We arrived safely in Germany yesterday greeted by lots of snow! Havent seen much of that this year! We enjoyed it so much that we decided it would be fun to get the car stuck in a snowbank and spend 30 minutes pushing it out. After some teamwork and a borrowed shovel we were able to get out and mad it safely to our destination for the evening, the Folklorehof Inn in Gruena. It iss absolutely gorgeous here...a quaint little tudor style Inn with an outdoor Christmas Market right outside in the courtyard. We had a fantastic dinner at the restuarant last night. For an appetizer we had beef carpaccio (more raw meat...seems to be a trend here!) and for dinner I had cauliflower and roasted potatoes with hollandaise sauce and Ralf enjoyed venison. We topped ... read more

After a traditional breakfast of rolls (brötchen, meats, and cheeses) we ventured out to the Christmas Market in downtown Chemitz. I had been in this same area this summer so it was fun to see it transformed into a winter wonderland with cobblestone streets lined with vendor booths selling everything from Christmas crafts, sausages, winter wear, spiced nuts and gluhwein. There were lights and decorations everywhere and it snowed all day while we shopped and explored. This evening we are attending a birthday party for Martina. More tomorrow...... read more

Ralf and I are about to embark on a trip to discover the magic of Christmas tradition in Germany. He has so many fond memories and stories that he has shared about all of his years living there and I can't wait to experience it myself. We will spend 8 days there, visiting with family and friends, attending the opera in Dresden, and visiting some of the Christmas villages. My first fall and winter in Florida has left me anxious for cooler temps and snow. Yes, friends, that is not a typo! I recognize that those of you who know me well are probably choking on your coffee about right now but honestly, I am ready for a week of sweaters, boots, coats, and yes....even snow! I will try to keep up daily with pictures and ... read more

Greetings from the Bungalow! We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the "Castle Resturaunt" (as I call it) last night. It is an actual castle just down the hill from the bungalow and was the former home of the Duke of Chemnitz. It was an all around relaxing day just updating my blog and resting and then a nice dinner last night. Now we are packing up the bungalow, departing for a three hour drive to Berlin shortly, where we will explore the city a bit and then meet another of Ralf's friends' Swen and his wife for dinner. Tomorrow we fly to Venice!!! For those of you who know me well, this is a big one on the bucket list so I can hardly believe it's almost here. The following day we will drive to Verona ... read more

Hello Travel Blog Peeps! I'm back...both in a technical sense (limited internet access in recent days of travel) and in a physical sense. Let me say more, but first thanks to those that have left comments on my blog. It's so nice to have a friendly note from home, although these days I am not exactly sure where that is! I still think of Minnesota as my home as my family and my dearest friends are there and I spent so many years of my life there, but actually Florida is my physical home and place where I am building an exciting new life for myself, and finally for the last weeks, I have referred to this cute little bungalow as "home" during our visit to Germany. Regardless, thanks for sharing this journey with me via ... read more

It's been a very relaxing day today which has been welcome. Last night we had dinner at a cute little local place within walking distance of the bungalow. Very traditional German menu with cute little biergarten outside. I had a brat, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Ralf had what he called a meatball but it actually looked and tasted like a little meatloaf...very tasty! I thought of you Jamie! Today after our morning run Ralf went to the butcher to pick up ingredients for breakfast. I knew that sounded strange and even stranger when he came home with 4 kinds of meat for breakfast and fresh rolls which are called broten and the main staple for German breakfasts. The most common type is actually similar to a ciabatta roll. Back to the meat...he unwrapped the package and ... read more

Hallo from Germany! We arrived on Sunday after a few airport delays. In Dusseldorf we ended up having 5 hours until our connecting flight due to a delay in Fort Myers so we took a cab into the downtown area along the Rhine river. We enjoyed a boat ride along the Rhine and then a street fair with about 50 food vendors so I got my first taste of all of Germany's traditional foods. Ralf sampled most of them (see pictures) and I found a new favorite Reibekuchen which was a fresh hasbrown patty essentially, served with applesauce on the side. I know - strange but delicious! After our arrival in Berlin, we rented a car and made the two hour drive to Chemitz, although, it ended up to be less than 2 hours due to ... read more

Had the priviledge of attending the wedding of one of my 28 AFS exchange students, that i have been involved with, this Saturday. I shouldn't really say they are students, as you try to make each and every one of them part of your family and if it works they become like one of your own children. So a wedding in Germany. I'm not sure how much of their wedding was traditional and how much was what they wanted to do but this is how it went. The bridal couple arrived together and mingled with the guests prior to the wedding. We had the wedding ceremony at a castle where a female celebrant officiated. In the wedding room only 40 or so guests could be seated so the bridal couple invited a selection of family and ... read more

After 2 hours of driving, we arrived, hungry and sleepy to the Ferry Terminal in Dover, just to hear the most feared sentence by all travelers: "you are not on the list". What??... I did the booking myself, we must be there... A little run through the city to find internet connection and a check of the emails later, we went back to the terminal, a bit embarrassed to admit that I made a mistake and I had booked the route the other way around, so we were supposed to come from France today and leave the Uk in a week's time... oooopppsss!!!! But there's nothing that money can't buy and, after paying 3 times the amount we initially paid, we set sail... That was the most interesting thing that happened to us (or better, me) ... read more

With the (black and) white cliffs of Dover (see panorama) we said goodbye to England once more wondering how many more times we'll say it before we really mean it!!, this time, from the ferry that will take us to France... I was sea-sick as soon as we stepped inside that damned nut shell rolling on the big waves, as big as they could be in a windless day, at least, 20 cmts!!!... I had to sit all the way and I chose the seats next to the toilet... just in case... fortunately, I didn't need them, but, judging from the number of ladies who went in and out of that toilet I think I wasn't the only sea-sick one!!! I'm the kind of person who thinks that traveling is not about the destination, but the ... read more
