Unlike most of out trips, this time we are only away for two weeks.Summer has practically ended in England and we were feeling starved of sunshine and adventure! We chose Greece as its not long haul and Skiathos came highly recommended. We prefer places that have a choice of beaches where you can get away from the crowds and nice walks. This island fits the bill perfectly. A good proportion of the island is covered with dense pine forests. We spent the first few days exploring the beaches closest to our studio before trying ones further away. Practically the first we came across was Banana beach, as we clambered around the rocks from Big Banana to little Banana beach we realized rumours we'd heard about it being a naturist beach were true. The coast line was ... read more

Day 19 - Mon. Oct. 10 - Port of call: Myrina, Greece. Weather: Sunny with scattered clouds, temperatures of 79°F/26°C Today our port of call is Myrina, the capital of the island of Limnos. The island lies approximately 40 km from Turkey and southwest of the Dardanelles where the Gallipoli Campaign took place in 1915 during the First World War. The island was a staging area for the British and French naval and army expeditionary forces. The port facilities at Myrina are small and there is no pier large enough to accommodate even a small cruise ship like the Prinsendam so we had to use the tenders. I must say the tenders that are on board are much roomier with wider hatches, making them easier to board and debark. Sitting offshore we could clearly see the ... read more

We did our own thing today and set off for the fortress overlooking the city of Mytilini. It covers an area of 20 hectares. The site was inhabited from antiquity starting with Justinian (6th c.BC). Its current form is the work of the Gattelusi and Ottoman rulers. Within the fortress there was a rulers residence, ammunition depot, a Christian church, and two mosques, a military hospital, a large cistern ane other buildings. It was a very interesting site with a great view over the city. It was also very hot. After walking around for a couple of hours we headed towards the waterfront for something to eat and a cold beer. We found a nice restaurant where there were the fewest smokers.... read more

The first thing I intended to do with this blog was to write about the last trip my husband and I took just this last fall, September-October 2015. It was a magnificent adventure, a tour that included cruising between Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea, beginning in Athens and winding up in Istanbul. But, things being as they are, it seems like the next adventure is rapidly approaching and it’s hard to look back when looking ahead. But, looking back, I’d have to say I my best memories were of the archeological sites on this trip. The Island of Delos was my likely my favorite. Delos was populated between from around 3000 BC to 3 AD, eventually under the auspices of ancient Greece then Rome, with raids during Mithridates' wars against the Romans in 88 and ... read more

PANORAMAS: Samos Harbor and View of Samos from the road to the new Samos Marina One of the things we love about traveling in the islands is riding the local buses. It's such a delightful activity. Needless to say, the scenery is often spectacular. The bus drivers and the onboard ticket sellers can be anything from delightful to frazzled. The mix of locals going about their daily lives and the many clueless tourists trying to find their way is always a good show. Such was our bus ride from Pythagorio to Vathy. Greek music was on the radio and the driver was singing along happily. The ticket seller was frustrated trying to communicate with tourists in a multitude of languages. The locals were loaded down with shopping bags full of groceries. Special stops were made for ... read more

Overnight we cruised 185 nautical miles at an average speed of 15 knots and this morning found us anchored off the Greek island of Chios. Yes, anchored, rather than berthed, so that meant being taken ashore in small tender boats to one of Greece's largest islands. Chios is known for its citrus orchards, mediaeval villages and groves of mastic trees. Well, yes, the island does have lots of interesting things to see but, being one of the largest islands, they are located all around the island and ... we didn't book the shore excursion. This was one destination that probably would have benefitted from a little bit more forward planning?! We could have looked into hiring a taxi to run us around the island, or been really adventurous and attempted the local bus network, but we've ... read more

A very lazy day at sea as we sailed 402 nautical miles - at an average speed of 13 knots - from Marmaris, Turkey to Thessaloniki, Greece. Tonight it was the Captain's dinner which is traditionally a formal evening. We dressed up to have our photo taken with the Captain before attending a cocktail party at which Captain Nikolaos Chalaris welcomed everyone aboard and introduced the Head's of Department who help him to oversea a crew of 500. The hour long cocktail party - at which we were offered a single canape and just one Buck's Fizz! - was followed by the Captain's Dinner in the Compass Rose Dining Room. I thought this might be a special set menu for the Captain's Dinner, but we had similar fare as last night with choices from two appetisers, ... read more

Molymos, Lesvos, Greece 18th August 2014 “My soul is from elsewhere, I'm sure of that, and I intend to end up there.” Rumi It's my daughters 25th birthday. I stuffed up our Skype appointment with my miscalculation about the time difference between Australia and Greece. So it goes. At least I know that my parcel from Konya reached her in time. And through email today I read that she likes it a lot. Molymos is beautiful. The Aegean Sea is gorgeous. Swimming is fantastic. Greek yoghurt is to die for. And …. it's fig season. This means that figs are freely available wherever you walk, ripening before your eyes asking to be plucked and consumed. Yesterday after yet another wonderful fresh fig and yoghurt breakfast, I feasted on more fresh figs on my walk home from ... read more
