Hello everyone. We have had a really cool week and are now in Leipzig. All has gone well and camping is getting a lot easier as the sun has decided to make an appearance. It was a bit of a wrench last Sunday to leave the luxuries of Fritzlar and the hospitality of our hosts, we were only there a couple of nights but it really recharged us. And aso Gabriele and Rolf did us the service of introducing us to a weird type of mushroom called pfifferlinge which they are all mad about here. It took a couple of days to get to Göttingen, our next stop. It is an old university town but nowadays a fairly modern looking place. Whilst there, a momentous occasion occured. We had looked around the town a bit and ... read more

So I got new batteries for my camera, and all is well. The weather continues to cooperate as I ride out my last week here. 15 July: Love Parade. The first one since 2003. The event had imploded as the techno/rave culture faded around 2001 or so. During its heyday, one million "dancers" would clog the streets of the Tiergarten...I was at the LP only for its first couple of hours, so I didn't see its peak hours. At any rate, it was like the World Cup Fan Mile, but instead of screens every so often, there were about 30 "floats" (a la Mardi Gras) but they threw out beats instead of beads. Even with earplugs, the noise was a bit much. One time I actually felt the sound waves, which was a bit disturbing. Lots ... read more

Hi from World Cup land. We have made it to the soccer-mad city of Leipzig, and are awaiting the big France-Korea game to be played here tomorrow. The French and Korean fans are flooding the city, thank goodness neither are known for their hooliganism. It´s not often you hear "Watch out for those rowdy South Koreans!". Since we last wrote it has become summer here and the World Cup has started. We finished a lovely visit with our friends Cydney and Peter (and Peter´s parents) by watching the exciting first game between Germany and Costa Rica. The next day Cyd and Peter headed back to Boston and we headed on our way to the east. From Bad Godesberg we had planned to head east, since neither of us had been to that part of Germany before. ... read more

Had a look around Fulda, nice little town. Booked tonights accommodation via the web - the right way to do it - a hotel between Halle and Leipzig. Had first real sausage, Bratwurst mit Brot - yum. Got to hotel just before dinner, schitzel for dinner, Champions League was on so bar was pretty lively. Some crap team called Arsenal lost. Do Germans know anything about the harm of smoking? No anti-smoking laws here. And dogs walking around shopping malls? sausage count = 1... read more

Travelling on the high-speed ICE trains that they have in Europe (or perhaps more commonly known in the U.S. as bullet trains) has got to be one of the most fun ways to travel. The trains really do look like long bullets and it is significantly less of a hassle to travel by train too. You buy a ticket, get on and you are set to go. Once these trains get out into the country and on to their specially built tracks, they can really go! I would guess that we were going somewhere around 100mph on average and perhaps even faster at times. You are not going as fast as on an airplane, but are closer to the ground and it feels like you are going faster. That combined with the banked curves and it ... read more

We only got to spend one afternoon in Leipzig (our friends here pronounce it "Laipt-sish"!), but I really liked this city! Everything is close together, so it was easy to walk from the train station to all the things we wanted to see. And just like Berlin, there is a lot of history here, and a lot to learn! There are two famous churches in Leipzig: the Nikolaikirche (which means, "St. Nicholas' Church") and the Thomaskirche ("St. Thomas' Church"). The very important composer Johann Sebastian Bach worked at both of these churches during his career, and his grave is located inside the Thomaskirche! There is a big statue of him in front of the entrance. There is also a small statue of J.S. Bach inside the Nikolaikirche, but th... read more

Today we sandwiched a day trip to Leipzig on our way from Berlin to Dresden. This seemed like a really clever idea until we arrived and realized it was a Montag (Monday) and there was a strong chance that the Gedenkstätte Museum in der „Runden Ecke“, the entire reason I wanted to come to Leipzig in the first place, might be closed for the day. My Lonely Planet guidebook seemed to confirm that it would be. We saw the Nikolaikirche (site of regular freedom demonstrations before the Wall came down) and Tomaskirche (resting place of J.S. Bach) before venturing out to Runde Ecke just in case. Boy, am I glad we did. The door was open, and the big sign outside said "täglich": daily! (Not only that, but my very own printed notes also said "täglich", ... read more
