Well it’s been a while since I wrote last because our internet has been really spotty. We didn’t have it in Tinos, and now in Mykonos we have to pay for it. On Thursday we left Crete and got on an overnight ferry to Pireaus (Athen’s port). That ferry was really rocky because it was so windy. At least we were sleeping for most of it, so it wasn’t that bad then. We arrived in Pireaus around 6am and then proceeded to get on another ferry for Tinos. The ferry to Tinos was only four hours or so, so it wasn’t too bad. It was really wavy though, so it was kinda hard to do anything. We got to Tinos around noon and went to our hotel. The hotel was right on the water-front, which was awesome. The weather for the two days we were in Tinos wasn’t the best. It was really windy the day that we got there. We just kinda wandered around the town. Lots of tourist shops, and a lot of them not open because it’s not the high season yet. On Saturday we had a tour of the island of Tinos on a bus. We went
all over the island, so that was pretty neat. The main thing that is there is an Orthodox Church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 1822, a nun living on the island had four different visions about Mary and an icon of her. In 1823, an archaeological team, led by this nun’s visions, found an icon of the Virgin Mary. So this church was built in honor of this icon and that nun who had the visions. That church was amazing! It had hanging lanterns all over the church and icons everywhere. The original icon of Mary that the church was dedicated to is now covered in jewels that people have bought to place on the icon, so the picture on the icon is no longer visible. Anyways, we also went to a few small villages on the island. Nothing really special there, but it was neat to get out of the main city on the island. Then the next day, Sunday, we left for Mykonos around noon. The ferry ride was only about half hour, so it was nice because then we had the rest of the day in Mykonos to do whatever. The town here in Mykonos is
awesome! And our hotel is great. It’s right on the water and it is all whitewash. There are the whitewash buildings everywhere, and it is what you would think of as typical Greece. Bright blue water, sunny skies, and whitewash buildings. It’s gorgeous. A lot of the stuff was closed on Sunday though, but it was nice just to walk around town. While we are here in the islands we are on our own for dinner (all of the other places we have had a group meal that has been prepaid). It kinda sucks because then we have to pay for dinner on our own, but it’s kinda nice because then we can do what we want. So on Sunday night Erik, Brock, Ingrid, and I went to a local restaurant. I didn’t get anything traditional Greek though… I got spaghetti carbonara. It was delicious though. We also had a house wine which was also very good. Then we just went back to the hotel and hung out. Then yesterday we had a free day 😊 Ingrid and I just walked around the town for pretty much the whole day. We didn’t really do anything, just walked and talked. All
the shops were open though, so that was nice. I bought another necklace that is mother of pearl. So I was pretty excited about that. Later in the day, a huge cruise ship came in, so the island was just swarming with American tourists. I was actually embarrassed to be an American. They were just so loud and rude! And it just made me appreciate all of the cultural immersion we have gotten so I hope we aren’t that rude and don’t stick out that much. When we go into shops we are kinda able to communicate with the owners. At least say hello and how are you and ask how much things are and what we want, so that is nice. And I know the owners appreciate this because they are used to tourists that are just there to shop and enjoy the weather, which we are here for that too, but also for cultural stuff too and learning. Anyways, then when we got back from walking around, I laid out by the pool for a while because it was super nice. And I went swimming. It was super cold because the pool isn’t heated, so it was about
50 degrees, but it felt really good to cool off after sitting in the sun. And it also helped that I was with Cameron and Linka who really wanted me to come in swimming with them. Then for dinner, Emily, Ingrid, and I just went to the super market and got bread and cheese and ate at the hotel. But anyways, then today we took a day trip to Delos, which is a small island near here that is just an ancient archaeological site. It was pretty cool because it was so big, but it wasn’t really anything new because of all of the other sites we have seen that have been similar to that. Then we came back to Mykonos and I worked on my site report that I will have to do tomorrow or the next day when we are in Santorini, and now I am just laying down by the pool 😊 Hopefully I’ll be able to put up pictures soon once we have good internet!
