My Hosts Family
Fun Sunday breakfast in the backyard of Kerstins Sisters house! So I figured I'd take a few minutes to give you an idea of what a day in the life of Paige Brown is now. :-)
I wake up usually around 7:15, get ready for school and look outside to see what the weather looks like. It was really hot for a few days and then the last few days have been super rainy and cold, so my clothing varies a lot between the week.
I try to leave my house around 8 am so that I can make either the 8:07 or the 8:17 S-Bahn (schnell stadtbahn) into town. I live in a small suburb outside of Köln called Lövenich. I have about a 10 min walk to the train station which really is kind of nice on the pretty days. Not so much when its pouring down rain.
I have about an 8 min train ride on the S-Bahn from the Lövenich stop to Köln Hansaring which is where the language school is. Carl Duisburg Centrum is the language school where I am currently studying. Im in a pretty low level right now because my grammer is horrible. But I can speak really well so im
New Shoes
Because I walked to much and got blisters because I wore down my other shoes to the sole. I threw them in the trash. hoping to move up in a few weeks when I remember how to write everything correctly.
My class is very diverse. We have students from Russia, Kenya, South Africa, the US, Taiwan, Japan, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Armenia, India, Afghanistan, etc....the list goes on. It is interesting to hear how the different students accents affect their German pronunciations. We have it easy in English.
So usually I head into the city in the afternoon when class lets out at 1 pm. There are a lot of great shopping streets and the Dom is beautiful to sit and stare at. I enjoy sometimes just going inside and sitting and thinking about how amazing this building is.
Then when I feel that it is time, I will take the S-Bahn back to my little suburb of Lövenich. My host, Kerstin, is in her mid 40s and is a Childrens therapist. She is really nice and I have enjoyed sitting with her and talking most of the nights when we are both home. She helps me with my German and it is good for me to practice at night.
Most of Kerstins family lives pretty close to her here in Köln.
Lövenich
Part of my walk to the train every day We had a huge backyard breakfast last Sunday and it was fabulous. Ive never seen so much food in my life. I enjoyed talking with everyone, especially her niece and nephew who are 3 and 9. The nephew just started taking English last year and was really excited to show me his work.
Well Im off to go on a Kneipe Kölsch Tour (Pub Crawl for the local Kölsch beer) and then in the morning I am leaving to go down the Rhein River to Bacharach to drink wine at the local vinyards and stay at a youth hostel in an old castle. I will update you all soon on this glorious weekend adventure.
