Strikes, protests and demonstrations occur regularly, including at tourist sites such as Syntagma Square in central Athens. Public transport is often disrupted, and the protests can turn violent without warning. Avoid locations where protests are happening, monitor media and follow the advice of local authorities. Syntagma is a major transfer point for the Athens Metro. It is also home to many restaurants, shops, and the famous Varvakios Market, where restaurants and residents buy fresh fish, meat, produce, and spices. It is a favorite area of Athens for almost everyone! More detail: Strikes, protests and demonstrations take place regularly and can turn violent. Rioting can break out with little warning.

Öğleden sonra umumi ... read more

A rigorous new study that examined the health effects of coffee consumption found good news and bad news for coffee lovers. The research showed that coffee has striking effects on physical activity levels, causing people to move more, taking, on average, 1,000 extra steps a day — a significant boost in activity that might help explain why coffee consumption has long been linked to better health. But the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, did find some downsides to a daily cuppa. It showed that people lost about 36 minutes of nightly sleep on days when they drank coffee — and the more coffee they drank, the less they slept. The research also looked at coffee’s effect on heart palpitations, a relatively common experience for healthy coffee drinkers. The study found that in ... read more

This map makes me feel like I am a real traveler, and that the world is so small. Yet, I have places to go and people to see. And I need to revisit a few, like Helsinki, Reykjavik, and Budapest. My trip in May might be my last to Europe (I keep saying this). I need to refocus on SE Asia, Japan, and South America. Along with a return to Athens to see my Greek brothers, I may also head north to Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, or south to Crete, then up to Slovenia, and the capital city of Ljubljana. After that, maybe Estonia, Slovakia, or Albania. Or maybe all three? I also want to see some of my European friends again, in France, as well as Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, and England. And don't forget Barry ... read more

From Dianne de Guzman of SF Gate: I understand that there can be a weird stigma around eating alone, but that is mostly in one’s head. What dining alone affords you — as I’ve found out over years of being seated solo at tables and bars — is chance. And there’s a lot I mean by that word, “chance.” It could mean an opportunity to meet a person next to you. To linger longer with a bartender and ask questions about the big and small things in drinking (and life). It could also mean just taking a chance to listen, whether that be to your own thoughts or to just bask in the bustle of the city. From my days of business travel, dining alone never bothered me. But wearing a suit while dining versus wearing ... read more

More travelers are expected to go solo in 2023. url=https://www.ohio.edu/goglobal/3-benefits-solo-travel#:~:text=Solo%20traveling%20will%20help%20you%20reconnect%20with%20yourself%20and%20find%20your%20purpose.&text=It%20is%20more%20difficult%20to,other%20people's%20schedules%20and%20timing.According to Ohio University's Office of Global Opportunities, solo travel has unique benefits, such as not having to plan around anyone else's schedule, meeting new people, and growing outside of your comfort zone. According to an August 2022 report from WTM Global Hub, Google searches for solo travel have quadrupled since 2020. Solo travel was already on the rise in 2022, according to Travel Pulse, and... read more

Tourist time for its up for breakfast by 7 o’clock, out the door by 7:40 and up the Dionysius Gate (because the majority of tourists use the main or northern gate) by opening time. No queue at all and no discount for 65 plus year olds since Britain left the EU (I can pretend to be British I can’t pretend to be French, Portuguese or really any other EU nation) so the Greek Government has my €20. You can pay to skip the queues and in peak time or peak season it may be worth it but our walking guide mentioned that now it’s not worth it. The Acropolis is wonderful but the Parthenon and a couple of accompanying buildings (the Theatre of Dionysius, The Temple of Nike and the Caryatids on the Erecteion (oops I ... read more
