I just finnished writting an amazing bolg and it all dissapeared on me. I am going to try again but i don't have much time to do it as well. Things I forgot about Rome. We saw this really cute cat shelter located in a square of ruins. They take in all of the stray cats and fix, vaccinate and feed them. then they let them wane\der about the ruins. It's really cool. We got one hour of sleep our last night in Rome because we had to tke the late bus back to the camp site. We waited for the bus from 11pm until 1am along with tons of people that had just gotten out of a fee concert. There were more people squeesed into that bus than I ever thought possible. We then had ... read more

Yey, for Easyjet and cheap flights!! Lisa and I flew to Athens and then took a boat to Hydra, an island where there are no cars, only donkeys! We spent the day here before getting another boat to the beautiful town of Napflion which has an incredible Venetian feel. After a few days here we moved on to Delphi before going back to Athens. There was a very strange festival on in the city at the time which involved everyone hitting each other with plastic clubs and spraying foam on each other!... read more

Maybe my expectations were too high, Athens being the first place I visited outside of the U.S. and Canada. Or maybe it was the jet lag or trying and failing to drink myself to sleep, giddy with the prospect of free whiskey on the ten hour overnight flight. The first traveler I met was outside the hostel and he humbled me, as he waited for his taxi to the airport to fly back to Australia after nearly two years of travel. There were stray dogs at the Acropolis and the sun was inescapable, baking the ruins. I was cheap back then too, so I chose not to pay for a guide and instead wandered around trying to remember what I learned in Art History courses and feeling guilty that I wasn't enjoying it more. From the ... read more

Day 28 - Friday 10th March The choice for breakfast included eggs, which made a nice change. We had decided to fly to Istanbul and so the first task of the day was to head into the centre and buy the tickets - £6.60 with Turkish Airlines and due to leave at 1.30pm. Unfortunately there was not enough time to do anymore serious sightseeing. We were given a pretty thorough search by staff at the airport and then we told that the flight would be late due to adverse weather conditions in Istanbul. Now if you have never flown before, this is a very strange experience - the extreme acceleration, take off and then nearly always the plane turns on its side and heads off in a different direction - mentally you are wondering how much ... read more

Day 27 - Thursday 9th March We decided to change Youth Hostels and move to Athens No 3 which was considerably cleaner - unfortuantely it did mean that we had less time for sightseeing. After the mandatory trip to Poste Restante, the first tourist area was the flea market, which was full of cheap junk shops with nothing worth buying - moved on quickly. Theseum - the Temple of Hephaestus the God of Fire and Blacksmiths. However there were more attractive ruins on the site Agora including where St Paul had preached a famous sermon about the Unknown God. A lot of the excavations had commenced post war. Next stop was the Acropolis which was free to enter. The temples, the pillars and other monuments were just amazing with their beauty further enhanced by the bright ... read more

1964 Diary Entry "The next morning I got up and Dad and I went down to have a swim. It was beautiful in and I swam out to the little platform in the middle of the place reserved for our hotel. After I came back we went up to our room for breakfast. After breakfast we started to pack for that day we were leaving for Athens. After we had packed there was still some time left so I had my final swim. After that we took a taxi to the airport. There we had our baggage checked and then we received a stamp for leaving the country. Then we waited for about 1/4 of an hour. After that we boarded the plane and prepared for take-off. After ten minutes we took off. Then about half ... read more
