The myth is broken!! It does rain in Santorini. We actually knew the weather was going to change because of the wonders on the internet and being able to log into weather.com on the laptop. Anyway it was a good day to rest and catch up on some admin and pigout on the internet which is working in our room. We did venture out late morning to the bakery for bread for lunch and also came back with what we thought was a giant chocolate eclair. It turned out to be more of a elongated bun with chocolate icing and runny chocolate inside but no cream, bugger(cos we were hanging out for it to have cream in it). We lunched on the fresh bread, tomatoes(can't get enough of these) and gouda cheese cut in thick slices and of course good ... read more

A great nights sleep and we awoke to another clear beautiful day with prospects of warm temperatures. Our breakfast purchases yesterday will see us right and cheaper way to go by far than the €5 cost each for breakfast at Pension George.Bringing two plates, bowls and plastic cups as well as cutlery for us both including a super sharp little knife means we are fully equipped for breakfast, lunch and dinner if we want and none of it takes up much room in the suitcase. We even have salt and pepper in a container. We are even thinking of buying a cheap microwave in London when we get our car so we can heat up frozen meals etc. The showers in both Turkey and Greece have presented their challenges. All have beeb showheads on the end of a flexible hose.Occasional we ... read more

Well at least the noisy lot of last night seemed to have moved on and we had a good nights sleep this time around. We had a booking for the 10 am SuperFast jet ferry to Paros where we would make a connection with the Blue Star Paros convential ferry to Santorini. The hot water to our room gave up and there was only cold coming through despite what we did.We boiled the jug and did the best we could without a full shower and decided that our fellow passengers for the ferrries would have to put up with us. We were foiled by the early start as the mini market from where we had purchased bread yesterday was still closed so we ended up with fruit and yogurt to sustain us until we reached Paros ... read more

Friday 1st May Exploring Mykonos We knew the run of good nights sleep would have to end at some point and it was here in Elenis Rooms that was to happen. One of the problems with tiled floors and hard surfaces for walls is that any noise is at least trebled.!! And so it was to be from the early hours until 4am other guests(we have another name for them that is not printable)kept arriving home and banging and crashing their way into their room through the front door and their adjacent bedroom door as they came from home from the nightclubs nearby. We had taken count of the number of bedrooms on our floor and that had numbered six.Now we were tucked up in bed so that made 5 rooms to fill at worst. We gave up after ... read more

Let me paint a picture for you, okay? Santorini is watercolours, oils and graffiti painted not on canvas but on the eternally blue, flat surface of the sea. It has colour Athens doesn’t (which is so refreshing), though still the base of all is the same: Mediterranean white wash- but haphazardly splashed with reds, blues, yellows and donkey shit. This place redefines beautiful as we have seen ‘beautiful’ thus far on our trip, which like a complex strain of the flu- is always evolving; with each bout stronger and more powerful. I’ve come to realize that I am now at a point in our travels at which I am truly happy. This happiness is not coming out of lack of happiness prior to now, not at all. But I seem to now be able to live ... read more

some more photos from santorini. also thanks again for all the comments....if we don't reply to them personally doesn't mean we don't read and appreciate them...good internet access is surprisingly sparse in europe as a backpacker so we have to be frugal with our time. actually we are also being frugal with our money, and long gone are restaurant meals and nice guesthouses...we are slumming it up in backpacker hostels and buying food from the supermarket and sitting on plastic bags on the grass to eat (yesterday in roma we were chowing down on half a chicken and dry biscotti in front of the main train station Termini, sitting on plastic bags on the asphalt, and got quite a few snobbish looks from the italians dressed in prada and gucci...) miss you all lots xxx jian ... read more

Thursday 30th April World famous for its windmills - Paros to Mykonos We awoke to any beautiful, calm day.We are now expecting the weather to be like this every day and I dare say we will be most upset when we do eventually strike rain again. The BBC news continues to be doom and gloom about swine flu although they don’t want to call it that in Europe as it will affect their pig trade. So while we are listening to what is being said we have decided not to concern ourselves until we come across people wearing masks. What more can one say about Greek yogurt. It truly is delicious,so creamy and thicker than the plastic like stuff we are used to in NZ.Bring on more of it !!We are going to be looking for Greek yogurt even when ... read more

Wednesday 29th April Chilliin’ out on Paros Another day in paradise was ahead for us as the day dawned bright and clear with no wind again. Watched the BBC who are trying to scare us with the Swine Flu outbreak in Mexico. However the Greek Islands seem so far from the rest of the world that it is hard to believe that it could affect this area.Although we realise that with travel around the world so easy it is only a matter of time before we come across warnings and even people wearing masks as the alert heightens. One must just take all precautions and we have our hand cleanser and wipes and can avoid big crowds other than when we are travelling. Our self made breakfast was delicious again with Greek yogurt and fruit plus a very ... read more

Hello everyone, We have just finished our five nights on Santorini. It is a lovely island. Very hospitable and beautiful. When we got up yesterday morning, I opened the door to our house and a dog was having a lovely nap on the padded seat just outside our door. It was a very friendly dog and loved the attention. It had to jump our wall to get in. Yesterday we visited the volcano. The walk was only 1.5 km but it was all up! It is very barren but the view from it was great. The guide explained that when the volcano erupted in about 1500 BC, it was 40 times the force of Krakatoa and created 250 metre Tsunamis (the Thailand Tsunami was 15 metres). By the time it reached Crete 4 hours later, the ... read more
