Aachen The most beautiful cathedral in the world So for most people, myself included, Aachen is not a town on their list of must see destinations. Most will not even have heard of it. I'm going to do my best now, to persuade you just to take a morning stop off there. You don't need much longer, but, honestly you won't regret it. Aachen is an understated city found on the boarder of Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Its geographical importance made it the centre of Charlemagne's empire. The surviving architecture from Charlemagne's reign is just beautiful; the ruby in the crown has to be the quite exquisite blue and gold Dom. Charlemagne was the king of the Francs, born in 747 he became ruler in 768 at the death of his father. For the young ... read more

Hello All! We arrived in Aachen, Germany last night (Sunday) around 8:00 pm to our Youth Hostel. A bit of a downgrade from our nice hotels we have had so far. Five girls to one room who have to share one toilet and one shower, it just reminded us of dorm life. :) We explored downtown a little last night and got a walking tour of the city this monring along with a tour of the cathedral in the center of town. It was beautiful! There is so much history here it is breathtaking. The pictrues just don't do it justice, but I still took as many as possible!! On our last night (Friday) in the Netherlands we all decided to go see the Hangover II, how American of us :). Then we enjoyed our last ... read more

Christmas begins about the first of December with an office party and ends when you finally realize what you spent, around April fifteenth of the next year. P.J. O'Rourke, Modern Manners Well in Germany Christmas begins as early as mid-November with the building of Christmas markets! The first signs of them were already popping up here and there over the weekend. My brother and I spent Saturday on an improvised tour around Cologne, from the first to the last of its three remaining city gates. I chose to leave England in November for a reason - to get away from the dreary greyness of English winter, but on that Saturday afternoon the North of Germany was no better. It was chucking it down with rain and my boots were soaked through, an unfortunate circumstance considering I ... read more

Aachen was the city to explore on today’s schedule, with the cathedral as the target and getting a haircut also on the to-do list. I have no pictures of the haircut, but lots of cathedral pictures! First was the haircut. My professor recommended the place, and since I needed a haircut, I went to go check it out. While my hair is rather shorter than I am used to now, it is certainly neater than it was before, and already feels better with less hair in the heat today. Next was getting the cathedral, which was amazingly simple and fast. The cathedral was amazing, but the experience of visiting it was kind of disappointing, as you will shortly figure out. The site itself is a World Heritage site, which gives you some idea of its importance, ... read more

Strom ist doch immer gleich. Zumindest gleich teuer.

It was rainy & cold today, but Dad & I braved the weather & headed toward Aachen, Germany, which is about an hour & 10 minutes by bus from Maastricht. I figured that since I hadn’t been to Germany in my entire stay in the Netherlands, I should definitely check it out while I still had the opportunity. I had only been to Germany once (Hamburg), but I wasn’t totally impressed so I was hoping that this experience would change my mind. I’m still unsure how I feel about Germany, to be honest. I think it’s because the language is so intimidating. Even when being friendly & nice, it still sounds so harsh & cold. Aachen also didn’t have a lot of English speakers & my German is next to nonexistent. I think in total, I ... read more

Who knew when we left that we would manage so much travelling. The exhaustion is starting to set in but we managed to leave England, travel through northern France, explore Belgium (Bruges and Gent), travel briefly through the Netherlands and arrive in Deutschland (Aachen). We left England in the early hours. After managing to drive late on Friday night (arrived around 11:30pm) to a remote campsite in the Kent countryside we were woken but the dulcet sounds of a gate crashing open. Quickly scrambling to get ready to leave before the owners realised we'd high-jacked their campsite car park, we left a few measly pounds hoping they'd quickly lose the CCTV footage of our number plate. Kent looks nice at 6am... Eurotunnel is an interesting place... We thought we were early. Actually, our ticket said we ... read more

We stopped off in Aachen on our drive from the Netherlands to Alsace, on the suggestion of Beatrice. It was definitely worth the stop. We had intended to drive direct from Deurne to close by Colmar, but once we realised how worthwhile the stop over in Aaachen was we decided not to rush so much. The history of the place goes back a long way, the Romans knew about the hot springs in the area and had them chaneled into baths. Back in 768, Charlemagne (Charles the Great) came to visit, and he spent a lot of time in the city and was responsible for a lot of the building activity in the city. Aachen was also the place where most of the medieval Kings of Germany were crowned. Much later in history, the Reuters news ... read more
