'allo! (I've decided thats how Europeans pronounce it).
So we are here in Cologne, and Erin and Stephen made it yesterday (no, they didn't get put into the 2 beds in my room, but they are just downstairs). Yesterday morning I went to the cathedral. Words cannot describe how amazing it is, so I don't even think I'll try. Its huge...to say the least! I didn't end up taking a tour because they had pamphlets that did a good job explaining (plus I took a year of art history over 2 years ago...that should be enough, right???). I took so many pictures, its kind of ridiculous. I'll try to hold back the desire to post them all, but seriously, if you ever get the chance to come to Cologne, do it! The Cathedral itself is so worth it, plus, the rest of the city is pretty awesome too. Its big enough that you won't run out of things to do, but not so huge that its overwhelming. The hostel we are staying at is very nice (and convenient!) and I finally found my apple...yay!
As we were walking back from the laundry mat, the was the crowd of people
View of the Cathedral
This is just after entering...notice how tiny the person looks! gathering around a car, and we stopped to watch. It was a weird sort of live interpretive performance involving a handful of tall people with long hair. The car thing was a women doing weird poses on top of the car with a loud speaker that was blaring "You say you love me but you want freedom. Why is freedom more important than love?" Further down the street there was an area with tubs of hair and people in the tubs of hair. Across the street from that was a bunch of paper lanterns, and more people doing strange things with hair. It was very interesting, to say the least! Erin had a good idea that maybe they were making some sort of reference to Tibet, and what was happening there...though it could have just been a thought provoking interpretive live-action play intended to make you think. Either way, it was random and yet interesting.
Yesterday the 3 of us walked around Cologne some more (I took lots more pictures!) and explored the other side of the Rhine. We went across on this really cute cable car that gave an amazing view of the whole city. We wandered a
Live Action Performance
This was the start of the performance. This woman crawled out of the car through the sun roof, then this guy crouching next to the car jumped on the hood and handed her the megaphone. It was weird, but interesting. bit, and saw some more of the important Cologne sites (they have a pretty dank park here). Stephen spent some quality alone time in the Dom (Erin and I had gone to the 9 am German service, so we had already been there for the day).
For dinner we decided to celebrate by having a real sit down meal (we haven't really done that the last couple of days) so we went to this beer garden down the street from our hostel. The food was delicious...I had a very German mean of an egg on top of pork with fried potatoes and a beer. It was surprisingly affordable too. We then had dessert at McDonalds (really, you can't beat a dollar--or euro--sundae, no matter what country you're in!) and we're going to have Starbucks for breakfast. Erin and I decided we needed a little more American-ish stuff before we went on to Africa. While I will probably be able to locate a plethora of Starbucks when I get to Cairo, she has less of a chance in Nairobi.
We just finished taking Stephen to the train station (he had all his luggage) where he left for a few
Erin and Stephen
While wandering around Cologne... days in Vienna before finally going on to his program. Do you know that he packed a comforter? Like a full or queen sized, puffy comforter! Man, if I had enough room for a comforter in my luggage!...actually, I probably would have downsized my suitcase if I had enough room for a comforter. Seriously though, who brings a comforter for their semester abroad in Europe?? (Okay Stephen, I'll stop ragging on you now...😊).
I leave for Cairo tonight (at 1035 to be exact, from Frankfurt airport) and I can't believe that my Europe adventure is already over! Its been amazing! I have so many random stories that I could just keep writing and writing to my heart's content, so if you want to hear anything else, let me know (maybe you'll get lucky and I'll send you a letter or postcard 😊). I am not sure where I'll be in Cairo when I get there (they just changed my housing assignment yet again) or when I'll have access to the internet next, but I promise to post again as soon as I can! I hope all you kids who are still in transit make it to your destination safely
Carving
This is of the dead Christ and his followers (Mary, apostles, ect). It is in one of the atriums of the Cathedral. (Jan and Andrew, you worried us there for a bit!) and if you are about to move-in to dorms back in the states, good luck!
Much love from abroad, and then next time you hear from me I'll be on a new continent!
