This is my favourite spot on the itinerary. It has great historical sites in the vicinity, good shopping, lots of great restaurants, awesome gelaterias and an inviting atmosphere without the plastic you get with a North American tourist trap. It also has good swimming and an ok beach. I understand there is a better beach around the corner, as well. We started our sightseeing by taking a taxi to Palamidi castle. It was well worth the 5 euro not to have to climb the 999 stone steps leading up there in 25-30 degree heat. The view was amazing and the castle enormous. We walked around for a couple of hours without seeing it completely as we found out later that some of our group had seen things we missed. The location is extremely defensible, perched on ... read more

Hello Everyone! We found a great pension/domatia in the Old Town of Nafplion with both a great view of the Bourtzi -the photos of it are from our balcony :) and the fortess Palmidi which we climb, all 999 steps to the entrance and then it had to be another 999 up to the top and then it seemed 10,000 back down in the afternoon heat:0 The fortess was built in 1715 and then was conquered 3 years later (lousy investment) I guess it was not the best design but it was so way cool. We then went to the Epiderues Theatre. It was built in 4th century and sat 14,000 and the ausictics were amazing. The one time everyone could hear leslie sing, its a good thing we'll never see those people again. Someone could ... read more

Hey all, Here are some more pictures of our time in Italy and a few from Corfu. We left Corfu yesterday and have made our way to Nafplio (crossing the area that was apparently hit by an earthquake last week) in Greece. Tomorrow we go to visit the ancient site of Mycenae to see some amazing ruins. All I can say is that WE LOVED CORFU!!! Great weather, beautiful beaches, good food, friendly people... we had a very nice vacation from our vacation ;-). We were there two and a half weeks and I finally finished up my PADI Open Water diving cerification. The four dives were incredible; crystal clear water, lots of cool fish and the best part was I didn't horribly embarrass myself by making some mistake and having to be rescued. We look ... read more

Well friends, it was a sad day leaving Pelekas Beach in Corfu. We camped at Gouvia Bay on the East Coast and then rented a car to tour the island since I have no faith in Mark's scooter skills (sorry darling). We drove to Sidari up North but too touristy and the beach wasn't as nice as some we had seen. We lucked upon Pelekas Beach on the West Coast of Corfu and fell in love! I've been to Thailand and India and I've seen amazing beaches but this beautiful sandy beach with it's crystal clear water ranks on the top...not a lot of tourists...and the best lodgings I've ever had. The Rolling Stone...remember it folks...it's a bit like Shangra-la. The Lonely Planet review says, "The psychedelic windchime on this joint's massive terrace is the most ... read more

And so to Athina...Finally out of the airport and on our journey in our rental VW gripping on to seat as Rob drove on left side of car and on the wrong side of the road!!! Motorists here are crazy, with no obeying of the road rules or speeds, it is free for all, so i hang on for dear life as we enter Athena, an old tired city expanding for miles beneath the majestic Acropolis on the mount. Roaming the corridors of the city, up and down laneways, paved with a variety of tavernas, mixing modern with the old traditional, it isn't hard to find a cold Mythos (greek beer) and greek delicacies.. rob hanging out for a traditional souvlaki like back in melbourne! only they serve them here with bread and chips... as we ... read more

It's argos actually. Napflion is the gold coast of the Peloponnese. Sunday. everything is closed for easter. We pick up our car and we decide on the spur of the moment to go to Delphi before the pel. All along the way there are spits roasting whole lambs. In every village there are industrial quantities of these spits. out on the footpath over an open fire. easter is big here. We get to Delphi. It's only when you get to greece that you get some idea of how the landscape and geography shaped the development of civilisation. It literally is mountains with valleys in between. Imagine Newcastle but at Merewether, Kotara, Wallsend and Mayfield is MT Sugarloaf just rising out of the flat. And Mt Sugarloaf is barren with only limestone rocks showing. and there is ... read more

On Saturday we left Delphi and drove to Olympia. In Olympia we went to the ancient ruins of where the first Olympics were. It was so cool! The ruins looked just like all the other ruins that we had seen, except we were actually allow to climb all over the rocks, so that was really neat because at all the other places they have ropes blocking the ruins off and people with whistles everywhere yelling at you if you get too close. But here, it didn’t matter; we could climb everywhere! It was really awesome! There were a lot of ruins too. And hardly anything was restored. In the main temple there, they restored one pillar just to show how it used to be, but left the rest of the temple alone. So I thought that ... read more

Hello ladies and gents! I am in Greece. I arrive in Athens rather late Tuesday night because I missed my connecting flight in Brussels and had to wait 5 hours for the next flight. So far I've only spent one day in Athens and will tell you more about it on a later entry. For the past 2 days I've been in Napflion, only 80 miles from Athens but itseems a world away. Located in the Peloponnesian peninsula and spared from the recent fires, this small town is very popular with Greeks as a cheap and convenient alternative to the islands. While there are no great sandy beaches, it is rich in history and postcard pretty. It was chosen as the first capital of modern Greece in the 1830s and it is 30 minutes from the ancient ... read more

NAFPLIO Beautiful Greek town on the mediterrranean with a Venetian castle standing guard above it, on a clifftop. In its hay-day, Nafplio was a thriving Venetian port and the architecture of the buildings in the old town along with its "piazza" make you feel like you might still be in Italy. Swimming was amazing. Warm, clear, calm water. People were very friendly here, the view from our balcony was top notch, and we had a few excellent dinners at small family restaurants: stuffed grape leaves, fresh (not frozen) calamari, rabbit in tomato sauce, and stuffed lamb. We also took a day trip to Ancient Mycenae (pronounced Mikenas). I'm sure everyone saw Brad Pitt and the Myceneans battle Eric Bana and the Trojans? Anyhow, this place was the Myceneans home base, and was even settled by humans ... read more

HI everyone! We're currently in Nafplio -- this is our first full day here. Last night we arrived here about 7pm after: taxi bus boat bus bus yuck. the last bus we barely had any AC on and it was packed. We're staying in a really cute hotel, but i wouldn't exactly call it that. It used to be the apt/house of the current owner, and she made it into a hotel. There are exactly 5 rooms. Anyways, we had dinner last night and went to bed basically. We had a nice breakfast at the hotel which was wayyyy too much food. It's pretty surreal here: I can't really describe it and perhaps never will be able to. It's like combining an old town in a movie, say, in Italy or something and crossing it with ... read more
