The romance of long distance train journeys has been well and truly wasted on me. The Trans-Balkan Express is the now misnamed service from Budapest to Thessaloniki, 15 years ago the route would travel through the former Yugoslavian countries in around 24hrs, now it winds it's way across to Bucharest and Sophia finally arriving in Thessaloniki 36 hrs after departure. It's a long time to find yourself on a train with no company - I was the only passenger using the sleeping carriages for most of the way. The most scenic areas of transit are passed through in the dark, with long hours suffering the wait at border control. I slept a months worth and demolished all the books I took with me. Mivel viszonylag az elsok kozott erkeztunk meg a 2, szemeszterre, ezert sok olyan ember van, akit megismertunk, megszerettunk es mar el is mentek. Kezdem talan veluk, akikkel az elso 2 hetben a legtobb idot toltottuk. Ilija, a bolgar regesz srac, aki idegenvezetest is tartott nekunk Thessalonikiben. Helen, az eszt pszichologia szakos, aki nagyon jo fej, de sajon elment egy Ionninaba, egy masik egyetemre, itt csak a nyelvtanfolyamot vegezte el. ...ahol barmit is elintezni 10szer annti ido telik, mint otthon es ez nem a nyelvi problemak miatt van. A gorogok keptelenek valamit egyszeruen, vilagosan megszervezni, vagy egy kalap alatt, gyorsan elintezni. Foleg az egyetemen! Megerkezesunk napjan mar rosszul indult minden. Majdnem haza is mentunk. Ugyanis a fogadoleveunkon csak majus 1-ig volt megjelolve az itt tartozkodasunk ideje, amit a gorog fogadofel ala is irt. Most azonabn az Erasmus irdoaban kitalaltak, hogy legalabb 3 honapig, avgyos majus 16-ig itt kell maradnunk, kulonben nem kapjuk meg az osztondijat. (Amit amugy mar megkaptunk.) Hiaba mondtuk, hogy otthon viszganak van, amit kesobb nem lehet letenni, ez nem hatotta meg oket, szerintuk vizsgazzunk le itt. A kolink a campustol 25 perc gyalog, vagy 5-6 buszmegallo. Egy forgalmas utca lakohazai kozott talalhato ez a 7 emeletes kollegium, melyben csak Erasmus hallgatok laknak. Mi a hatodikon egy 2agyas szobaban, melynek ablaka egy kis ytcan keresztul a tengerre nez. A bentlakok mostanaban erkeztek/erkeznek vagy szeptember ota vannak itt, Europa minden reszerol. Talan legtobben megis a spanyolok es a lengyelek vannak. Es minden felet tanulnak, de foleg bolcseszkarosok. Van egy magyar srac is, Marko, a 2.-on lakik, illetve most koltozik fel az 5.-re csovezni, aki vegzos jogaszhallgato Szegedrol. Mar sok hasznos tanaccsal latott el bennunket. A szobak (szobank) viszonylag jo allapotban vannak, azonban a kozos helysegek iszonyu retkesek es lestrapaltak. Bar mar kezdunk hozzaszokni. The Romanian hills are scattered with medieval-looking homes. Heavy stone, small dot of a window, big roofs. A very mystical and creepy fog is pouring up from the ground. It's so thick, the figures of horse-drawn carriages and herds of sheep are just silhouettes. Note: was the heavy door chain and padlock given to us by the conductor supposed to make us feel BETTER? Thessaloniki's a big city but probably quaint compared to Athens. Scooters and motorbikes drive on the sidewalks, in the pedestrian crossings and right through red lights. Cars recklessly park on the city sidewalks! It's very cheap here and I think we're the only American tourists in town. One big personal obstacle: We had a possible pregnancy scare!
