the sun going down. the wing was great had to lean against the front of the ship to stay upright and hang on to the rail as you walked. I have a great group of people who have included me in their circle. The ship is only rocking slightly. It is easy to get lost on b oard but I feel I now have my bearing as I have walked around on my own and got lost and found my way out. Last ... read more

At 8 we meet a bus for the harbour of Rodos. Here we get on the 2 hour ferry to the Dodecanese island, Symi. First stop, for a look around is at Panormitis. Their museum here indicates the significance of their resistance to the Nazi regime during WW2. It's in a beautiful enclosed and protected harbour. We leave at midday for the main harbour of Symi in the north east of the island. This whole area is yachting heaven - and some mouth-watering craft sit in the harbour to watch. There are yachts going in all directions, to Turkey, along the coast and other islands. Coming home a German lady gives us her spare map of Symi which is fascinating. I would definitely want a GPS around here. The sun's direction as we leave the harbour ... read more

The Cyclades (Ke clad ies) Week 1 Crew: Sam, Debbie, Shirin, Yiannis, Costantinos, Kojo We started our Epic adventure round the Cyclades in Athens. We arrived to pick up the boat on Sat, we were stunned by the number of luxury boats in the Marina, they would give Warren Buffet a run for his money! After provisioning the boat and getting our crap in order we left early Sunday and headed for Cape Sounio, which is South East coast of Athens, unfortunately it was blowing a force 7 (about 30 knots) so we had to anchor up in a bay for 2 days rather than head straight for the islands. We ended up putting 2 anchors down as it was blowing which was fortunate as we had gusts during the night of 40-knots! It was ... read more

Today is really the first time we've come across a reliable internet connection. There is one in the hotel - but is quite expensive and down every time I go to use it. The hotel (Ialyssos Bay) is recently refurbished - completely rebuilt more like - is very modern and luxurious. It's a one minute walk to the beach, in case you can't stand fresh water such as in the waveless pool. The view out of our window is beautiful, looking north across to the Turkish mountains about 10km away. The temperature is superb and great for just padding around soaking up the atmosphere. The photos will have to wait until I can get back home and mount them here.... read more

The last update left you with us boarding a Blue Star Ferry on our way to Naxos, Greece. When people think of the Greek Islands, they typically think of the five most popular islands: Crete, Corfu, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Santorini and tend to overlook Naxos. Naxos is a hidden gem in the Greek Islands. It happens to be the largest Island in the Cyclades group of islands. Our original plan was to spend a few weeks in the Greek Islands and use Naxos as our base. Greek island hoping is extremely popular with tourist and independent travelers throughout the summer months. We choose Naxos because of budget prices and convenience to other islands. We planned to visit Mykonos and Santorini during our stay in the Greek Islands. While we were in Athens, Lynne had called the ... read more

Europe here we come... After leaving Egypt, we were dying for some kind of luxury, familiarity... anything Western really! Tash A was excited as her first 'real' venture into Europe, and a first for both Tash's to Greece. In short, we had 1 week to see all we could of what Greece has to offer! Firstly 2 nights in Athens, The Hermes hotel was ultimate luxury compared to where we had been the previous 2 weeks in Egypt. All booked through Contiki, it's always hard to know what to expect! New Hotel in the Plaka district, close to all restaurants/ cafes/ shopping/ good coffee etc. And The Acropolis around the corner... just perfect. The temperature in the mid 20's was an unbelievable relief. We found Athens a truely fashionable city, cultural and for the most part ... read more

It is said you cannot visit Greece without exploring an island or two. As it was off season, we were unsure if it would even be possible. However, after thoroughly discussing our options with some locals, we were assured that the island of Santorini and its touristic venues would all still be open, and that we'd have a good time and it would be the best option out of all the islands. (So much for Ewa's dream of visiting the 'gay' island of Mykonos, known for its clubbing vibrant nightlife!) Off we went... We took the ferry from Athens arriving at approximately 2am in the morning with no where to go and no plan. We had met two doctors from France on the ferry who had made last minute reservations at one of the island's hostels ... read more

Amongst the ruins we tramped. The occasional tree blocked the sun momentarily. Our feet stirred up a fine, choking dust. The hot, still air let the dust hang there for a moment. Then, if it didn't reach the back of your throat, it lodged in between teeth. I wondered if Santorini would be like Rome. Looking out the Aegean Air jet, doing a flyby of this Waiheke-sized island (pop 12,000 + tourists), the prerequisite barren hillsides under clear skies were getting their late afternoon respite from the sun. The jet lowered and turned back for the final approach. We sunk lower and lower towards the deep navy sea, a brief flash of cobalt blue and rocks, then the black runway cutting through tan fields. A short taxi and we were out on the tarmac. It was ... read more

Days 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 - Santorini So, after leaving Ios due to fog, we pulled into Santorini to see fog covering the cliffs. It was an amazing rolling fog on the cliffs. London fog had nothing on Santorini fog! Luckily we were there for 5 days so we figured it would clear up. It did, slowly revealing the amazing caldera. Each day it got clearer so we saw more and more, until it was clear and we had some great sunsets. Since we couldn't see a thing the first night, we just walked into the city and got a greek taverna meal (Tim had buttered noodles. Buttered noodles...his favorite!) The next morning, hoping to see blue sky and not getting it, we decided to rent ATVs again and go around to the ... read more
