After a few days on the island we think we may have mastered the art of relaxation! This is such a unique place we are absolutely loving it here!! We arrived Sunday early morning after a 26 minute puddle jumper flight over here from Athens. Yesterday we hit up the beach and just swam and layed in beach chairs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. As if laying on a beach isn't relaxing enough, here in Santorini they have BEDS and COUCHES with huge fluffy pillows right on the beach! It's a dream come true!! Our hotel is right on the Sea and our room has a balcony overlooking the Sea. We could get used to this. Today we went on a self guided tour of this island via a four wheeler. We both agree it was the ... read more

Got a dune buggy today with Mom and drove all over the island. Went to Perissa Beach and the Red Beach then back towards the hotel to Kamari Beach. Just driving around mostly then went up to the mountain town of Pyrgos and checked out the crazy maze of streets and got lunch. Split a pizza and each had a drink. Can't believe I have never been up there. Maybe my favorite place on the island. Took a little nap this afternoon and then the whole crew drove to the other end of the island to Oia and watched the sunset and Mom and I returned our buggy. Going to get some wine/beer, crepes, and gyros in Fira in a few minutes. Love this place. Anyway, not much to write since I have been here many ... read more

So yes, I'm obviously in the Greek Islands still, happy as a clam. I don't want to leave them. So instead of thinking about that just now, I will take this 15 minutes and quickly tell you about Paris the second time around. I also forgot to mention a rather funny thing that happened. Jono and I were walking one day in downtown Berlin, and a girl passed us. My first reaction was "God, I hate that girl she's so tall and skinny! And she looks like Sarah Hoyles." We kept walking for a few seconds until someone tapped me on my shoulder, and asked if we were from Canada. It was in fact Sarah Hoyles! We went to school together for a short time at the U of A, I believe she graduated when i ... read more

Our day started at 9:00 with a wait at the bus stop for our tour bus. We then headed for Pyrgos and the highest point on the island, Profitis Ilias. Most of us weren't terribly interested in the view of Santorini island from this vantage point as we had been there the day before but our guide, Dana, pointed out the Monastery (closed to the public as it is down to only three monks) which we thought we had missed but which was actually a very ordinary looking building that I thought was part of the military installation on the peak. One good thing about going up with a guide is that she explained that the traditional churches are white for the waves with blue domes for the sky. Dana also explained that the houses used ... read more

Here I am, mxing up my geography again...posting photos of Egypt while writing from Greece. Considering the hours it would have taken to do this in Egypt versus the minutes it's going to take here, I think I have a good excuse this time. We've been in Greece for almost a week now. This was supposed to be the "relax and recuperate" part of our vacation, but despite the nice weather and great scenery (ink-blue sea water surrounding picturesque islands) Greece is a little fast-paced and impersonal for our liking. Admittedly, the island life is better than Athens so we're warming up to it. Aside from eating Greek Salad and drinking Ouzo every day, there's not much else to report. After seeing the Acropolis, we've decided that no ruins in the world will ever compare to ... read more

We rented a car to see Santorini and headed out with a really crappy map for Ancient Thera. Since our map only had two basic roads on it we initially ended up by the beach in Kamari and saw our first black sand. We then looked up and saw the EXTREMELY winding road that led to Ancient Thera above us and headed up there. There were switchbacks every two or three car lengths on a cobblestone road and, as the driver, I kept hoping we wouldn't meet anyone coming down. We were lucky and made it to the top without any problems. I really enjoyed visiting Ancient Thera, maybe because there were only four in our group and few tourists as well so you could work your imagination. Maybe because there was enough of the walls, ... read more

We have just spent three days at Santorini since our last visit to the island some 8 years ago. The changes are enormous. The back of the island that swept from the caldera rim at between 300and 450 meters down to the airport and the sea, which was traditionally held in small farming blocks and country side, is now an extending urban development. New houses are being constructed everywhere but thankfully all are required to conform to Santorini house designs which at least restricts high-rise and non-Greek glass development. The other noticeable change is white and blue are not the only colours that people paint their houses. Now there are yellows and reds and warm earth colours, which make an interesting change to the Greek character of Santorini. Saying it’s Greek is a bit of a ... read more

We are still in Santorini but have moved to Kamari Beach. Our hotel is wonderful and seems very fancy when compared to some of our other places. We planned it this way and it has worked out well. The hotel has a swimming pool and the beach is 10 steps away. There is a great breakfast every morning. Jessica is in 7th heaven as they have yogurt, honey and fruit. Greek yogurt is very different but tasty. It is very quite here and we are just lazing around before we head home. We met some girls from Calgary and one turned out to have been Jessica's union rep from IGA. Yesterday we went to a Wine museum and tasting. Santorini is known for the wine that is produced here. The wine was not our style, but ... read more

Our first real vacation in 3 years, and what a place to spend it in! We headed to Kamari beach on the Greek island of Santorini. There we learned what it was like to be lazy again. We spent the first 3 days laying by the pool or next to the ocean soaking up the sun. We'll take as much sun as we can get considering our skin hasn't seen it in 3 years (and definatley won't for another year--yeah for Englands weather)! One week just wasn't enought, but we did get a good tan started. We stayed at a wonderful hotel called the Bellonias Villas. They also have the best pool on the beach with a spectacular view. It was nice being able to switch back and forth from pool to beach. The beach was ... read more

We are happy to report that after two days we can now sit and stand without pain. We are in beautiful Santorini now. It is an amazing island with so many wonderful views. The trip here was not so wonderful however. The travel agent booked us on a high speed ferry from Crete to Santorini which took 2 hours instead of the normal 4. She did not mention that it would feel like being on an amusement park ride. The ferry took off from the port and the ride was smooth till they picked up speed. The water started coming over the windows of the boat and we started slamming into the waves. People in the boat started gasping as we went up and down over the waves. We were not expecting this from the ferry ... read more
