On the rock throne. According to greek mythology, it is a blessing from the gods for two people in love to sit together on the rock. We arrived in Milos last night after a trecherous ferry ride from Santorini! The ferry was scheduled to leave at 9:45pm, but arrived about an hour late! We didn't arrive in Milos until almost 2am. The ferry was rocking pretty violently the whole three hour trip. Needless to say, neither Joe or myself were feeling very well by the time we arrived!
On arrival we had scheduled "a transport" from the port to our hotel, since we were to be arriving so late. As scheduled, the car was awaiting us when we arrived, with a little sign with "Lemos" on it (that's always fun!). We loaded up our luggage and began the journey of 1 street block to our hotel. Yes, thats right, it was one block! We spent 28 euro to go a block!!! Of course, we didn't realize it would only be a block when we booked it, we just knew it would be 2am and cold! Oh well. We arrived and that's what is important.
This morning we awoke to the "storm" that the news has been promising. Thankfully, as of yet, there has not been any rain. But today was VERY windy and pretty damn
fishingvillage
cort braving the wind at a small fishing village in Milos cold. We finally did see some sun today about 3pm. We're pretty bummed about this because MIlos is a "swimming" island. The "beaches" here are pretty much made for great swimming and snorkling. Keep your fingers crossed that the weather will turn around for us to get into the water at least once before we depart on Thursday afternoon.
Today we rented a car (for much cheaper that we did no Santorini) and explored half the island. The coastline is beautiful and rocky-like nothing we have at home. We went to an area called Sarakinikos which is made up of "moon rock" as the greeks describe it. And it looks just like that-rocks from the moon. Tomorrow were going to the catacombs and the plaka (which is basically the town center) and to check out some more of the island. The weather is suppose to be warm again by Wednesday...so we'll have to see!
The island is bascially pretty dead. We feel as if were entirely alone most of the time. There are 3222 residents of the island, and from what we saw today, Joe and I are guessing there are about a few hundred tourists. Pretty much
church
a Small church in the town of Pollina everything is closed down for the season. Everyother restaurant is shut down until the spring, and our hotel told us today, that once we leave, they shut their doors for the year...("You the last customers for us.") When my travel agent was helping me book a room here in Milos, he told me there were only two hotels on the island left open! Now that we're here, we believe it! The lack of people though is nice, like I mentioned, we'd be completely happy if we could get some swimming weather. Our room here is significantly less luxurious than our last! No jacuzzi on our balcony and no amazing view to look out at. Its clean though, with breakfast included and close to the few restaurants that are still open. On our drive today we came across some pretty amazing bed and breakfast places that locals bascially run out of their home. Most of them are just beautiful buildings with incredible views. We're thinking about moving here and buying a place and running a little bed and breakfast for the summer season, then heading home during the off season. We'll give you all great discounts when you come visit!
Sarakinikos
The "moonscape" landscape of sarakinikos. Bubba and Chloe-there are significantly less kittens on this island than on Santorini, but I've still found a few I want to bring home! Most of the restaurants have big bowls out with water and food for the cats. It's so funny how there are so many wild cats around and the communities over here just take care of them-everyone just pitches in too feed the plethera of cats! I think I was Greek in my past life and have just carried over my love for cats to this life. Joe got mad at me at dinner because he said I can't go 5 minutes without talking to a cat! Chloe is still my favorite and my baby though...we miss her!
More later...we miss you all!
