We have been playing in the Greek islands for the last few days. After our fantastic last meal at Lithos restaurant we departed Athens early the next morning on a fast ferry to Mykonos, the weather was perfect, beautiful blue skies and equally as blue waters. We were looking forward to meeting up with Aimee and Whitney from work, they had just finished a 49 day bus tour of Europe, you can imagine they were a little tired, but they still managed to entertain with us with stories of their adventures! We were also meeting up with Lisa from work and her friend Jo. Lisa loves the Greek Islands and didn't want to miss out on any of the fun, so she took holidays and came too (as you do). We meet up with the girls ... read more

Mykonos is beautiful! Lots of shops and scenery. This is the easiest stop on our cruise. Lots to see, but very leisurely. Nalynn is having a banana daiquiri at 11:00 am. Great Greek breakfast! Take care, Arlyn and Nalynn ... read more

This is by far the most fun I have had writing a blog. The reason is…. I am sitting in a comfortable chair on the deck while our ship is moving through the beautiful Aegean Sea. It is dark, quiet and peaceful. I can hear the water and see stars and distant lights on the shore. We left Turkey yesterday evening and spent the day on Mykonos Island, which is part of Greece. Our excursion today was to the island of Delos. It was regarded as sacred by the Greeks because it was the birthplace of Apollo and Diana, the god of the sun and the goddess of the moon. They were born in a lake on the very small island. At the time of the destruction of Delos, there were 50,000 inhabitants, a HUGE number ... read more

This is a planned day off by the pool, no wind at all today so a late breakfast and off to the pool, we lazed around, read and slept a little, got cooked in the sun and loved every second of the down time. Off to Nicks Taverna on the beach for dinner (highly recommended) and only a 5 min walk along the beach from our hotel.... read more

Dead calm this morning not a breath of wind, today we hired a quad bike to cruise the island and headed off to a place called wild beach. The little quad is just great for getting around fine for two people and small enough to park most places, is great fun, no helmets just cruising. Getting somewhat lost on the way seems to be part of the fun and the street names in Greek are hard work and they are tiny on the island, many only wide enough for one vehicle but you do manage. So we first came to the only “village” on the island which has this great monastery dating back to the 1600 and in great condition, very different to a church and we spent some time there. The island in general is ... read more

Port of Piraeus near Athens After a long flight from Seattle with stops in Philadelphia and Zurich I arrived in Athens, tired but ready to start experiencing a new part of the world. Athens airport is about 90 minutes by express bus from the port of Piraeus. I use the term express” loosely because it really isn’t far in actual distance but the traffic is terrible. Along the way I was amazed to see mile after mile of empty store fronts and small abandoned strip malls. Many of them appear to have been built within the last 10 or 15 years and have large plate glass showroom windows with nothing to show. I have read news stories about the economic troubles here in Greece, but unless one sees it in person it is hard to comprehend. ... read more

It's a four hour ride to Mykonos...we had to be in the port at 8 o'clock ...so we left at seven as they said it could be heavy traffic. Everything was going smoothly until we came close to the port...cars everywhere everyone trying to overtake each other....it was like peak hour....Once we got into the port..there was no parking or drop off areas..everyone just stop wherever and you need to get off quickly ...the taxi driver and I were at the back of the taxi when...we heard screaming....apparently Carmen opened the door and a old man on a bike tried to push through so she squashed his hand...ouchhh ...no wonder he went off at her...the taxi driver told him off for pushing in....Once the drama was over...we picked up our tickets and boarded our ferry...we had ... read more

Well after all the other exciting stuff we told you about in our last blog we are now settling into cruise life and a new port each day. For those interested we are on a small ship, (450 passengers, consisting 12 Kiwis and even a Princess – not Kiwi -) Seabourn Odyssey is a 6 star rated ship. Our cruise is for 14 days and commenced out of Venice heading to Istanbul Turkey. By the time you read this we will have visited the respective ports we have mentioned. We have been lucky enough to have been invited with a select group to a dinner hosted by the Captains management team. A great evening with a multi course menu and great wines. Simon being an engineer was keen to see the engine room so he asked ... read more
