Mat: Dave my little brother (well no so little, medium maybe, and quite hairy) was travelling to Germany at the start of June to play music at a festival in Braunschweig. Braunschweig is about two hours west of Berlin, so Trace and I organised to meet him in Berlin, and then go for a wander through Poland, Austria, Slovenia, and Hungary. Good times. For today's instalment however, it is all about Berlin. Berlin is cool. We arrived to a sun-drenched city that was topping 30 degrees. Considering we had been excited by a 20 degree day in Scotland before we left, this did our heads in a little. It was pretty much like this for most of our three week trip, and even hit 33 degrees in Slovenia. Suncream, swimming, sunglasses, singlets, shorts, jandals, sweat, cool ... read more

Wow, what a day... Had a good start this morning in Elk Grove. Got out of the house pretty much on time, and as of now we only know of a couple things we missed - nothing major. We picked up Tyler, and were off to the Bay Area. I think we discoverd the capacity limit on the Tahoe (2 Adults, 2 teenagers, 4 large pieces of luggage, and one dog). After dropping of Sage at Mom & Dad's, and picking up Dad to shuffle the car back from SFO, we were off to the airport. We got to the arrival drop off a little after 11:00am, and had our luggage checked, and were through security within 20 minutes (I swear it's more difficult to fly to Fresno than it is Internationally. Dumbfounded, we headed to ... read more

Stuggled a bit getting up and so missed getting on the earliest cruise on the Rhine. I was planning on getting the earliest one, getting off at St Goar to check out the Rheinfels castle, then getting on a later one to continue onto Koblenz. So I jumped on a train to St Goar, which luckily for me was also packed with bloody Year 2 or 3 schoolkids. Grrrrr. Off at St Goar, no lockers at the station but the nice ladies at the tourist info will let you stash your stuff there. Walked around the little town a bit then headed up the hill to the ruins on the Burg Rhienfels, back in its day the best castle on the Rhine and the one only one on the French side of the Rhine to hold ... read more

June 11, 2008 Dusseldorf, Germany Nice city !!! We travelled a few hours today through some more great countryside and arrived in Dusseldorf in time to spend the afternoon and evening exploring this great city. Dusseldorf is a lot different from Berlin. Very clean, a lot of the “old character” that we enjoy and a very beautiful location on the Rhine River. Dusseldorf is a favorite place to visit due to it's location on the Rhine and many river cruises come here as well as day trips from coastal ports. In hindsight we wish we had another day here but we are committed to go to Brussels tomorrow. There is some interesting castle hunting here as well. Yup !!! More castles. We'll be Back !! The terrain changes significantly as you travel through Germany and we ... read more

Back on the party bus and we head north from Switzerland to the Wine Valley of St Goar in Germany. 21/5/08 - Lauterbrunnen to St Goar Today was a big day on the coach. I had a 6am wake up for my last morning of cookies/dishies, and it was an 8am departure from the picturesque Lauterbrunnen back into Deutschland. We had a 3hr drive to an Autogrill, back into Germany where the Burger King burgers are the size of an average football field. We hit the road for another 2 hours and arrived at a pleasant little German town called Heidelberg. Heidelberg is known as the German University Town and 1 in 5 residents are students. The town was really quiet and it's alleyways full of cafes, souvenir shops and markets of all sorts. In the ... read more

Tuesday 3rd June - Friday 6th June We arrived in Frankfurt around midday and headed to our hotel. The plane had been delayed by six hours so it meant we were arriving at a more civilised time as opposed to 6am that we were meant too. After negotiating public transport again (tricky when its in German and your tired from the flight) we found our hotel. It also had a shared bathroom (a pain) and our room was right at the top of a three story stair climb. We then had a look around Frankfurt. There didn’t seem that much to see so we walked around and checked out the scenery. I found a street café which was good place to have a couple of German beers and watch the world go by. Our sleep that ... read more

Day 2 in Berlin. Tody we had our first breakfast at our European hotel. It consisted of bread, meats, cheeses, and even soft boiled eggs. a few of them learned how to crack the top off the soft boiled egg and scoop it out. After breakfast we headed off for our sightseeing tour. Our local guide was a guy called Kevin Kennedy and some of the kids found him a bit boreing, but he was very informative and I did not find him so bad. Our tour was mostly driving around in the bus seeing all of the major sights. We stopped at a few places such as the big concert hall, but it was mostly just going buy places and pointing out interesting events or things that have happened at certain places. From the obvious ... read more

We´re in Mannheim! Yay us. We´ve invented a new expression - bug-eyed, meaning I have yet another bug in my eye, we´ve carried our bikes across snow drifts, been caught in a hailstorm, Christie has bug bites from her head to her toes and we´re loving it! To try and bring you up to speed, after a good-damn awful night in Milano where we literally had a highway directly outside our window and a Scottish grid iron team on the floor above us having an all nigth party (and I can attest to this as I went upstairs at 2am and told them to shut up) we set off for Lecco. We left Milan along the canal paths, but only managed to escape thanks to the kindness of an old cyclist who lead us many kilometers ... read more

Train to Frankfurt required several changes but I finally got there. Handy that the ticket terminals at the station let you print out the train timetable. Found my hostel was in the middle of the red light district, got hassled by spruikers at 3pm lol. But there was two reasons I stopped at Frankfurt. One was to catch the boat the next morning foir a cruise up the Rhine to Koblenz, but the main one was to go and try one of those famous, oversized schnitzels and oversized beers at Waldgeist restaurant, at Hofheim on the outskirts of Frankfurt. Took the train out there and then walked, was a bit further than I thought, about 5kms. Sat outside in the beer garden where they had a big TV set up for the soccer like everywhere does ... read more

June 10, 2008 June 10, 2008 Potsdan / Hannover, Germany A short drive today from Berlin to Hannover via Potsdam and Brandenburg. More nice country and gets more interesting the closer you get to Potsdam. The Potsdam, Brandenburg area is very beautiful with forest and lakes and a lot of 4 - 5 star resorts to service the many tourists. Most come to see the many castles and palaces that were built here over a few hundred years. The lakes and canals make for a very nice setting. We spent some time checking out the main castle area with the old and new palaces of the last reigning Prussians. The new palace is very large but we didn't tour the inside of this one. The busiest tour is of the Old Palace of Frederick The Great ... read more
