Greet from Greece. In fact from the base of the Acropolis, near the Plaza, between the 2 main squares and near the old Roman Agora. The location is ideal for any activity in central Athens although our hotel which was terrific last year is showing signs of its age. Admittedly our room is smaller and lacks the balcony I had last year so it’s decreased in size but the prices has inversely risen. We paid more for a small bottle of sparkling water than I did for a souvlaki on the streets! And the souvlaki was good. The same bottle of water is less than one fifth the price at the supermarket 3 doors away! But… The view from the rooftop garden here is probably worth the inflated drink prices. There’s not a bad view of ... read more

Looks good, is good. No it is not the punch line from some rude joke, well really it is but I’m not using it in that manner. The Acropolis and Parthenon look good and are good from any and all perspectives. We, and a few hundred of our friends, ventured up to the Acropolis and Parthenon and happily took photos of this unique historical and cultural monument. We went at a time with supposedly few others yet it was still a busy place. Using the Western Gate helps as the throng of people use the main, more easily accessed gate. It is a great place to visit, you don’t spend ages there but it is interesting at every turn. There’s a beauty is the symmetry and geometry of the buildings. I read about the golden ratios ... read more

I woke up well rested after my big sleep. Elly and I went to a fruit vendor and the grocery store, and then headed out of town to see the Sanctuary of Poseidon. Elly sat and had a coffee while I went up to the ruins. So incredible what was accomplished about 2500 years ago! The ruins are on the hilltop surrounded by the sea. It was nice and breezy, so even though the temperature was about 35C, it felt fine. When I got back to meet up with Elly, she said she was interested in doing a trip somewhere in Europe. She's a university professor and is off til mid-Sept, so yesterday I had said that if she was interested in traveling anywhere with me, I didn't have any set ideas after I go to ... read more

Today we’ve got a long and convoluted day of travelling from Monopoli to Athens … via Rome. So that would be five hours on a train going 500 or so kilometres in the wrong direction, followed by six quality hours waiting in an airport, followed by a plane flight. And after half an hour of that flight we’ll be back over Monopoli again. So after eleven and a half hours of tiring travelling we will have made zero nett progress. Zero. I call that cruel. It’s an early start, and too early it seems for Monopoli’s taxi drivers. They’d apparently be more than happy to take our money if we were going far enough to make it worth their while, but for the sake of the couple of kilometres to the station it seems they’d all ... read more

From Cheapism: Air travel used to be glamorous. Back in the 1930s, you’d board a flight in your finest suit, stretch your legs, and enjoy a seven-course meal on fine china. Today, you’re lucky if you can get a bag of pretzels. Of course, the trade-off is that flights are far cheaper than they were in the glory days of air travel. But still, some of today's carriers are so inhospitable that they make Southwest look like a luxury airline. That’s especially true for this list of seven stinkers, which made url=https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/14visbg/what_is_the_worst_airline_you_have_flown_with/Redditors’ list of the “worst airlines.” Air Canada Canadians say it sucks, but I have flown them several times, including a biz class from Toronto to Santiago, Chile. It was more than acceptable, the flight staff was great, and the food was more than passable. ... read more

Pretty uneventful day today, which was a nice change of pace from yesterday..! I still don't feel amazing, but at least no more concussion symptom flareups. I took the early ferry out of Kyllini (thankfully no creeper this time!) and started making my way back towards Athens to drop off my car. 130km/hr, let's goooooo haha. I stopped at the Rio Fortress, just outside of Patras. Easy parking, short little visit. Within the fortress you get a great view of the Rio bridge looming in the back. The fortress is mostly blocked off though - idk if it's normally like that or just because of construction..? Signs were in Greek so idk lol. But I did find one staircase that wasn't blocked off so I could go up on to the wall and one of the ... read more

The Temple of Poseidon was constructed between 444 and 440 BC, with 38 columns that rose 20 feet into the air. It once housed a 20 feet tall bronze statue of Poseidon in the hall of worship. It is located at Cape Sounion at the southern tip of mainland Greece. The first version of the temple was constructed in the archaic period. However, it was destroyed in 480 BC by the Persians during the Greco-Persian Wars. Pericles rebuilt the temple around 440 BC, although only 16 of the original 38 columns remain standing today. According to Greek mythology, Poseidon’s power is second to only Zeus. As the god of the sea, the mariners and fishermen of ancient Greece prayed to Poseidon to keep them safe from storms and shipwrecks and often left animal sacrifices and other ... read more

I have done quite a lot of travelling, and quite a lot of backpacking (especially around Europe) but never have I been able to say I have gone backpacking around Europe with my daughter ... until now! Jacqueline had been working near Valencia, Spain since October as an English language TA. Her contract ended on May 31 and she met me here in Athens a few days ago for the start of an awesome trip. Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, having been continuously inhabited for over 3000 years (likely longer than 5000 years). Athens cultural achievements during the 5th century BC laid the foundations of Western civilization. According to Greek mythology, Athens was named after the goddess Athena who won a contest with Poseidon god of the sea. The prize would ... read more

Now, on my fourth trip to Greece, and Athens, I should tell you something about feta. You may be surprised by some of this information, as I was. The ubiquitous Greek salad always contains feta, either crumbled, in chunks, or in a large block. Needless to say, I almost always order a Greek salad at dinner, or maybe have the Greek salad for lunch by itself. From Culinary Backstreets: Feta must be one of the world’s oldest cheeses, it’s certainly one of the most famous, and it’s practically never missing from a Greek table, no matter the time of day. A person might grab a chunk of this chalk-white substance for breakfast, crunch through layers of feta-stuffed phyllo for elevenses, put a slab of it on her village salad for lunch, have it for supper along ... read more
