Today, our leaving day. It seems impossible that our trip is done and we are now packing to go home. At this point we're quite efficient in our morning packing for day trips, but somehow, planning for the trip home seems inefficient to our travels! There is so much world to explore, it would be a wonderful life to wander and discover! Alas, it is time to go home and share all our stories and experiences with our friends and family...not such a bad deal!! Some final reflections on our journey: Anywhere you go, there will be people who are determined to bask in their own negativity and remain in a self serving bubble. But there will also always be the people who make traveling -and life in general- such a wonderful endeavour. People whose hearts ... read more

Well Kathy and I arrived safely after a very long flight from Melbourne. 14 hours to Dubai... they were the most uncomfortable of my life. But we are here! Just waiting for the Ferry for Syros to leave, we will arrive at 10.30pm tonight. I will post photos later. Lots of people have come up to me on the ferry wanting to know how I have internet access for my laptop... one lady even wanted me to confirm her flight booking! I turned on the computer more because after three hours of waiting I am very bored and also to check to see if the wireless broadband works. Ferry doors are now closing. Amy... read more

Please note: you do not have to read all of this blog. I am also writing it as a memory jogger for Steve and I when we return to reality in Australia! After almost 14 hours on a plane, we touched down in Athens on time at 2pm, tired but excited. It was a balmy 14 degress and lightly raining. Going through customs could not have been easier. We were met by Dimitrios, from Athens Taxi. He was a very nice chap, who like many Grecians, liked to talk with his hands, sometimes while driving! We felt very safe with him though. He pointed out the Parthenon that we could see from the freeway. It was amazing to think that we were finally here. I'll admit that it still feels quite surreal. Smoking advertisements abound in ... read more

Saturday, 10th January, 2009, continued. We left the cabin just before nine and wandered down to the Restaurant, the ship sailed at about this time. We had the following, a four colour salad as a starter, which was carrot, white and red cabbage, and lettuce. Then a special of the day, swordfish steak, and a pork fillet. Pat's meal arrived with brussel sprouts, much to her displeasure, she dislikes them with a passion. I ate them and they were lovely. The plates were cleared and we were given a complimentary dessert, which was made from honey, and the waiter said it was called something like klevida (?). Also some Raki, which I declined. Then we decided to share a dessert and had like a tort on a sponge base, sprinkled with nuts . This was also ... read more

Wednesday continued We updated the blog, with a few recent pictures and surfed for any information about the port of Piraeus, but couldn't find anything. We went to the self-service restaurant for dinner at about eight thirty. A meat kebab and pork steak with a salad and drinks, total €35.50. Announcements were made during dinner to say that the weather was still bad and the authorities would not allow the ship to sail? The on board shops were now open so we took a look at them and then returned to the cabin. Thursday, 4th December, 2008 We awoke after a reasonable nights sleep, to find ourselves in Sunny Pireaus. Not where we would have hoped, but it doesn't really matter. There are announcements in Greek now and again, but no translation. There is a translation ... read more

Thursday continued We decided to hang out in the lounges, rather than the cabin, and went and had some coffee and some chocolate croissants. After a particularly long announcement, Pat went to reception and they infomed her that, it was now confirmed that the ship would sail today at 2100 hours. At least we had a better idea of what was going on. A short while later. I went down and asked what was the situation regarding the cabin and going ashore. The cabin seems to be ours until Crete and we can go ashore as long as we show our tickets at ship security. We decided to go for a walk, see what was going on with the blockade and do some general exploring, We left the ship about eleven forty five, nobody checked us ... read more

Tuesday, 2nd December, 2008 We got into town about eleven o'clock and parked by the Lixouri ferry terminal. We found a computer shop and bought a new mouse. We then bought some CRV3 batteries from a photo shop. Pat found the Body Shop and replenished some make up. We then went off to the Metropolis for coffee and internet. Our English lady wasn't working today. We updated the blog, checked on emails and then surfed for Greek ferry information and timetables. There doesn't seem to be any ferries from Patras to Crete. So it is back to plan A. Trying to find information on times is like looking for the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, very elusive. The sites we had found to look up information, didn't provide any. Even going to ... read more

We reached port in Piraeus, Greece around 1 pm then drove to Athens. Athens is a beautiful city with lots of history but it is very smoggy and dirty. Driving here is a lot of fun if you like dodging cars, motorcycles and pedestrians that come at you from every direction. We can’t read the traffic signs but not to worry, no one seems to obey them anyway. We were lucky and found a spot for the car and a hotel with in walking distance to all the ruins. FYI- Al’s bag is STILL lost. ... read more
