Taken from the top area of Corfu
Magical views from a lot of areas in Corfu Corfu is an island in the Ionian Sea being the second largest of the Ionian Islands and very close to Albania - only 3 - 23kms away depending on the breadth of the straits.
After disembarking, eight of us bargained for taxis to show us around the island - we learnt long ago to go to the back of the line of taxis as they charged much less and gave you more options and time- the front ones were assured of a fare for the day whereas the back ones weren't. Anyway we got to see some magnificent sights that we may not have seen otherwise. Our drivers were Alex - who is a singer and had the music up loud and sang along with the music and Dimitrious who was a little more laid back and conservative - both were good in their own ways and spoke excellent English.
The drivers stopped at the fruit trees along the way and showed us the way the olive oil is made, gave us some limes, lemons, some other unidentified fruit and some mouth watering figs - straight from the tree yum! Our taxi driver even had a packet of hand
Note the heart shaped cove
Things to look at while having a coffee - what a view. wipes for us afterwards - how organised was he!
They stopped at a cafe/restaurant near the summit of the island and wow what a view - can't believe on all these islands that they have such brilliant, magnificent views - incredible. At the restaurant we had coffee and some had Cumquat cake and others had Orange cake. We have the cook's card and she will send us the recipe when we are back online and send her our email - so look out!! Not fattening at all......much!
After stopping at several places to take photos and hear the history of each area and stories about the Muslims being ousted by the Venetians at one time we left our taxi drivers - or rather they dropped us in the old town where we stopped for a typical Greek lunch. God it was good - love Greek food. Had Tzatziki with bread and greek salad, Saganaki, Zucchini meat balls, fried Zucchini and Calamari and squid between us all - so after shopping for an hour or so we headed back to the ship. But on the way John saw some boys playing cricket so went and watched and took some
Our group of 8 touring Corfu
Great fun day with great fun people photos.
Prior to that we had seen 3 - 4 taxis close by so thought we'd catch one back to the ship. But none were in sight when we actually needed one. and by this time there was only the 4 of us, Mary, Ann, John and myself so we thought we'd walk until a taxi came along..... only one came and went past and none of us stopped it.... so we ended up walking about 5 - 6 kms back to the port. Funny part was - that once we went through Immigration there was a bus to take us maybe about 200 metres to the ship..... after all that walking....! Exhausted we went to our room and John wanted to go for a swim so we went to the pool and while he swam I read my book (iPad)
We went to dinner tonight at the Manhattan Restaurant on the ship as it sailed away from Corfu and met up with Kate and Paul from Newcastle, New South Wales. We had a great time chatting about our respective travels. They had boarded a couple of days ago at Venice for their first cruise and so far
have been enjoying it but wanted to know a few clues about things so were happy to tell them our experience onboard ship.
They suggested after dinner that we all go along to the pool party where a band was playing and people were dancing... we stopped for a drink with them and then headed back to our room.
Another fabulous day of our holiday.
