Woke up the next morning feeling a little worse for wear but made myself get out of bed and made my way to the train station. I got on a train to Cologne which is a two hour journey north. The trains in Germany are brilliant, they are really efficient and always run on time. For the most part of the trip the train travelled alongside the Rhine river which is really beautiful and well worth it. We passed several small towns each with their own church and nestled into the valley. They all looked exactly the same and as we rounded each bend sure enough another town, another church! We passed maybe fifteen of these small towns and occasionally seeing the remains of castles perched atop the hill. The river is pretty busy with many ... read more

The rain cleared not long after we began our canal cruise of Amsterdam this morning. The tour guide said there must be lots of angels on the bus because it rains in Amsterdam two hundred days of the year and this was only the second sunny day she’d ever experienced in this city. We believe we have been blessed with wonderful weather every day so far. It is so rare to have sunshine and blue skies at this time of year in Europe. We admired the narrow, leaning town houses of the “Venice of the North” and were amazed by the number of bicycles. Most people travel by bike instead of car because parking space is extremely limited and expensive, and the city is very flat. In Amsterdam, cyclists have right of way ahead of all ... read more

Erin here again First just have to say WOOHOOOOO!!!!!!! I passed 5th year!!!!!!!!!! And now about Cologne, or Köln as it really is. Dan? What would you say about Köln? He says "Just type we only have a few minutes before we have to catch the train to Amsterdam", which is a fair call. We only had one night in Köln, but it has been amazing. The first thing that hits you when you get off the train is the MASSIVE Cathedral, the Köln Dom. It´s certainly the biggest in Germany, possibly in Europe, possibly in the World or like the Universe or something. Certainly bigger than the one in Pt Pirie. Click here for the Köln Dom Today we climbed the spire which was like 5 bajillion steps or something. It was awesome but ... read more

Cologne was the original (and main) destination of this trip, the reason we went on it in the first place - even if, with all the intermediate stops and side trips, we ended up spending less time in Cologne itself than we would have liked. On this third day of our mini Christmas market tour, we (very grudgingly) departed Amsterdam around 1:00 PM and arrived in Cologne almost 7 hours later, with a 2-hour stopover in Brussels, which we took advantage of to finally visit the Marché de Noël. The plan was that we'd leave our bags in the left luggage lockers at Brussels Midi, then we'd take the tram to Place Sainte Catherine, where the market took place. Brussels being as compact as it is, we figured we had enough time to travel there and ... read more

When we first thought of holidaying in Cologne, we were thinking of a 2 hour flight either way and a good two days in the city. Then we chanced upon a really great deal from Deutsche Bahn (www.bahn.co.uk) . £69 per person return from London - of course there was a catch - the travel was by train. Did we really want to do it? It would mean 6 hours of travel time either way, which would give us barely a day and a half in the city. However, if you really look at it, Europe does travel by train and, Cologne is a small city and it was worth a try. Now here is how the deal worked. The Eurostar from London Waterloo to Brussels Midi and ICE from Brussels Midi to Cologne. On the ... read more

I stayed for four nights in Cologne, within walking distance of the huge cathedral. The two towers of the cathedral are 157 m high - it was the highest building in the world for four years in the 1880s. You can go to the top by climbing a seemingly neverending narrow spiral staircase. You really do get a sense of the height of the building this way, rather than by elevator. The views from the top were pretty good. The outside of the cathedral is very detailed and intricate and the inside was different than other big churches I've been in. It feels ancient (which makes sense since construction on the thing started in 1248). It supposedly holds the earthly remains of the three magi in an impressive looking gold box. Cologne has lots of old ... read more

Our last “day” of traveling was pretty interesting. We took a train from Amsterdam to Cologne to Bonn, and from there took a local commuter train to the area where the Birkenstock factory is located. We had to keep asking directions from locals to find the place as it was about a 30 minute walk from the train station and no signs really pointing the way except the one right by the factory. There’s an outlet store near the factory that Wilson had been to last time he traveled in that area, and he tempted us to go with promises of rows and rows of Birkenstocks like the scene from the Matrix with Birkenstocks instead of guns. While it wasn’t quite like the Matrix movie (apparently they’ve changed the store since he was there last) they ... read more

One last trip was in order before departure, so I packed a few things and train-trekked over to Köln (Cologne). Yeah, yeah, I know I was there right after I arrived, but I still hadn’t seen the Haasterts, so Cologne gets the distinct honor of appearing in my travelblog twice! I know the Haasterts because the youngest of their 3 kids, Neta, decided to be an exchange student to the states ‘way, way back’ in 1998, and ended up in my family (actually living in my bedroom) for 10 months, during the same time that I was on my exchange year to Switzerland. I met Tom Haastert (kid number 2) in the train on Friday, and together we stashed our stuff in the train station luggage lockers and took off for a couple hours of hanging ... read more
