Off to Mykonos and we are both very excited, we found the ferry no problem and it was very well organised, you took your luggage to the guy loading it and he stuffed it onto a pallet, Pam’s went into a special box as she told him it was fragile. Following the stream of other passengers we headed to the upper deck and found a table by the window to base ourselves from, being a 6 hour trip we wanted a good seat. The vibe on the boat was just great with everyone off to one or other of the islands, our trip takes in Syros first, then Tinos and finally Mykonos. It was mayhem at the stops as the ferry which I must mention is huge, 4 passenger levels, at least two car and freight ... read more

The hire car has clearly had enough of us and on the steep climb out of Porto Germeno it refused to get out of second gear. This, along with the fact that I seemed to have accidentally ticked the "use narrow potholed roads where often bits are missing" button on the sat nav made for an interesting first half hour. The roads were pretty much deserted until suddenly, just a few miles from Athens the traffic built to terrifying proportions again. We managed to return our hire car (why do these things take so long?) Piraeus was as chaotic as last Thursday. We had about 4 hours before our ferry sailed and so killed time in the shelters on the port. These are used by vagrants to sleep, drink, shout and fall over. What with this ... read more

Monday May 6th, 2013. Piraeus, Attica, Greece The Greek people have always been connected with the sea ever since they first occupied the land they called Hellas. The geography dictates the indelible land-marine link. Mainland Greece, comprised of the Southern Balkan Peninsula and the Peloponnese is the centre of the Greek nation. All Western nations can trace some of their cultural heritage back to ancient Greece and the Hellenic influence has touched nearly every human society on earth. The port of Piraeus was once an island and has served as the main Greek harbour since at least 500 BC. Cargo, commercial and passenger vessels from around the globe share the docks. Pireus is Greece's third most populous city. The protective 'Long Wall' which guarded the route between the port and Athens was begun in 478 BC. ... read more

It's 700 nautical miles from Odessa to Piraeus so another day at sea. Time to catch up on a day of lounging around on a sunbed on deck 12. In our dreams…!!! We left Odessa in the high 70s (25C), Piraeus is said to be in the mid 80s (28C). What greeted us on the sea day wasn't the expected 'Sammy Sunshine'. It was more like Phileas Fogg-horn'!! The morning started off very misty and the temperature had dropped considerably. I was beginning to think I was back home with not two consecutive days being the same!! The sun did make a brief appearance on deck and so did Roisin but for most of the day, it was spent indoors. Our route took us from the Black Sea, following the coast of Romania and Bulgaria, until ... read more

Not much to report today. Left Kalambaka on the 10 o'clock bus and traveled the 5 1/2 hours back down to Athens. Beautiful drive, all-in-all, finally making it down to Piraeus, where I'm spending the night, at about 4ish. Piraeus is the port of Athens, and is actually the busiest port in the entire Mediterranean. While it's a bit sketchy down by the docks, once you head inland 5 or so blocks it's a pretty nice place to spend the evening. Even stumbled upon a Starbucks. It's funny, the small things you miss when you're out more in the countryside. Mainly, everywhere I've been, Starbucks has been my go-to place. It's quiet, it's always air-conditioned, it has free wifi, and is truly a nice couple hour escape when being in a strange place gets a little ... read more

Friday 15 June, 2012 Cruise Day What a fabulous breakfast this hotel supplied. The best so far on my journey; eggs, bacon, mushrooms, sausages, fresh fruit, cereal, toast, coffee etc., along with a what must be a usual Greek breakfast; olives, tomato, cheese. The hotel supplied me with a free transfer to the ship. They drove right up to the check-in desk… what service! All aboard The ship is quite small compared to some others in port. The port of Pireaus is an unbelievably busy port and tourism in Greece must be a very big industry. When I booked, I chose the lowest fare which placed me in an inside cabin on level 2 - the first deck under the water line. I unpacked straight away and went off to explore the ship. I have included ... read more

John arranged a taxi to pick us up from the house at 3:30 which gave us plenty of time to get to the Port of Piraeaus. The taxi was early and was the best taxi we used during our time in Athens and we arrived at the port about 3:45 and went through a customs check in and boarded Sea Cloud. There was a procedure for checking us in involving photo IDs and the taking of our passports; we were escorted on board by our own man to our room, 301 and shown all of the facilities and told that at promptly 5:00 there would be a mandatory safety instruction class. Ken and Bobbi found us and we compared cabins and then attended the class which was helpful. Dinner was very nice and we sat with ... read more

The day you arrive on a ship is one of the most exciting days of the cruise. The anticipation is great: what will our cabin look like; who will we meet; what exciting things will we be doing. After cruising as often as we have, sometime expectations are greater than reality. Today was not one of those times. This ship exceeded our expectations! Checking in was a breeze - maybe because of the relatively small number of passengers on this ship. Pacific Princess is one of Princess Cruise Lines "small ships" - purchased when Renaissance Cruise Lines folded. The ship holds only 670 passengers (maximum) but it is simple beautiful. Our cabin is large by cruise standards and the decor is both comfortable and classy. I had read on Trip Advisor that the food on this ... read more

OUR BIG FAT GREEK VACATION It had come time for Dawn’s kids to come home from staying with their father in Greece for the summer. After putting it off last summer, we committed to going to Greece to pick them up this time. The journey started with booking our flight. We weren’t going to need a hotel since Dawn has friends and family there. We stopped by the travel agent only to learn that you had to have your passports with you to book international flights. Dawn was waiting for hers to be renewed which she did receive about two weeks later. So we went back to the travel agent. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the service and the prices so we decided to book it ourselves through Continental’s web site. We had to stick with ... read more
