This is the spot to view the famous sunset on Santorini
Walk to Oia at the end of Santorini

Roger had some stuff he needed to do so I headed off alone for this one.

I left early, 7.30 am, to walk from Fira to Oia. It was a really good walk around the edge of the caldera and took about 3 and ¾ hours. It began climbing up to the highest point of the caldera winding through several other villages. Some of the little streets passed through absolutely fabulous looking villa hotels. I noticed the “Relais and Chateau” signs and the “Small luxury hotels of the world”. As you would expect the outdoor furnishings/landscaping looked great with the odd whitewashed small boat for decoration, fabulous outdoor furniture and lots of manicured pot plants. Sadly I left the camera back at the hotel.

The last section of the walk was quite exposed as it crossed quite a steep volcanic hill- black gravel. It was hot here and I had visions of that scene in the movie Crash where the Mexican woman is lost in the desert!

For the rest of our time on Santorini we hired a car and visited the other parts of the island. Roger drove

and we stopped at other villages on the island. They were quite different to the traditional style of Fira. Funnily enough, at times I felt like I was in one of those swish seaside resorts in Asia. Thatched umbrellas with banana lounges on the beach- you can spend all day for 5 Euro!

Boat trip to Ios - 1 hour 18 Euro
Very windy
Can hear yells from a bar in the distance: Australians booming out “Oi, Oi Oi”. Makes us want on get back on the boat. This island is filled with young people who live on the beach by day, many at a resort called “Far Out” with duff duff music blaring. They then invade the village at night and party till dawn. Luckily we have finished our 9.30 pm or so dinner in the village and are back home before it all starts. Roger is a bit disappointed by that I think!

Moving on today to Naxos
