I bet that title alone has drawn the attention of my male readers. You should, of course, all be ashamed of yourselves, since I am not in the business of using cheap tricks to attact attention to my blog. I did, however, meet a girl today who reminded me of the importance of seizing every opportunity as soon as it comes along. Her name was Maria. Oh how easily this could turn into a poetic description of a momentous encounter of two lost souls in a foreign land...In reality it was just an advert for a language exchange, which I saw and decided to act upon. A Spanish - English exchange, no less! A slightly unusual opportunity in the middle of Germany, but didn't they keep telling us to think outside the box? I didn't think, ... read more

“A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.” Lao Tzu According to this ancient Eastern wisdom, I must have been a pretty good traveller today. I decided that the best way to get a feel for the city is to let the city take me where it wants me to go. Walking around Bonn with no intention whatsoever in early November is a very colourful experiences - just about all the leaves have fallen off the trees by now, and the ground is covered with thick foliage. I spent at least two hours rustling through the leaves with my boots, letting random choice and traffic lights determine my route. You may think that basing my walking destination on traffic light colour is a little silly, but trust me, in Germany there ... read more

Your mind is in a restless state which only travel will satisfy Even a fortune cookie can read my mind! I must say seeing this written on a tiny piece of paper crumpled inside the crispy dough really hit the nail on the head - this short sentence describes exactly how I feel. Or should I say felt? My travel started 36 hours ago with one of the shortest journeys possible. It takes a mere 55 minutes to fly from Gatwick to Bonn/Cologne! Yet even such a short flight was enough (for now) to satisfy my burning, overwhelming desire to look at the world from above in anticipation. I rarely fly in the day; flying, like many other things in life, is best enjoyed either in the early hours of the morning, when the sun is ... read more

I am currently on my way back home from Bonn, where I spent a weekend with my friends Simone, Katrin, Anke, and Tom. On Friday, I was invited to my former employer’s summer party in Bonn. The party started off in the afternoon in the garden of the villa the company is based in. Some of my former colleagues still work with that company, but my friend Simone, for example, started working with a company that is based not far from Frankfurt, so she came all the way from there to attend the party. It was good to see my friends and former colleagues, and of course there were a lot of stories to tell. There was a great buffet, and a saxophone quartet played for us. Very nice. Some of us ended up in the ... read more

Thursday, June 3rd: Today, we got up a little later, and had a leisurely breakfast and walked Falco. We were going to go pick up my Mom’s cousin, Margit. Margit was the whole reason for our trip in the first place. She had turned 70 on May 1st, and we were going to have a big family reunion to celebrate. She lived approximately 2 hours away, in the hillsides of Bergkrahlingen (near Bonn). She lives by herself on a large plot of land in a cute little cottage. This was the day that we got up to 200 km per hour on the autobahn!!! That is 124 miles per hour! Whew!! I was holding on with white knuckles!  It’s amazing to me that a car can go that fast with 5 people and 1 dog ... read more

We were a little annoyed that two of the ticketing machines at Bruhl station did not work properly, they didn't give us the change, and there was nobody around the station for Sunday. Despite the fact that we would need some patience at the ticketing office at Cologne station, we joined a queue to obtain 2 return tickets to Bonn on 11 June. We went to the same platform as the previous day. The punctual Rhine Express (RE) arrived at Cologne Central station on time. We got on the upper floor seats of the double decker train so as to see the views from the window. The Rhine Express took us to Bonn in 30 minutes. The former capital appeared a very friendly and relaxed town. There were numerous charming shops, boutiques, and cafes in the ... read more

20th May ‘09: ("Bonn: A small town in Germany (John Le Carre) Peter and I are discussing Cambodia this morning - how we love the Mekong, and the magnificence of the Angkor complex there. But my stomach is rumbling, and I suggest breakfast. Still clutching a Nikon camera and my email address, he agrees…but hardly leaps into action. Peter is unstoppably mid-rant and bearing the expression of a man cheesed to the back teeth with language; he is cocking a snook at the word “ongoing”, regarding it as an Americanism. ‘Why can't people say “continuing”, as they should?’ he asks loftily. Do let me know if I become as pedantic as this, won’t you? Steering him into the kitchen ought to get breakfast off the ground, I think naively, but the unadulterated jabber continues; he ... read more

19th May 09: Enough is enough. I'd hate to make a habit out of ridiculing Namibian, but he suggests - entreats, even - that I recount another one of his navigational glitches on my blog. You see, we’re going through another little phase of letting him lead us into cities. Ooh, that’s an absurd notion, I hear you cry, inevitably leading to disaster. Yes, well you may well have a point. He overtakes me on the A1 in Germany, just before our exit this morning - so far, so good. Then he confidently turns right down a cul-de-sac and has to reverse out, under my benevolent, if despairing, gaze. ‘I'm useless at this aren't I?’ he asks meekly. It’s a rhetorical question. There was the odd expletive thrown in, too. Lovable teddy bears, however, who ... read more

Today started day 1 of our time in Germany, it also was the first day in over two weeks we got to sleep later than 7am. We woke up at 10am today and yes it was fabulous besides that fact that Gail was sick with the flu. Thank you Aaron for blinds that shut out the sun and for the medicines that made me better!  We were completely spoilt and went downstairs and had breakfast, the yummiest rolls with ham, cheese, cucumber and tomato... best breakfast we have had in about a week. So thanks for that to Aaron. After breakfast was done we chatted a little and messed about on the internet booking hostels and things for the rest of the trip to come. It was great to have the internet on call boy ... read more
