We left Bühl early after a very quite breakfast in the convent. We set the satnav with the hope of journeying through the Black Forest en route to Füssen. Perhaps it was our age, the desire to get going or the wish to get to our destination in plenty of time to enjoy the sights - but we failed to realise why it was predicting and arrival time is 3:15pm - given that it was only just 8am that meant a drive of over 7 hours! Still we set off assuming some accident or roadworks might explain the journey time. We drive through lots of small towns and farmer’s fields but saw little in the way of forest. It was after about 40 minutes of this ‘steady’ progress that Amy asked if the satnav setting were ... read more

We went via Nagold at the edge of Swarzwald to Neunkirchen for Family visits. We stayed a few day in Nagold to prpare ourselves for the up coming days where we will have to talk German. Okay for Liz but I fall back to English all the time much easier for me although I can understand it very well. There is not much in Nagold, it is certainly not a tourist town but around the city is Schwarzwald and that is beautiful. But we had a bit of rain there and than Schwarzwald is not a good time to visit. So we rearranged suitcases. Cleaned up inside the car and washed clothes. Just 200 kilometers to go to Neunkirchen plenty of time. The last day in Nagold we enjoyed a good breakfast, took the luggage into ... read more

Dear friends, the time has finally come. After days of preparation selling our cars, our furniture, our decor, our books, and everything that isn't essential, we leave Bielefeld and start the trip of our lives, a round-the-world journey for the next 12 months. Our first destination is still in Europe. We join Elisa's family in east France as they take part in one of the world's biggest hot-air-balloon meetings. For that we take a bus to Saarbrücken, the closest German city to the border. There we meet Tony, our Couchsurfing Host for the night. Tony's house is a really cool students flat. We meet all the people crowding the kitchen, speaking up to 4 different languages and finally go out all together to the street festival in the old quarter of the city. The next morning, ... read more

Welcome to Saarbrücken ! Saarbrücken tells the story of two Cities, Alt Sarrbrücken and St Johann reunited in 1900 to create a metropolis with human dimensions, resolutely modern but also proud of its heritage showing in the picturesque little Streets and squares of the historic district, making it a vibrant and cosmopolitan City with many visitors coming from the neighbouring countries. Here, in the 3 Borders Country one goes out to enjoy a drink or a dinner with friends in Germany or Luxembourg, very naturally as France, Luxembourg or Germany are well within a 30 to 45 minutes reach by car or by train. Many people from the Lorraine region are regularly shopping in Germany and admit that many casual everyday items are better value for money accross the border. Just like many people who live ... read more

July 8th: Well that was an interesting night; on a top bunk with no safety-rail (and I'm a night roller) no mishaps though. But still an interesting night because I awoke to the sound of a guy rummaging around with some baggage (the rooms here don't lock) I saw that the cupboard where I'd stashed my little backpack containing all my meagre valuables was open! I leaned over the edge of the bed and saw the guy fossicking through what appeared to be the document wallet that Claire and Geoff had given me for my trip! So I yelled "Hey!" the guy looked up and politely said "oh excuse me" and took it around the corner to fossick some more. I got down and checked the cupboard... all my stuff was there... in the light of ... read more

Germany is a truly beautiful country. A place which not truly appreciated by most Brits. My trip to the beautiful Saarland was courtesy of my Ex German girfriend. A beautiful girl with long curly brown hair, who shared the same passion as myself - travel. All in all, I have visited this area three times. I entered via Frankfurt Hahn, a lovely little airport and I must say is set in the most amazing forests... I tell you there are more trees in this area, then in all of Britain. Trier, firstly is an amazing little city. Home of course to the legendary Karl Marx, it however, has an amazing Roman ruin, which just to sit in front of it, is to feel the awe inspiring length of time in which it has been standing; set ... read more

Well Well!!! Thats a week gone by already, That was very quick indeed. I am writing this sitting at a table in the sun. I decided that I had had enough of motorways and busy roads (which will explain my lack of mileage today). I firstly stopped in Luxembourg city, it is quite beautiful and I didnt even manage to find my way to the old city - another time without a doubt. I took a chance and headed out of the city in what I thought was the right direction - that paid off again. I drove through some lovely villages before stopping in Remich for a spot of lunch. Thats when I bothered to get the map out!! woohooooo!!!! and i went and spent money on a compass too - hmmmm built in one ... read more

The problem with family visits is that everywhere there is cake and other food to eat and no way you can say no. That is just not there. That was the same with sleeping. Sonja & Jorg gave their waterbed to us and were sleeping themselves on an airbed. We told them that was not on, so we slept on the airbad. That was just as bad for whoever was first in bed when the other arrived you were lifted half a metre up in the air. Nevertheless we did sleep very well. The next day it was visits to family in Kirkel. You will not get away without seeing them. Same story of food and cake. We think we have increased our weight by 5 kilos since we hit Germany. The people here cannot do ... read more
