I think if someone forced me to choose which island I would go back to of the three we visited, I would say Santorini. It was beautiful. I loved the way the buildings were built up the side and into the side of the cliffs. We took a ship's bus tour, so we got to see a little bit of the island besides Fira and Oia. The tour started with a tender ride to where we met our guide and a bus to take us to our sights. The bus climbed up a road with quite a few switchbacks that I don't think was built for buses. We drove through Fira and on to Oia. We had an hour to visit Oia. Our guide had us climb up to the main street so we knew where ... read more

Wow, where do I begin about my time in Greece. My two weeks volunteering on Tinos Island were amazing. We stayed in Kardiani, a 45 person village on a steep hill above the sea. We were graciously put up in the community center which had a kitchen, three bedrooms, and a giant dorm-style room on the bottom floor, not to mention an amazing view of the beach below! I had so much fun hanging out with the group of 17 and even the work wasn't all that bad. We spent 5 hours each day clearing a 100 yr old path that led down to the sea. Almost all of it was made of marble steps that snaked down the steep hillside. We had an amazing view and a nice breeze to keep us a cool. When ... read more

Rhodes was not what I envisioned a Greek island to look like. We did not have specific plans today, other than to check out old town. Rhodes old town is a walled in medieval city with cobblestone streets and old and restored buildings. And as a typical tourist trap, lots of little shops and cafes. We had a map, but the map had the names in English and the signs on the buildings with the street names were in Greek. So we got lost. But it was ok, because we ended up finding some interesting places. We walked up the stairs of one museum (I don't remember the name) and found some really cool black and white mosaic floors, patios and rooms. I think it was a hospital at one time. When we finally found the ... read more

Santorini is that picturesque little Cliffside Greek Island that you see in almost any movie that takes place in the Greek Isles. It’s an absolutely gorgeous place where everywhere you look is something to beautiful to take in. It’s quite an effort to get to there though. They have a very tiny dock at the base of the cliff, and that’s about all they have down by the water. So we had to tender there—that means we all pile into very tiny boats that shuttle 50 or so people at a time to the dock. As a crew member this is even more of a hassle because we have to wait until all of the guests get off before we can leave. So when we dock at 10am, we could be waiting around until 1 or ... read more

When the Pacific Princess departed from Patmos, the weather began to change and the ship experienced a few rain showers. But, the next morning arriving in Santorini, the weather had improved under warm and partly cloudy skies. Santorini sits on top of the caldera left from a major volcano which erupted more than 2500 years ago. Its white washed buildings and blue roofs are often used in promotions for Greece because of its scenic beauty. The ship anchored in the harbor not far from two islands which appeared with the past 300 years. Arriving ashore the choice was to ride the donkey train up a path full of switchbacks with more than 500 stairs, or to ride a modern tram right next to the dock where the ship’s tenders arrived and departed. All of our group ... read more

The Pacific Princess sailed into the harbor of the small Greek island of Patmos under mostly sunny and pleasant skies. This was the first port where the ship did not dock and tenders were used to get into the small village of Scala, the commerce center for the island. Patmos is a small island about 18 miles long and only has about 3,000 year round residents. During the summer months its population grows to about 10,000. It’s most famous feature is that it was the place where John the Evangelist was exiled by the Roman emperor in the year 90. John and his small enterouge lived in a cave overlooking the harbor, after apparently fighting with the local pagans in the area so they could stay and practice what was then called “The Way”, or what ... read more

Sunset in Santorini, Anita and I gaze lovingly into each others eyes and turn to look out over the crater, that is the habour of Santorini and that may once have been the lost City of Atlantis. Several cruise ships are docked in the beautiful Aegean sea, the sun reflects of the deep blue water and the whitewash houses on the clifftops sparkle in the setting sun. Exhausted after our journey to the top (me walking and Anita on a manic donkey) we sip the last of our drinks ( a mere $40 for a lemonade and Corona) but it doesn't matter, it is the last night of our cruise around the Greek island, 7 days of pure luxury. The "Cristal" leaves at 8-15pm for Athens, we still have an hour before the last water taxi ... read more

I don't know if all of you "down-under" heard, but summer forgot to visit the UK this year. We had just one or two weekend days of hot sunny weather all "summer". It was the wettest August on record with 60% more rain than normal. So you can bet that by the time our ‘miss the hordes of fat, white & drunk UK tourists’ holiday plan of travelling to the beaches in late September finally came around we were well and truly ready for some sunshine. With the aid of my trusty iPhone I had been checking the weather reports in Athens every day. Sunny with a high of 30degrees. Sunny with a high of 31. Hmmm. All going to plan. The day we arrived in Athens (after a six hour wait at the airport thanks ... read more

We had a little holiday in Rhodes at the beginning of September to coencide with Lara's Google AGM. We stayed in Ixia, near Rhodes town for one week and then in Lindos for the second week. It was a really relaxing holiday in which we did nothing at all exciting. Except watch a whole season of Prison Break on DVD! Check out the snaps.... read more
