This is a planned day off by the pool, no wind at all today so a late breakfast and off to the pool, we lazed around, read and slept a little, got cooked in the sun and loved every second of the down time. Off to Nicks Taverna on the beach for dinner (highly recommended) and only a 5 min walk along the beach from our hotel.... read more

Dead calm this morning not a breath of wind, today we hired a quad bike to cruise the island and headed off to a place called wild beach. The little quad is just great for getting around fine for two people and small enough to park most places, is great fun, no helmets just cruising. Getting somewhat lost on the way seems to be part of the fun and the street names in Greek are hard work and they are tiny on the island, many only wide enough for one vehicle but you do manage. So we first came to the only “village” on the island which has this great monastery dating back to the 1600 and in great condition, very different to a church and we spent some time there. The island in general is ... read more

Port of Piraeus near Athens After a long flight from Seattle with stops in Philadelphia and Zurich I arrived in Athens, tired but ready to start experiencing a new part of the world. Athens airport is about 90 minutes by express bus from the port of Piraeus. I use the term express” loosely because it really isn’t far in actual distance but the traffic is terrible. Along the way I was amazed to see mile after mile of empty store fronts and small abandoned strip malls. Many of them appear to have been built within the last 10 or 15 years and have large plate glass showroom windows with nothing to show. I have read news stories about the economic troubles here in Greece, but unless one sees it in person it is hard to comprehend. ... read more

It's a four hour ride to Mykonos...we had to be in the port at 8 o'clock we left at seven as they said it could be heavy traffic. Everything was going smoothly until we came close to the everywhere everyone trying to overtake each was like peak hour....Once we got into the port..there was no parking or drop off areas..everyone just stop wherever and you need to get off quickly ...the taxi driver and I were at the back of the taxi when...we heard screaming....apparently Carmen opened the door and a old man on a bike tried to push through so she squashed his hand...ouchhh wonder he went off at her...the taxi driver told him off for pushing in....Once the drama was over...we picked up our tickets and boarded our ferry...we had ... read more

Well after all the other exciting stuff we told you about in our last blog we are now settling into cruise life and a new port each day. For those interested we are on a small ship, (450 passengers, consisting 12 Kiwis and even a Princess – not Kiwi -) Seabourn Odyssey is a 6 star rated ship. Our cruise is for 14 days and commenced out of Venice heading to Istanbul Turkey. By the time you read this we will have visited the respective ports we have mentioned. We have been lucky enough to have been invited with a select group to a dinner hosted by the Captains management team. A great evening with a multi course menu and great wines. Simon being an engineer was keen to see the engine room so he asked ... read more

Greek Islands 16 to 23 June 2013 1. Mykonos 16 to 18 June 2013 We are in heaven! Perfect weather (hot, cool breezes), hill-top views, killer sunsets, beautiful food, fantastic restaurant, waterside dining for people watching, southern beaches for partying, ATV motorbikes for travelling around (Euro15 for 24 hrs), lovely Greek people, and magnificent accommodation. Do we need anything more – yes, to have the family and friends around would be perfect! We organized our ferry and accommodation after we arrived in Rafina. For anyone who doesn’t want a cruise, fly to Athens, organize the ferry to the islands you want to go to at the Rafina Port – much cheaper! Even if you don’t organize your accommodation on before you go, there are many sales people touting for your business re accommodation. So easy. ... read more

Today we boarded our cruise ship. The cruise ship has a swimming pool, multiple restaurants, a gym, shops etc. Although it's sounds amazing it's an old boat so not that flash on the inside but still good for a first time. We headed to Mykonos Island which took about 6 hrs to get there, so we just chilled out on the cruise ship until then. I think I mentioned it in the last post but we only have 13 people in our contiki group. It's a bit too small for me personally but hopefully it will get better. Mykonos is amazing, it kind of looks a bit like Santorini with white houses and blue trims except it is also famous for it's windmills! Our room is tiny but the beds are pretty comfortable. Anyway I won't ... read more

Tuesday May 14th, 2013. Mykonos, Greece The island of Mykonos lies between Tinos, Paros, Naxos and Syros in the Souther Ageean Sea and they all form part of the Cyclades Island Group. It is recently become a very popular tourist destination and the island is served by low cost airlines including Easy Jet from the UK. The island boasts many beautiful beaches with white sand and clear blue waters. Mykonos is a fairly small island - just 33 square kilometres, with only 10,000 year round residents. Settlement on this island dates back to the early part of the 11th century. In the early 20th century the island relied upon fishing as its primary industry but now it is tourism. We had another posh breakfast and then caught the $5 shuttle from the New Port (where the ... read more

Hello again! We arrived in Mykonos in the morning and sailed across in a tender to get to the Port of Mykonos - too many other ships around and not enough berths. After looking up some of the shops - some well known designer shops in some streets and all types of sales on.. could be dangerous so we stopped for an early lunch at a little place in town - we had a traditional Greek Yiros - oh yum...!!! and while we were sitting there another Australian couple came and sat next to us with a yiros too, they'd seen ours and decided they wanted one too. Interesting couple who had been travelling around Europe by train for the past 7 weeks - they regaled us with their stories of train travelling and places they ... read more
