Ok so my friend Stav - who is Greek - gave me the rundown of what to see and what to eat in this part of Crete (I mean, he helped me pick my itinerary as a whole, but specifically here) - I didn't doubt for a moment, and he didn't steer me wrong. Falasarna is absolutely STUNNING and so much good food around here. I'm sure tomorrow will be more of the same. So this morning I left Chania pretty early in order to get to Falasarna before the crowds - it's only about an hour drive, so nothing wild. Sure enough I got there perfect time (around 9:30) there were still some "front row seats" if you will, comfy lounge chairs and umbrellas. Since it was still quiet I went out into the water ... read more

You can return to the text anytime. Friday 11th May: a rather overcast day so we didn’t want to head directly to the beaches and instead went to one of our favourite places near Kissamos; the ancient site of Polyrinnia. It’s only 7 kms out of town and, even better, if one follows the road sign in the centre of Kissamos Polyrinnia is at the end of the road: no satnav required. Sadly, the cafe at the archaeological site wasn’t open so after we had climbed up to the acropolis and back we had to go elsewhere for lunch. We drove ... read more

An easy 28 mile journey through the mountains; via the spectacular Topolia Gorge where the road is reduced to a single lane tunnel along the wall of the gorge. This time the traffic light control system wasn't working so access to the single lane section was manually directed. Then we went up and over a ... read more

Sunday 10th September 2017: up before the crack of dawn, 2.30 am to be precise, in order to ensure that we arrived at Bristol Airport well in time to catch our flight to Chania at 06.30. One slight hiccup en route when we took the slip road off the M4 to get onto the M49 only to find a police car blocking the access to the M49. We ... read more

As we didn't want to travel too far and, also, to get some exercise we decided to walk part of the Topolia Gorge and to have a look at the cave shrine close to the southern entrance of the Gorge. It was less than 10 miles from our hotel to the Gorge and we stopped to take some photos at a car park near the northern entrance of the single ... read more

Delicious seafood in the open air on the jetty of the pretty little harbour. In the afternoon we decided to go somewhere close that we had been before and knew to be good: Polyrinia a Dorian and Byzantine citadel only 7 kms from Kissamos that ... read more

Nukuin katkonaisesti, mutta riittävästi. Näin aamulla Merkuriuksen ennen auringonnousua. Kävimme pääkadulla aamiaisella. Vuokra-auto tuli aamulla.

Following yesterday's rain, they said it would be nice today. At least the heavy rain overnight had cleared the air leaving the early morning sunny. Today's trip would take me off-piste, away from the tourists and certainly away from the guidebook. I was planning to step back in time by about 5000 years! The start of my time travel was the Bus Station. The bus, when it came, was a result of the 2000 Athens Olympics, so I had now travelled back 12 years. Twenty minutes after boarding the bus, I alighted in a little village called Koleni. There was little there and now, I had travelled back a good few years more! With the petrol station to my back, I took a track through the olive trees and, in the hot morning sun, reached the ... read more
