I didn’t know this, but the famous statue, Venus de Milo, which is in the Louvre, was actually discovered on the island of Milos. Kind of makes sense when you think about it. There is a movement to get the statue back to the island, where some think it truly belongs. I’m not sure the French will give it up so easily, not without a fight. We decided to rent a car in order to really get a sense of the island and to explore. It’s not that expensive, about $25/day, and talk about no hassles. The guy showed up at our hotel, we paid him, and he handed us a key. He said to just leave the car at the hotel on the day of our departure, and suddenly, we were mobile. There were two ... read more

One thing you notice when you first stay in Europe is that the bathrooms are different. Not just in size, which is generally smaller, but in style. They look hip and stylish, albeit smaller, with the showers tending to have the hand held head, which can be nice at times. The toilets also look and work differently. In fact, when I first encountered them, it took a few moments, at least it took me a few moments, to figure out how the things worked. The flush mechanisms are often on the wall behind the seat, and there are two settings, a low flush for #1 and a big flush for #2. There is usually less water in the bowl than what Americans are probably used to, leading to an interesting bathroom experience, to say the least. ... read more

We have settled nicely into a wonderful groove on the island. If we'd had more time, we could have become even more comfortable, but you can only do so much in three days. We are enjoying ourselves immensely, and were sad to leave. The section that we are in is called Pollonia, and it is quieter than the main port of Adamos, though clearly you can see that they are gearing up for the tourist rush. Not a bad way to be, actually. You work like a dog for three months dealing with all sorts of tourists, and then you get 8 months off to vacation and travel. How can you beat that? It sure beats working like a dog in America 60 hours a week for a company that will fire you in a heartbeat ... read more

I am having trouble with Blogger, so my posts have been inconsistent. Sorry about that. We spent our last half day in Athens scrambling to find myself a patch with the Greek flag. In the past, I’ve collected pins with the national flags and pinned them to my backpack, and then proceeded to lose them all, which is a bummer, because the pins are cool, and we gotten them from some pretty cool places, but such is life. My new plan is to buy patches, and then sew them on. Problem solved, as long as I manage to actually sew the things on. The city was really nice in the AM, again, not unlike NYC. Cool, quiet, and peaceful, though only a handful of vendors were open at that hour. The ones that were open were ... read more

We left the calm serenity of the western Peleponese for our overnight in Piraeus awaiting our island experience. Getting into Piraeus was about as fun as driving into Paris...not so much. We were shocked by the numbers -and the persistence- of the beggars on the streets. We were bombarded by squeegee adults -and children- and amputees banging on our windows for money. Between that and the apparent lack of available maps for the area, we were lost. Thankfully we found a man in a garage with no English who grid his best to get us in the right direction! We found our way and happily got rid of the rental car and continued to our hotel on foot. It took most of an hour to get there, but we were happy for a safe place to ... read more

As always, we now join you from some random location in Europe. This time, it's back in our favorite city in all of our travels, Berlin. Last time you heard from us, we were on our way to beautiful Greece. We will now fill you in on everything in between then and now... We arrived in Athens late at night and ended up having to take a bus into the city center. Our first impression of Greek people turned out to be quite negative. We hopped on the bus and asked the bus driver for two tickets, to which he told us that we had to buy them at a kiosk about 25 meters away. I, Rob, ran as fast as I could to grab our tickets. I quickly made the transaction, started on my way ... read more

The Cyclades (Ke clad ies) Week 1 Crew: Sam, Debbie, Shirin, Yiannis, Costantinos, Kojo We started our Epic adventure round the Cyclades in Athens. We arrived to pick up the boat on Sat, we were stunned by the number of luxury boats in the Marina, they would give Warren Buffet a run for his money! After provisioning the boat and getting our crap in order we left early Sunday and headed for Cape Sounio, which is South East coast of Athens, unfortunately it was blowing a force 7 (about 30 knots) so we had to anchor up in a bay for 2 days rather than head straight for the islands. We ended up putting 2 anchors down as it was blowing which was fortunate as we had gusts during the night of 40-knots! It was ... read more

We arrived in Milos last night after a trecherous ferry ride from Santorini! The ferry was scheduled to leave at 9:45pm, but arrived about an hour late! We didn't arrive in Milos until almost 2am. The ferry was rocking pretty violently the whole three hour trip. Needless to say, neither Joe or myself were feeling very well by the time we arrived! On arrival we had scheduled "a transport" from the port to our hotel, since we were to be arriving so late. As scheduled, the car was awaiting us when we arrived, with a little sign with "Lemos" on it (that's always fun!). We loaded up our luggage and began the journey of 1 street block to our hotel. Yes, thats right, it was one block! We spent 28 euro to go a block!!! Of ... read more

Hi again. We are in Milos now and having a great time. A few dramas getting here though. Our flight to Athens was late arriving due to a storm and we missed our connecting flight to Milos and there were no more seats for 3 days........... Managed to get a ferry the following morning so have lost a day here but not dwelling on it..... The island is beautiful and we spent the day yesterday on a sea kayaking tour. We paddled 12kms and were applauded by the others in the group (all experienced kayakers) as we battled some strong winds in a few places. It was great as we got to stop at some deserted beaches not accessible by land due to the huge cliffs. It was a greeat day and we were very proud ... read more
