9 am we met Tony and Manolos at the front of the restaurant. Tony suggests coffee at the beach. So we each hopped onto the back of a moped. They took the senic route overlooking the cliffs of Santorini 300m high with stunning views of the caldera while overtaking buses, cars and other vehicles. We don't have any pictures of this due to the priority of holding on for dear life. Mom, you and Amie now have matching tail-pipe burns :) We ended up in Parissa beach on the other side of the island and enjoyed some iced coffee with our new friends. An hour later, they left for work. We stayed on the beach a little longer, dipped our toes in the black sand ocean before heading back. The rest of the day was spent ... read more

We were welcomed to Santorini by hords of hotel owners who decided that we should stay at their establishment. But we choses the basics of 'Camping Santorini' which included hard beds in a two person tent without pillows and with plenty of little bug friends. We hadn't had a decent meal since the plane ride so it was time for some real Greek food. The cobblestone streets of Fira (Thira) boast plenty of fine Greek restaraunts and tavernas. We were starving and allowed ourselves to be suckered in by the first restaurant host to approach us. The place was 'El Greco'. Half a liter of wine and lamb souvlaki later we find ourselves chatting to Tony, the manager of the place. A complimentary glass of wine each is brought out. Tony sits down and talks to ... read more

We're on the fabulous island of Santorini. The population is about 2000 ppl according to Lonely Planet and I think that half of the population here must work in jewellry stores and tacky tourist shops. I'm a bit mystified by the number of jewellry stores here... do women get their men to buy them baubles on vacation?? I must admit that I had this misconception that Santorini was filled with these blue-domed buildings. These, I've actually only seen on churches. The rest of the buildings are white-domed but no worries... there seems to be a church every kilometre or so for your phototaking needs. Two things I have to rant about in greece: bikinis and showers. 1st. bikinis. the new fad around here seems to be this new bikini bottom. Its smaller than a bikini bottom ... read more

I love Santorini! It's a great place to chill out, watch amazing sunsets, get a tan and get in shape. After one night in a hotel too far away from the town, I went hotel shopping and found an amazing hotel right on the cliff of the caldera in Firastephani called Agnadema Apartments. My palce is a palace compared to the other places I've stayed, so I decided this was a good place to plant myself for 10 days (why not, right?). I've toured the beaches (Mykonos' beaches are much better), walked from Fira to Oia (2hrs of hills along the cliff), and each night watched the sunset, rating which one is the best (still can't decide). Read Kite Runner in a day and a half and have now found time to get all my updates ... read more

Arrived last night in Santorini after taking the milk-run ferry that stopped at almost all of the islands between Tinos and Santorini (even the ones with tiny ports... I've seen more boats in a kid's bathtub than in some of those places) it was great weather though and we saw the sunset from the water. Today we're going to check out some of the villages and try to get to Ancient Thira, there are some ancient Egyptian things there I would love to see. The view from our hotel is magical, bright blue waters and white houses, little lounge chairs and the buildings trickling down the cliffsides. Leslie and I are going to look into doing a tour to get up close and personal with the dormant volcanoes. Who remembers Dante's Peak? Oh btw this has ... read more

Flight from Athens to Santorini today, and after our transfer left my suitcase at another hotel (I think that bag is cursed), we arrived at our hotel overlooking the caldera (the volcano that exploded and filled up with ocean). I have to say that all of the pictures of Santorini cannot possibly do justice to the breathtaking views of this island. Tiny white and blue houses built on the cliffs surrounding the caldera, with a sheer drop into the Aegean. Santorini is by far the most beautiful island I've ever been on. As an additional plus, since we arrived after the Easter holiday, we appear to be in between tourist seasons - it feels almost deserted at our hotel. I don't know if its the air here (which doesn't reek of cigarettes) or the more relaxed ... read more

Didn't have a brilliant night's sleep, so we were both pretty tired this morning. We weren't 100% certain what we were going to do today, particularly when we walked into town and it was sooooo windy. I was constantly getting grit and dust in my eyes, so it was hell for Beck with her contacts in. Over another gyros we decided to stick to our original plan and head to Perissa. We had to wait a little while for the bus to Perissa, but it must be said that the buses in Greece are very reliable and comfortable. Each bus has a driver (obviously) and an attendant who collects the money. We originally had the idea of going to Akrotiri as well as Perissa to see the museum/archaelogical site, but we had reliably been informed that ... read more

I woke up and it was still dark. Checking my phone for the time it said 05.15, so I grabbed the camera and headed for the rooftop of the building to see if the moon was still out. It was a pretty impressive sight seeing the moon go down in the exact same fashion as the sun had only a few hours earlier. Hopefully the photos turn out ok. I headed back to bed for some more sleep before the alarm went off for breakfast. We took our breakfast on to the roof and admired the view once more before going back down and packing for our volcano trip. I took charge of directing us into finding Rob and Katie's hotel and duly got us lost. We managed to find it though not too long after ... read more

The car had to be back by ten, but we didn't get up in time to do anything much with it. We were satisfied we had seen everything we had too anyway. The family who runs Hotel Grotto is so nice, and even though we have only stayed one night we are so impressed by how friendly they are. Part of our stay was a complimentary breakfast, and wait for it - they had cereal. It was by far the best breakfast we had had in Greece, and my muesli fix was just what the doctor ordered. There was also natural yoghurt which was bitter, but also very nice. After breakfast we walked the streets looking for a camera shop which would charge our camera battery. After running out of camera shops, and there were lots, ... read more

We should've mentioned earlier that Greece was -along with Australia- a focal point of planning our worldwide jaunt. From the beginning, we both longed to visit Greece, for both the history and the scenery. This is where the island of Santorini comes in. Many people have spoken well of the Greek Isles, and there was never any doubt that we would end up on one of them. Couldn't have picked a better one than Santorini. Along these lines, it is time to give credit to Mau and Meris for their decision to join us in Greece for the holidays. Their generosity and zeal for travelling paved the way for a great trip to Santorini - not to mention the rest of Greece.....Thanks!!! We landed in the small airport on Santorini around 9pm and our host from ... read more
