Our cozy little restaurant in the woods after a nice bike ride.
It's been a few days since I've updated my blog. It had been rainy and dreary here so wasn't so much to update. Just a few highlights from late last week were a bike ride to the little restaurant we discovered in the woods at the beginning of our time here and then dinner at Johannes and Martina's home.

By the time Friday came, Ralf's "Disaster Manager" role was easing up a bit and he made some plans for us to stay at a very special hotel not far from here in the Erzgebirge region. When we arrived Friday afternoon, the sun was shining and the grounds were absolutely gorgeous. Ralf has the patience and persistence to find these amazing spots that make the time here in Germany so special. This hotel is in a chain of about 75 Inn's throughout Germany, Austria, France and Italy where the focus is on relaxation and wellness. Shortly after the hotel was constructed in the mid 1930's, a nearby hospital was bombed so it was taken over to be used as a hospital mainly for women and children and eventually despite being designated as a Red Cross shelter, it was bombed again because

there was a notorious Nazi physician in hiding there. After the war, it was restored to a beautiful, historic Inn. Our room on the second floor had a patio opening up on the rooftop with a gorgeous view of the grounds. Rhodadendran (sp) were in full bloom in the area as captured in some of the photos. Also abundant were peonies and more lilacs....just like springtime in Minnesota!

We enjoyed a nice walk on Friday followed by a few hours in the "Wellness Barn" which was a separate barn like structure on the grounds that contained a sauna, steam room, whirlpool baths, solarium, massage, and multiple relaxing areas. Then a lovely dinner at the quaint onsite restaurant. I ordered the beef carrpaciao for an appetizer and pork medallions with mushroom sauce and spatzele for dinner. Ralf had a traditional dinner of game and rolled dumplings. Saturday we awoke to more sunshine so took advantage of the good weather with a walk around the nearby town of Schlema where we did some souvenir shopping and enjoyed a gorgeous park there with unbelievable views of the rolling hills of Erzgebirge region. We even came across a fenced area with about 25

fawns. They were quite a ways from the fence when we first approached but came running over when Ralf made kissing noises. Even the deer can't resist his charms! They were so curious and we stayed for awhile feeding them leaves through the fence. Just as the rain came back for a late afternoon appearance, we headed back to the Inn for a few more hours of relaxation in the Wellness Barn. Late afternoon, Ines checked into the adjacent room and joined us for another delicious and entertaining dinner. More carpaccio and the seasonal specialities featuring the famous white asparagus of the region, some schnitzel, rouladen and liver rounded out the evening, but the night was topped with amazing desserts, including another seasonal specialty of rhubarb dessert for Ralf. After a late night social hour and wedding planning with Ines, we called it a night. The next morning Ralf arranged for a lovely breakfast for the three of us on our private terrace. By the time we finished it had started raining again so instead of our planned walk in the woods, we spent the day at the Wellness Barn...Yep by this time we are all pretty well and definitely relaxed! All in all a very special weekend as we wind down our time in Germany. While we didn't get to do the traveling we originally planned due to the flooding, this weekend was such a nice break for us to have quality time together in an unbelievably beautiful setting.
