Though I really enjoy visiting supermarkets in foreign countries, there are benefits to visiting domestic supermarkets as well. But the point is, do not overlook the supermarket for a worthwhile adventure while on the road. Over the years, we have discovered some really interesting gift items and experiences. One of my first visits in a foreign country was in London back in the 70s. I found the "Wagon Wheel" brand on boxes of produce. The Sorensen family were near and dear to our family since they managed my Grandmother's farm in Sanger when my family was sent to a WW2 Relocation Camp in Gila, Arizona. Sadly, I think the brand is gone, but the Sorensen's live on! Often times, I see our Kingsburg based Sun Maid brand of raisins in places all over the world, like ... read more

We can’t quite believe that today’s the last full day of our nearly three month jaunt. Half of me wants to stay here in the heat of Europe. The other half wants to go home and see our loved ones, but only if someone’s remembered to turn up Melbourne’s thermostat. Issy wants to sit on a rug in a green park. We haven’t got a rug so we settle for a thin towel and head off for the National Garden which is a couple of kilometres north of the hotel, on the edge of the CBD. We think there may well be more stray cats here in Athens than people (ordinary people not stray people) and we come across yet another flock/herd/group next to a church at the south end of the Garden. We see a ... read more

Issy passed on yesterday’s tour of the Acropolis, which was understandable given it involved a lot of walking in the heat. I know she’s not into temples but I’m still determined that we not leave Athens without her seeing its biggest attraction. I thought we got here early but there’s still a long queue for tickets. We make our way up the lower slopes past the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Next stop is the human traffic jam that’s the narrow main entrance to the top. I didn’t think it was possible to get more crowded than it was yesterday, but I think it just might be. Issy didn’t seem too keen on coming here when we started our climb, and this pile up of humanity’s turned her right off. We make ... read more

This morning we’ve booked a ”mythological” tour of Athens’ highlights. I’m not sure exactly what this means, but Issy’s sensing a lot of ancient temples so elects to stay in bed. I’m a bit surprised she’s let me venture out on my own. She said last night that I shouldn’t go out after dark by myself given that we seem to be staying in the middle of the red light district. I wasn’t quite sure whether that was because she thought I might get mugged or because she was afraid I might “accidentally” get lured into one of the strip clubs. Anyway most of them seem to be closed at 8am this morning, not of course that I was taking all that much notice…… Our guide introduces himself as Evan. He says that this is short ... read more

Most of us who are foodies know these things. But Food Travelist has listed them, just in case you did not get the memo. Who sent the memo? The ghost of Tony Bourdain, or Julia Child? Mr. Bizarre Foods, Andrew Zimmern? Beat Bobby Flay? Look for the lines Yes, the longest line usually means the best food. Or get there earlier tomorrow? Ask waiters and cabbies Just beware, they could be on the "payroll" of a restaurant. I always talk to the hotel people, and I shall reveal a secret, which you may find rather sensitive. I always ask a person of color for a local spot. Go for lunch Generally, it is cheaper than dinner. And the portions are more manageable. Lunch may also offer a "fixed price" menu as well. We’re very sad to be leaving our paradise here on the beach in Naxos, but it’s time to move on. Today we fly to Athens, so it’s an early start. We’re sitting in the very front row of our propeller plane, so we get a close up view of the “Location of Emergency Equipment” plate on the wall right in front of us. And interesting reading it is too. It includes the location of the “Bomb Search Checklist”. I’m not sure whether this would be a list of places on the plane to check for bombs, or what to do if you find one. I suppose it’s good that they have this but I would have thought it might have been better to make really sure that there wasn’t a bomb on the plane in the ... read more

We’re up at the crack of dawn. Today we’ve got a long day of travelling, first from Gozo via the ferry back to Malta, and from there to Rome and then Athens where we’ll be spending the night at the airport. It’s been ridiculously hot here the last few days and this morning feels as oppressive as ever. We put our bathers and towels out on the balcony to dry when we got back from the beach yesterday. I’m not sure why we bothered; it’s so humid that they‘re still soaked this morning. It was almost impossible to cool down at the beach yesterday. It was only just cool enough to be refreshing in the water, and the sand was so hot that we had to sprint back to the shade of our umbrellas to stop ... read more

And so begins the long journey home…our last day on the islands before we headed to Athens. Unfortunately the weather gods didn’t quite get the memo that we would like the cooling breezes to continue. Our day started with a quick morning tea and coffee before we offloaded our bags. A bit of retail therapy and some strolling in the town (and ice cream) before a long lazy gyros lunch and a randomly illogical bus trip to the airport. There began a Masterclass in chaos and inefficiency before we were loaded onto the plane and headed for Athens. Some excellent cookies mildly softened the blow. Easy transfer to our apartment, right in the middle of retail paradise before we dumped our things and headed to the authentically named Zorbas for dinner. A nice relaxed start to ... read more

We made it! It has been way too long since I've been able to hop the pond and see some international sites, so I am very happy to be visiting Greece with my cousin Christina. We will be sticking primarily to the interior and Athens on this week-long trip and I'll post pics as I can. For our first day off the plan we got into our hotel after a long ride from the airport. Because I couldn't travel for so long we splurged on a taxi vs using the local bus and I'm glad we did as we got to the see the city, the olive trees, and a bit of how traffic works here (it isn't too terrible, really). We are jet lagged for sure, but got out for a long walk, some dinner, ... read more
