Today we went to Trier, the oldest town in Germany, and then we were just a Couple of miles from Luxembourg, so we had to go even though you do not score passport stamps and Then we went to Aachen which had a marvelous old chUrch and Then we were just a little ways from Belgium so we went there too so today we scored two new countries and we found a mcd and I had chicken.
Connie here. Things I learned today: even though Sue and Dave already told me this, I saw it in action today. If you are ordering one of something, hold out your thumb like you are hitch hiking. If you want two, hold up your pointer finger. Pointer finger up in the US means one, here it means two. Sue and Dave have mistakenly ordered two large pizzas this way in the past. When Sue was ordering at the bakery, she kept her hands behind her. Next up is Dave.
First off we are still married. Between jimmie's driving instructions and our confused Garmin it lead to many hours in the car. I'm not sure how we managed go
through three counties on the way back to our house but yes in fact we traveled through Luxembourg and Belgium arriving back to our house in Germany. I am now enjoying a beer!
Emily you're up!
Seems like this is the last trip the Garmin will ever make, and none if us are particularly sad. She gets confused with the construction, then spouts out random directions. We went on a guided tour today, this time in English, and our guide was very good. We had lunch after that, and when we asked the waiter for an extra pair of silverware, he looked confused. After we changed our terms to "fork and knife" he understood and brought us the silverware. When he came to our table, he asked aunt Jimmie what word she used to say "fork and knife". Then we all practiced saying "silverware" over and over again until he got the pronunciation down. That was pretty much the excitement of the day!
We had a great tour guide in Trier and saw most of the really important things to see. Despite the earlier comments about the Garmin, we found the
information center easily and had no issues parking. The Romans must have refined their style here ... Because some of the Roman buildings are really not very pretty ... Impressive but not pretty. We did eat ice cream at an eis cafe today ... So Emily got her ice cream fix for today. I am surprised that no one else mentioned the weather was really quite nice today - not as hot as the other days. The trip to Aachen was a quick one as we were running out of time and Garmin was experiencing some navigation challenges ... But we did see the massive cathedral and lots of the old city as we circled. Home all safe and sound tonight. Looking forward to visiting Remagen tomorrow.
And by the way ... There was an Iowa State fan wearing a beat Iowa shirt here today. Honestly, they need to get a Better hobby.

Here we sit, at the top of Virginia, under a tornado warning -- i.e., not watch -- down in our basement ... and we have to read about the fun you are having in Germany and such other places as your Garmin took you. Seriously (tho that was), we enjoy reading about your travel adventures. Keep writing. Bill & Kathi
