We see the view from our hotel in daylight for the first time. It‘s spectacular. The town of Paleokastritsa is on the west side of Corfu, and our hotel sits high on a cliff on a peninsula overlooking the stunning looking Paleokastritsa Harbour. Our hotel is very big and quaint, and could almost double as something from a 1950s movie set on the French Riviera. There’s a light well in our bathroom, and we try hard to ignore the slightly disconcerting noises coming through the windows from the bathroom next door. I know we’re not here to watch TV, but if we were we’d need a telescope to see it from the other side of our room; I didn’t know they made TVs this small. We get in the lift. The floors are numbered 1, 2, ... read more

Today we have a nice easy day of travelling to Corfu. This will involve a gentle drive to the airport, followed by a quick hop to Athens where we’ll have about an hour to stroll around the airport before our short flight to Corfu. There we will pick up the hire car we’ve booked, and take a leisurely drive to our hotel. We’ll get there in the late afternoon, just in time to wander down to a waterfront taverna for a few drinks and dinner, before retiring to our hotel balcony where we will gaze contentedly out at the sea. What could be simpler and more relaxing than all that. We arrive at the airport early, and all is going nicely to plan. But wait, it seems that our flight has been delayed. No problem, we’ll ... read more

We are fast asleep when I hear the dreaded alarm bells. The Captain announces that a fire has been detected and he will keep us informed. A few minutes later he tells us that there is smoke in the incinerator room and the crew is determining what has happened. Now it seems that a fan belt on an electric motor has broken and the motor has burned out and collapsed creating the smoke that was detected. Everything is now under control and we can return to enjoy our evening. Should have been hard to get back to sleep but it wasn't. We awake at 6:00 am to thunder and lightening. We're approaching Corfu and the weather does not appear to be cooperating. We sail through a band of heavy rain and I thank HAL for providing ... read more

Little did we anticipate the beauty of Greece in the Spring. The wildflowers, lush green vegetation, snow-covered peaks, and cool evenings were a pleasant surprise. The olive trees were in bloom with clusters of tiny white flowers that had a subtle sweet fragrance. Hillsides were covered with yellow, blue, and purple blossoms. Red and yellow poppies were abundant in all the fields. The air had a wonderful aroma. This was not the summer-time Greece that we usually see in the islands. What a beautiful time to be here. Our journey began on the island of Corfu, followed by a road trip through northern Greece and the Pelopponese, and ended back in Corfu. The beach resort of Paleokastritsa was as lovely as ever, but with cooler temperatures and very few travelers. It was our homebase while in ... read more
