We were so fortunate to arrive in Cologne this morning on a beautiful sunny day! The ship docked across the river from the city center - with 2 other Viking Longships! And there were 3 other Viking Longships on the other side of the river. These ships are coming and going in opposite directions from Amsterdam, Budapest and Basel. And we understand that they are all FULL! Viking seems to be doing just fine.
But that didn't present any problem getting to the action. Viking shuttled us and our guide on a short trip to the city center - one block from the Cathedral of Cologne. And oh what a place that is! Construction started in 1248 and was completed in 1880. Talk about a blown production schedule! But what a magnificent job they did. It was originally constructed to house the bones of the three wise men. We don't know what happened to those bones during that long construction period, but the end product is beautiful!
Our wonderful (and totally hilarious) guide, Ulli, took us to many cool places in Cologne and shared lots of interesting serious and fun facts about the city. She also gave us lots of funny facts about life in Cologne. They brought us back to the ship for lunch then I returned to the city center later to visit the cathedral. Surely the presence of the Lord was in that place. Beautiful! I can highly recommend a trip to Cologne if you're in this area!
