In both Bosnia and Romania I had been told by people that I needed to do the "UFO tour." In Bulgaria, just outside of Veliko Tarnova, rests the middling remains of a communist conference center, once the biggest and most unique building in all of Bulgaria, now the relic of a repressive time. And, you guessed it, it is shaped like a flying saucer. I arrived in my hostel in Veliko, the one that was meant to provide said UFO tour. They provided it, yes, but I found almost instantly that interest in it was rather low from the other guests. They all preferred to do rock climbing and horse back riding; you know, normal stuff. I like weird stuff. A shame, because I had come to Veliko solely so that I could see communism in ... read more

Early morning we arrived into Santorini, Greece from our ferry at 2am without any accomodation. We were planning on climbing up a hill to see Santorini with the sunrise but when we arrived we realised that it was a huge impossible hill especially with our packs. We slept in the waiting area on the benches until the buses started again and we could check into our hostels. Suprisingly we all had amazing sleeps and headed to our hostel. I think i had worked Santorini up in my mind so much so when we drove through to the hostel i was so disappointed as we didn't see anything that looked like the postcards so when we arrived at the hostel we weren't that psyched to be there. But we got on or togs and headed to beach ... read more

Sorry that things have been abit quiet from me latley. havnt really had chance to write anything. At the moment we are on our last voyage with southampton as the end port, so the 18th will be the last time I see southampton untill I finish. With regards to that, I got some news from head office that my contract (as with alot of peoples) has been cut short by two weeks, so I now finish on the 20th November. This is a bonus in several ways; aswell as giving me 2 more weeks at home, just the fact it is in a different month makes all the difference in my head. Also originally I was meant to cruise across the atlantic, do 2 american ports then fly transatlantic back home, which would have killed my ... read more

Took the shuttle to town centre and went shopping at the flea market. Very old narrow streets. Walked down to the beach and Maddy went swimming fully clothed. It was hot. The water was warm. Got a little lost trying to find the beach. Pretty relaxing day.... read more

Lazy hazy beach daze allowed me to rekindle my love of sea glass. Will found several pieces and Marika was our unparalleled sea glass queen. Amanda’s blog brought sea glass back on my radar months back, - long dormant since my childhood Christmases in Barbados. Marika seemingly has sea glass radar, unearthing the tiniest visible speck in a cacophony of shells and pebbles, rounded and rolled by countless waves. Some force makes it illegal to count sea glass – it is simply a contradiction in terms – finding and loving sea glass is all about NOT counting how many pieces one has – but oodles enough for Marika to make ornaments, jewellery, hanging glass or whatever she wants if anything after we get home… Teresa and Sebastian and their adorable little boy Anastazi (?sp) are the ... read more

“Easy easy” implying nice and slow and relaxed and not to worry. Another day where the big decisions involved whether or not to expend the energy to reach for a cool sip… is it time to play in the Ionian surf with Marika, lie on the beach and do quizzes with Will, hunt for sea glass among the smooth stones and shells with Marika and Will, play crib with Kim or just turn the page of whatever that book is I am reading.... read more

Bigger waves today gave us the chance to show the kids how to bodysurf – it was a blast. Then we took our blow up raft out and Will then Marika rode the big waves with me holding on. Today was a beach and hang out and chill day. A peek at Trip Advisor pays appropriate tribute to the food at Taverna Sebastian – his mother is the force behind the over-the-moon Greek cuisine using regional fare. The tavern is large, tiled and brightly dotted with yellow and blue linens and very, very popular!!!. It is all, of course, outside and utterly shaded by their lush (!) grapevine which covers the tavern and from which they make their own wine each fall – enough for 1,000 litres with a good harvest sys Sebastian. We were fortunate ... read more

I had my first taste of being on the sea through the night when I went from Copenhagen to Oslo, and most recently with Marika Will and Kim last year in the Caribbean. I love it – really, really love it – the rolling black seas, wondering what swims beneath, glimpses of dark shapes in the distance that may or may not be land and twinkling lights from other ships. When I awoke in the middle of the night I spent a long time just standing and gazing out. That made our 6:00 wake up even earlier. Quick change and munching bananas to a one we went out onto an upper deck to greet Corfu as we neared. At stern the Greek flag whipped in the sunrise. Marika and Will each spotted pairs of dolphins behind ... read more

Little did we anticipate the beauty of Greece in the Spring. The wildflowers, lush green vegetation, snow-covered peaks, and cool evenings were a pleasant surprise. The olive trees were in bloom with clusters of tiny white flowers that had a subtle sweet fragrance. Hillsides were covered with yellow, blue, and purple blossoms. Red and yellow poppies were abundant in all the fields. The air had a wonderful aroma. This was not the summer-time Greece that we usually see in the islands. What a beautiful time to be here. Our journey began on the island of Corfu, followed by a road trip through northern Greece and the Pelopponese, and ended back in Corfu. The beach resort of Paleokastritsa was as lovely as ever, but with cooler temperatures and very few travelers. It was our homebase while in ... read more
