Vom Campingplatz aus ... read more

Nor had I until try to find an interesting place to stay between Antwerp and Berlin. This was where I was pointed by respondents on the excellent thorn tree forum run by LP amongst a host of other towns. We then selected it based on what looked like an interesting room on Airbnb............and the web did not lie. We were tired from the Antwerp bus ride so the series of local trains we trundled along in passed in a bit of a blur as we nodded in and out of sleep. Waking just before the Quedlinburg stop I first observed tell tale signs of post industrial decay - we must be in the old 'East'. What were we coming to? Would it be a few points of view and then Soviet style apartments? I need not ... read more

It's Saturday morning at 8 am and I couldn't be happier! I was off to Dessau, Germany to see the great Bauhaus. The Bauhaus is the school that really took a huge step in art and architecture. It helped form the fundamentals and ideas of Graphic Design of the 20th century. As a Graphic Design Major, I had to take a semester course dedicated to Graphic Design and a large part of it focused on this school and the artist from it. It was such a dream come true to just stand next to the building. I can not even imagine what my face looked like when I learned I could go inside and walk around. When we first drove past the building, I became overwhelmed with more excitement while staring out the window repeating, "That's ... read more

Competition day 2 - started the morning with our folk song set, which went extremely well. We then changed quickly, and wandered out into the plaza by the conference centre to do a bit of rehearsing of El Hambo on the off chance that we were going be in the Grand Prix competition. As we were rehearsing on the stairs, a small group of Chinese children came over, curious, and EM showed them the score and had them follow along. They loved it. At one point we asked them to sing... But the problem was that they didn't speak English, so they had to run for a translator. Once they did, though, and our request was passed on, they sang for us, and it was lovely. In return we sang "Tell My Ma" and then the ... read more

20:13 Not a lot to say today. It was our first day of competition, so we spent two hours rehearsing in the morning, then headed into the centre of town for our first class - sacred music. The class was in the church of Saint Sylvester, which is from the 1600s, and has an absolutely lovely acoustic. We sang three pieces - Laus Trium Puerorum, Laudi alla Vergine Maria, and the MacIntyre Ave Maria. Heather was pleased with our performance, so I think we might have a fighting chance there. Our class this evening was in the conference centre (which, surprisingly, also has a decent acoustic. Obviously not as beautifully echo-y as the church, but still able to hear everyone and such), and it was the... Whatever... Class. Not sure what the binding theme was, but ... read more

11h00 Crashed hard last night, but got 8 hours uninterrupted sleep, which was lovely. I still don't feel entirely with it, but am currently thinking that might have more to do with lack of caffeine than with sleep deprivation for the first time so far this trip, so yay! So, yes, the hotel is set at the base of a bunch of ski jumps, and apparently used to be the home base for the local ski club. As a result, our after-breakfast rehearsal was held outdoors in the spectator stands, our voices echoing lovely-ly through the hills. BR joked that we should start singing "The Hills Are Alive". Wrong country, but, you know. To Be Sung On The Water is still freaking us out - not because it's the hardest piece, but just because we haven't ... read more

Halle is a city of around 230,000 near the Saale river. The university has part of its campus right in the middle of the city so there is lots of activity and young people around. The church in the middle of the city, Marktkirche, has a very famous association with Martin Luther the founder of the Lutheran church. He died in Halle so a death mask was made of his face and hands and is on display in the church in a side room. Each church has a magnificent pipe organ and yesterday we were able to listen to the organist practising for a while. Halle was part of the GDR and has many apartment blocks which were once intended for families but now are full of students and low income earners. An orphanage was set ... read more

Today we travelled to this town which was where Martin Luther was a priest and set out the reforms that created the Lutheran church. The town is set out with museums, shops, cafes, churches and various places that were actual places in Martin Luther's time. Martin Luther was a priest in the Catholic church and was concerned with the excesses and corruption within the church. He preached here and focussed on the 10 commandments as a creed for living. When he saw that this was not being followed he delivered 95 theses to the church and posted this on the church door for all to see. This set out the schism which divided the catholic church and created the Lutheran church. He married in his later life and had children and created many other reforms that ... read more

My last day in Istanbul was spent on firstly on leisurely cruise on the Bosphorous sea. This important water way connects the Marmar Sea and the Black Sea and is open to all ships. Massive palatial homes are built right on the waters edge complete with pools and pavilions and will cost millions of Turkish Lire. People enjoy fishing and some brave souls were swimming, with one area having a beach. After visting a botanical garden right in the inner city we took a minibus to The Sapphire which is tallest tower in Europe, slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower and some big tower in Frankfurt. Magnificent views of the whole of Itstanbul and the seas. Istanbul to Turkey is 2 1/2 hours by plane, Lufthansa is a great choice to fly this route and cost ... read more
