Kiel is an old ship building city that was bombed repeatedly in WWII as a consequence. The Kiel canal is a short cut from the North Sea to the Baltic. It is now used by some cruise ships as a convenient port of call.... read more

G.. and M.. organized a neighbourhood dinner party with a Sri Lankan food theme. N.. was only too happy to help out with some cooking while E.. went shopping with M.. for supplies. W.. and the girls had a good time in the back yard playing badminton, climbing, running and jumping. Not knowing German didn't stop W.. from getting to know and play with the neighbourhood kids. It probably helped that most of the kids, except for J.. and one friend, were younger than him. The party went well in spite of rain every now and then. The sun came out when it was needed, and the rain came down before we started and around when we were finishing. The kids didn't seem to mind or notice any of the rain. They just kept playing.... read more

After the day trip to Legoland, we returned from Copenhagen to Kiel by train. Once again the train went on board the ferry while crossing onto Puttgarden, and it's still an amazing thing to see a train on board a ferry. The weather the last few weeks has been mostly rainy, with an occasional hint of a sunny day. Maybe Denmark is known for its inclement weather, but from Paris onwards,we've been encountering more cloudy and rainy days than sunny hot days. But, according to the forecast, that's about to change. From Sunday onwards, it's likely to be sunny in Northern Germany and Poland is quite hot right now. The overcast days are good travel days, but not good beach days. ... read more

The Waden sea is an area of the North sea with huge tidal zones. You can walk out quite far during low tide. We drove West from Kiel to the North Sea in time for low tide. We'd planned on a low tide hike with a ranger. But it was rainy and there was no ranger. We drove onto St. Peters and Odingburg where it got sunny and beautiful.... read more

Spent the day with M.. and the girls on a beach slightly West of Kiel. Ate lunch at Bruno's beach baskets. The beaches in Northern Germany can get very windy. The German solution is to provide beach baskets that you can sit in. These also provide some privacy and protection from the sun.... read more

The day started off badly. The hotel cleaning crew in Berlin had taken away E..'s survival gear that had been left in a plastic bag beside the garbage bin. A few frantic phone calls to reception followed by some discussions with the supervisor of the cleaning crew ensued. We were told that a new staff member was being trained, and received lots of apologies and the cleaning person remembered taking the bag. He went searching in the hotel basement and voila! found the bag. Whew! Instead of chocolates, they served nuts on the train. None of this no nuts stuff that planes now use to shovel cheap pretzels your way. A quick change of trains at Hamburg and onto Kiel. Our friend G.. and his daughter were at the station to greet us. She had even ... read more

Rained haevy all morning. 111 kms in 6hrs 18mins. Cyceld towards Heide from last nites camp, until I hit the Kiel Kanal- then went east. Wind assisted once heading east. Kanal path not good in places but otherwise a good way as many big ships passing. Interesting.... read more

B som i Bundesrepublik eller Bildåre. I tropisk värme in i Europas herzland.

So far on this trip, the weather had been kind to us ranging from the 'white cloud' scenario to ‘sun lounging' weather whilst we were in Helsinki. We tend not to let the weather spoil the moment and although I concede that there are more pleasant environmental climates than ‘pissing down', it would be nice to get off the ship and explore the capital city of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein known as Kiel. The most famous events in the history of Kiel (apart from the opening of the canal!) OK, the second most famous event in the history of Kiel was the soldiers' mutiny which sparked the German Revolution in late 1918. Just before the end of World War I, the German fleet stationed at Kiel was ordered to be sent out on a last ... read more
