From Cheapism: Air travel used to be glamorous. Back in the 1930s, you’d board a flight in your finest suit, stretch your legs, and enjoy a seven-course meal on fine china. Today, you’re lucky if you can get a bag of pretzels. Of course, the trade-off is that flights are far cheaper than they were in the glory days of air travel. But still, some of today's carriers are so inhospitable that they make Southwest look like a luxury airline. That’s especially true for this list of seven stinkers, which made url=https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/14visbg/what_is_the_worst_airline_you_have_flown_with/Redditors’ list of the “worst airlines.” Air Canada Canadians say it sucks, but I have flown them several times, including a biz class from Toronto to Santiago, Chile. It was more than acceptable, the flight staff was great, and the food was more than passable. ... read more

M - Our original plan was to work our way north from Istanbul through Bulgaria, Romania to northern/western europe but: i) the weather further north wasn't looking quite as warm as we had expected and ii) we felt we may not fully appreciate a series of back-to back capital city stops (and frankly we figured we could do that later in life). Hence a change of plans. Head south to Athens (admitedly a capital city) to see the Acropolis (we have always wanted to see it) and then take a less direct route back to France, perhaps even continuing south to do some greek island hoping? Hostel world did us proud again in Athens. A double room within a short walk of the key sites with en suite, a balcony and a view of the Acropolis ... read more

Probably today's not the best time to visit Greece and Athens, but when we got there in August 2010, things were a little bit better (at least they didn't had yet to be rescued by the IMF)... I must confess I was expecting a much more antique and preserved city and ruins, but what can you do against the expantion and growth of cities? In Athens you can visit all the famous (and not so famous if you're not a Greek Mithology lover, like I am) monuments and pieces of art... You buy a single ticket with multiple tear parts and you get to visit almost all the attractions that are paid individually - it costed me 12eur, last summer. You get to see the temple of Athena (the Parthenon) - one important advise: take as ... read more

Day 3 Today our plan is to watch the ceremony of the changing of the guard in front of the Athens Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The changing of the guard happens every hour however, on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. they have a large processional including the military band. After breakfast we take the hotel shuttle downtown once again. Today it is already very warm by 10:30 a.m. and feels very muggy. The shuttle drops us off two blocks from the parliament. Across the street from the parliament we pass a park filled with tents and protest signs. We, of course, do not know what they are protesting because all of the signs are in Greek. All the tents remind me of something you might see in the river bottom of Ventura or ... read more

Day 2 Rise and shine! Our body clocks are officially off with the time change. At 4:30 a.m. our eyes pop open thinking that is should be 2 p.m. We watch t.v. until 6 a.m. when the executive lounge opens for coffee and breakfast. The food here is proving to be very good. After breakfast we take showers and ready ourselves for the day. The guide books recommend getting an early start to avoid the crowds. Our plan is to head to the Acropolis on the top of the hill. Getting an early start will also prevent hiking up the hill in the 80 degree mid-afternoon heat. We take the hotel shuttle to downtown and get dropped off a few blocks away for the Acropolis. At the base of the Acropolis we purchase our entry ticket ... read more

When we stepped off the ferry from Mykonos, a strange feeling hit us both. This was the final stage of our epic adventure. With 16 checklists on our itinerary, number seventeen was the grand finale. Though definitely not the highlight city of our trip, it was a perfect ending to such a grand journey. For better or worse, the attractions in Athens are dominated by the Acropolis (with very little else to see). We had plenty of time to wander through the city, reflect on our months on the road, and soak in the waning moments of life away from home. Our ferry landed in Athens at 11:55 pm. A crazy, mad dash to the metro allowed us a cheap and easy ride to our hostel. The metro ride to the hostel took about forty minutes ... read more

Having been to Athens some years ago, we knew what to expect, and so it was quite nice to be there again and go to the places we didnt get time for previously. We arrived at Rafina port from Andros and took the bus to Athens. Wouldnt you think they would drop you off fairly central? No, we had a long walk and search to find the area we wanted to base in. It was about 5 o'clock in the evening, and we walked through Ormonia, a region to avoid at night, but fine during the daytime, to the Plaka. Last time we were here, we didnt get chance to explore this area because we were on a tour. We found it, and started to try to find a room for the next two nights. I ... read more
